@fairuz,

But then again it is Facebooks responsibility to protect their users and thus to make sure that anyone who has your data, that they can handle it in a secure way. Which to me doesn't seem to be the case here.

I also disagree about the email and phone numbers not being sensitive information, because for us here, they sure are.

They can't do anything about it. These people gave their email addresses and phone numbers to some other company independently.

You have no privacy if interacting with companies such as Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc.

Apple is better at protecting ones privacy, for how long is yet to be seen.

Glad my use of social media is limited, my life is bliss. I don’t need to know what you ate at every meal, dress, etc. If I am interested I will call, text or hang out. People are addicted to this nonsense.
If you think this is what people use social media for, you're thinking of 2008, not now. But it's still about as bad as you say it is, only FB's groups are useful.

Am I the only one who thinks the term “Instagram Influencer” is more of a crime?
It's fine. If people realize what you're doing, they can dump you. If they don't, I don't see the harm. I'd never go into IG influencing, but I don't judge people who do, just think it's a waste of talent.

Facebook's criminal, flagrant disregard for their user privacy strikes again.

Actually you should have changed the start of your sentence to 'Facebook's Partners/Advertisers criminal....' because if you look at all the data privacy security leaks relating to Facebook, they have all come from companies working in partnership with Facebook.

It is the same with Google, Amazon, Microsoft and many others, data privacy leaks have been the result of a 3rd party company '(Partner) who have been given access to their companies databases. Once a database is given to these 'Partners', Facebook, Google, Amazon lose control of what happens to that database. The main companies all appear to have robust security practices in place, the problem is the 'Partners' they work with do not, and that is the big issue that needs to be addressed.

No, Facebook themselves have had plenty. The privilege escalation for viewing private info and messages, for one.

Also, see above. This breach is absolutely not FB's fault and doesn't involve them.

They should be known as a micro-ad-agency. Influencers are an extension of real-life Ponzi schemes. It's how Facebook serves 100s of ads because you can't get rid of FB/Insta, just in case Uncle Owen or Aunt Beru send you a photo.

...of how their BBQ went wrong......

I think you should move to three-factor authentication, two not enough clearly.
This has nothing to do with authentication and accounts access. These dumbaz just leaked registration data used to create these accounts. Obviously, criminal negligence in most countries, especially in Europe. Once individual countries start shuting down the acess to Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp for misstreating users data, then, things may start to change. Until then, better use fake names, secondary email address and prepaid numbers when you register in any website that does not require ID autentication such as financial services and trading.

Facebook needs to be shut down, along with any other companies Facebook has their hand in....Instagram...WhatsApp...and whatever else. This needs to stop already....

The problem with this is that there are millions who don’t see anything wrong with subscribing to these apps sadly. I stand you with you on this same notion whole heartedly.

Nope. I just shows how fare out of touch you are with social media

I didn't say I didn't know what one was, more the point that there must be a lot of numb-brained people around to be "influenced" by instagram.

I remember back in the day when Jacko advertised Pepsi .... there were people who were "I MUST drink Pepsi, Jacko drinks it", and others "Jacko only drinks Pepsi coz they pay him a shedload of cash, he'd drink his own p*ss if they paid enough"

Thankfully, I'm the latter.

As a developer, I couldn't imagine any company having a database without a password so suspect this is not an Instagram database. Yes the information may have come from Instagram but not the database.

I hope you know there's zero chance this could ever happen, even less now that Instagram is surpassing Facebook by active users (nonetheless they're still owned by Zack).

The good thing is, nobody, literally nobody is forced to use these websites.

Influencers is just another word for advertisers who are trying to make it sound hip and cool. Like sanitary engineer or maintainer (aka Janitor).
Yes influencers and ad-reads are an attempt to rebrand native advertising/guerrilla marketing/product placement into the hip new thing that all the big content creators need to do. A decade ago native advertising like when a site would change it’s theme to promote a breakfast sandwich would be ridiculed and having sponsored articles would cause an uproar now we have people gleefully accepting endless ad-reads and various other means of sponsored content.
You can look into the things being said about this by marketers if you’re in the mood to be depressed.

An influencer by their definition is someone with a large built-in audience that can be paid to influence said audience hence the term, the term becoming so widely used in the mainstream and taken to be just another word for and supplanting things like “thought leader” and “internet celebrity” is part of their marketing strategy.

Man, FB can't get their act together. Amazing the level of incompetence. Like they say, The fish rot from the head down.
And they’ll just get a pass, again, and people will forget about it by next week.

It’s amazing the things Zuck and friends can get away with nowadays.

If privacy is caring about Google collecting my web searches, I don't care about privacy. I'd rather not have to pay the apple tax for that small unimportant privacy everyone is worried about.
Honestly I never get over how blind people are to the importance of protecting privacy. Just becasue you don't care doesn't mean others don't. I also am concerned, why waste your time posting continually negative posts about a company you hate? Why stick around here? Honestly this is a very minor mystery to me. Not as bad as the guy who wanted to chip his kids but perplexing.

Well Google would collect your web searches on iOS as well.
Let's not forget that Google is the default search engine on iOS and it's consider by Tim himself: the best search engine for iOS users.
When did he say that? Anyway, you can switch very easily to DDG or others.

A database that contained contact information for millions of Instagram influencers, celebrities, and brand accounts was recently leaked online, reports TechCrunch.

The database, which was hosted by Amazon Web Services and contains more than 49 million records, was accessible without a password or other credentials according to the security researcher who informed TechCrunch about the leak.

Records include public data pulled from Instagram, such as profile picture, biography, and follower numbers, but also private contact information like phone numbers and email addresses.

Records also calculated the "worth" of each account based on follower count, engagement, reach, likes, and shares.

The database was initially uploaded and shared by Mumbai-based social media marketing firm Chtrbox, a company that pays Instagram influencers to share sponsored content. Though uploaded by Chtrbox, the database includes info from influencers who have never worked with the company. After hearing from TechCrunch, Chtrbox took the database offline, but the company's CEO did not respond to a request for comment on how the data was obtained.

Instagram parent company Facebook said that it was looking into the issue and aiming to determine whether the data was from Instagram or other sources. "We're also inquiring with Chtrbox to understand where this data came from and how it became publicly available," said Facebook.

STOP USING FACEBOOK. I think we all have good reason by now...yikes.

influencer, defined
a know-nothing, typically unemployable otherwise, that is said to have the ability to influence the behavior or opinions of other lemmings and monetize their purchase decision. A scatter-brain that is seen in some way as a significant or authoritative marketing voice.

Though FB's security is questionable, this has nothing to do with Facebook. People who are IG users gave their info to a sketchy company, and that company got hacked. Surprised we're on page 4 of comments and nobody has said anything.

Also, email addresses and phone numbers are hardly sensitive info. And the rest is public info. There's not really a story here.

lol I'm surprised that someone actually posted this but not surprised no one responded. I don't think it's as fun as jumping on the bandwagon and bashing FB.

I do:
- not put real information on Facebook.
- not read “news”, “option” or “ads” on Facebook. (Most are likely bots or hire trolls).
- interact with people whom I know really exist because i knew them outside of Facebook.
