There has been no formal announcement to the reseller channel in Australia.
All I can guess here is maybe someone from Apple expressed their opinion to a reseller and it was taken out of context.

One problem with it not being locked to a carrier.

You know how we get a (technically) subsidized price, and unlock it for free?

They won't. It will cost something ridiculous around 600-900 USD for one that is unlocked from the start. I guess we are lucky for having our phones locked from the start.

Contact search: Why wasn't that included from the beginning? It's kind of sad that we get excited over features that should have been there from day 1. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone, and I'm not bashing Apple, but that's a simple feature we should already have.

I agree. Maybe Apple just half-assed it and thought, "Whatever, the developers [SDK] will come up with the apps so we won't have to do any work."

Something is telling me that there will be some kind of "global release" of the iPhone 2.0 coming summer... except for a couple of disadvantaged countries.
A global release would require an unlocked iPhone. Apple can't make exclusivity contracts in every country.

An indication that this might actually be the case is that T-Mobile suddenly started to subsidise iPhones last week. Apple seems to change their strategy.

I don't think current price is a subsidised price.
iPod Touch is priced at €279; iPhone 8GB at 399€. The difference of 120€ is more than enough to pay for the additional hardware required for a phone. A lot of complete GSM phones cost less than that.

T-Mobile offers subsidised prices starting at 99€.

i dont have an iphone yet, I am (not so patiently) waiting for the 2nd generation...

quick question... is that bluetooth symbol usually there? if not, does that suggest better bluetooth functionality will be added?

The Bluetooth symbol is there if you have Bluetooth turned on. It lights up blue when a device is connected via Bluetooth.

Yep.
Maybe the constant successful hacking and jailbreaking has altered Apple's vision too. Maybe the potential in a full unlocked iPhone 2.0 now outweighs the current contracts that somehow Apple has bought themselves out..?

Does anyone know for sure what commitments Apple have made towards the current providers?

Agreed! I can't believe this made it to page 1 here.

arh right, thanks kornyboy.
fingers crossed the iphone will connect to my incar bluetooth kit!

Woohoo! SEARCH!

Finally! Only two years after it should have been implemented.

Now that this is done, let's hope for horizontal keyboard configuration in Email and Message some time after 2010.

And of course, GPS capability should be coming up before 2020.

I even hear that Apple is working on implementing that new thing, MMS, in the next decade as well.

Totally agree. I'm a sucker for all things Apple. But I stop drinking the coolaid when I'm asked to believe a search feature and cut-and-paste take Apple - APPLE! - this long to develop and implement.

Search and copy/paste within your small pool of applications isn't hard to do.

Writing a complete search [across local, imap, vpn, kerberos, nfs, smb, etc] API and functionality for the iPhone platform requires a broader vision.

Copy/paste requires that complete search API and it's Distributed Objects API to work which includes OS X Networks, open standards for third party devices, connectivity across various networks, etc.

People want the ability to go to someone's mounted remote folder and drag/drop an important file onto their devices, whether they are iPhones, laptops, servers or desktops.

That unified API is hard to develop as more standards and protocols arrive and become widespread in use.

contact search would be great, it one of the few basic features that I really miss from my old phone, scrolling takes too long with a big list

I'd do a flipturn in the air against my room's wall if the 3G iPhone would be for public, unlocked consumption here in the Netherlands by June or July!

actually this is incorrect.
i work for a reseller in australia and can verify this information.

all of the resellers were given different release dates so that any solid information that any one of us gives to the public can be traced back to whichever one of us is the source of the leak. so i can't say much more.

but i will say that i'm excited =)

so why couldn't i import one and activate it using the australian itunes music store here? i'd end up with the same end product. apple know people are already doing this under the table, they wouldn't want this to keep happening if they could avoid it at all.

Please Release It In June!

I hope that means that the iPhone will be released in that month in the US. It would be great if the iPhone was not tied down to a single carrier, especially when AT&T is not exactly the best wireless carrier in the US. (It's actually either Sprint or Alltell right now.) Like others are saying, however, it is sort of bland to have a simple feature like CONTACT SEARCH as supposedly something exciting. I am more excited about the possibilities that will come up with the new iPhone SDK in the works, which - if you ask me - might lead to the need for a new name for the iPhone.

Sprint the best carrier? Are you joking? I have heard it is one of the worse. The best nationwide carriers generally seem to be Verizon (except for their phone crippling software) or T-Mobile. And anyways, it may not be what you are implying, but the iPhone wouldn't work on Sprint or Alltel since both are CDMA networks and the iPhone is GSM.

Contact search is a waste of time...

It's easier/faster to just remember phone numbers and type them in the "ole fashion" way.

ATT will be the exclusive carrier of the iPhone for a while. They reconfigured there entire network in order to make visual voicemail work. Apparently, Verizon did not want to do that and I'm sure others would not have.

I don't see any other carriers getting a bite of the :apple: pie anytime soon.

BTW...Verizon is the best network in the US right now and I'm a Verizon customer switching to ATT when the new iPhone comes out.

Excited!!

My wife and I are celebrating Father's day this year by buying two iPhones. This sounds like perfect timing!

That doesn't work to well for lots of contacts. Many people I know have ~400 business contacts on their phones. The ones they call often family, best friends etc are all in their favorites but you need a search feature to find Bill at company X.

People getting different information is not a FORMAL announcement

Your statement suggests again there is not formal announcement. People getting told different stories to avoid any solid information going around sounds like someone trying to generate hype.
It may be Apple trying to generate hype, but this is still not a formal announcement and there is not solid information as even you stated.

I agree. No matter how bad Apple wants to open up to other carriers, they signed an exclusivity contract with AT&T who have the right to force Apple to stick to it no matter how badly Apple wants to break free.

Unless.

I guess there is the possibility that there are some exit clauses, situations where Apple could legally be able to exit the contract. Perhaps there is one based on amount of sales and iPhones sold so much better and quicker than expected, allowing Apple to get out of the contract early. Other situations might exist as well. Or might not. Few people know the truth.
