Have compared your rate-per-minute/second between carriers' plans lately?

It's all marketing mate, don't get sucked in... oops too late you seem to believe the outset figures only.

yeah i have
i never go over the cap, it's perfect and the price is right
all my friends agree since getting them on 3
i havent been duped into anything, i'm a happy customer, why is that so bad?

i mean go to three.com.au, it's the headline ad
people here are saying we have the worst data plans in the world, but $15 for 1GB of data, and if you get a phone they give you a free USB modem. I mean, that's cheap as

I believe those people that have hundreds of contacts in their iPhone are in the minority.

Most people prob have 10-25 contacts they call often and the people that have more people they call often need to get a life.

Seriously, though, most of us have select people we call often and for the other people we don't call often, it's not too difficult to scroll through and find the contact. Just my two cents...

But, that's not to say contact search couldn't have been included originally.

Well if you are working for a reasonable size compnay and have an average friend circle.... your contacts are bound to be more than 100.... not to mention your friends friend and your relatives and so on....

Its so annoying having to first tap "S" on the side scroll in the Contacts list..... which migth accidentally take you to contacts starting with "P" and then you have to scroll through an entire row of P, Q and R untill you finally arrive to contacts starting with "S"..... I mean even the basic Nokia phones released back in late 90s had the search feature..... Now for apple this seems like they are trying to reinvent the wheel.... and we are so excited about this all.....

I Love my Iphone more then any other thing I have owned so far.... but lets not give apple credit for this search feature.... It should have already been there in a device which which in ligth years ahead from any present day phone....

Umm, I don't think they will jack up the price. All re-sellers sell for what the online apple store sells their gear for.. I don't see a problem?

Everything here is jacked up in price when compared to the USA. Stupid considering our dollar is very closely matched to the USD at the moment. Sad.

im gonna be straight forward and say if i go into Big-W and buy an ipod i will pay at least 10% extra (if not more) for the ipod at Big-W.....

thats how it is, sorry to say, some places match prices, but not many.

and yes i HATE how america has way cheaper products, even though our dollar is nearly equal. to buy a mbp over here costs so much more then in US (even taking into consideration the exchange rates).

Nice Work

Things are looking good from all of these rumors.

After All

Yea Apple:apple:

Then just go to an apple store. They're all over the place. I assume you're from melbourne, they're giving us an official store soon as well.

According to an article i read online (can't remember where) this is implemented as global search for exchange contacts. Has it been confirmed that this works all around even if you are not using exchange contacts???

How about copy & paste, attach multiple pics in email and save pics from emails etc.??? I really hope Apple gets iPhone OS 2.0 right and doesn't miss any of these little features that we should have had the first time. I am getting the feeling they will surprise us this time! Can't wait to get my new iPhone! :D

Why don't you move here? It's that simple.

I'll gladly trade places with you.

No way that Apple suddenly will sell the iPhone unlocked and without contract, without any catches. That is just too good to be true. It just isn't Apple.

Contact search is a feature that will be very welcome, I think it would be cool if they also had a more global search feature (like spotlight) also.
And of course Copy+Paste is very high on my list.

Are 4G chipsets backwards compatible ? With AT&T talking about rolling out 4G do you think there's any possibility of Apple "skipping" 3G components for 4G ?

You could be right. Zdnet Australia did some research:
(although keep in mind retailers wouldn't say anything anyway)

http://www.zdnet.com.au/blogs/traffic/soa/Blog-Apple-resellers-cast-doubts-on-iPhone-release/0,2001084676,339288081,00.htm

The founder of Apple community site MacTalk has either uncovered the biggest Australian tech news story of the year. Or he's one mischievous bugger.

Apple fans around the nation suffered coronaries this morning after a post on an Apple community Web site claimed Apple resellers have been given Australian release dates for the much-hyped iPhone.

The post suggests that Apple resellers have informally been told that they will be able to sell the iPhone in late June, with access to multiple carriers and no lock-in contracts.

But seven large Apple resellers in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra contacted by ZDNet.com.au, said they have heard nothing from Apple about an Australian release.

David McMahon, CEO of Fone Zone, parent company of massive Apple reseller network Next Byte, says he is still in the dark. "Others may well have been told something but I've heard nothing," he said.

"These things are kept very secret," said a sales manager at a Mac1 store. "We never get told anything. The first thing we do in the morning is check the Apple Web site to make sure nothing new has been released".

"Absolutely not," said another in Melbourne, who said that new Apple products tend to arrive wrapped in black plastic to stop information leaks. "We haven't been told a thing."

"Haven't heard anything at all," said another in Sydney. "You will let us know if you hear anything, yeah?"

The author of the post, a former employee of Apple reseller Computers Now, said that only a handful of sales managers from key Apple partners have been told informally of the plans.

He said that four different store owners had been given four different release dates, close together in mid to late June, so that Apple would know who released the information should it be made public.

ZDNet.com.au contacted all four resellers, none of which revealed any information.

Either Apple is bizarrely selective in who it's sharing its product release information with, or somebody is stirring the pot…

What do you think?

why all the surprise?

I don't know why everyone seems surprised that apple didn't include contact searches, or anything else for that matter. Apple is a company that is trying to make money(or is I should say). They can't put everything they have into the first iPhone. They need generations so that they can resell this great idea over and over again. I knew when I waited in line for 11 hours on iDay that they didn't do as much to this phone as they should have. thats because it already had enough to make people wait eleven hours to get it, as well as, six agonizing months to see it. This iPhone thats coming out now doesn't have everything in it because what about the third gen iPhone?. And Once they've done everything to the iPhone that they can, they'll remodel the outside of the phone and rearrange the software to give it a new feel like they did with the 6th gen ipods. Apple is far from running out of ideas for this phone, and are probably working on a completely different phone as we speak.

I don't get the second part of what you're saying..
but the first part -- mate, do you expect them to give away their services?

Re: second part: I have an iPhone, do you? ;) first part: No, but that's exactly me point, desperate measures to fool cheap-skate such as yourself, sometimes Aussies are so gullible, sorry if I hurt your pride ;)

yes i do go to an apple store, been going to the same place for nearly 10 years.

Oh.. now i see you were just being smug. My pride isn't hurt if a person calls me cheap on an internet forum for wanting my phone bills acceptable -- especially when i'm the one saying they're not expensive and you're arguing they are.

I didn't import an iphone due to the bricking complecations, i like things to just work without me feeling inconvenienced (which is why i'm happy to buy the iphone outright, no matter what it costs.. thanks).

Glad you have your iphone -- but take your head out your arse, and cut down on the hypocricy, just a second ago you were complaining about what you deem to be overpriced rates: "Have compared your rate-per-minute/second between carriers' plans lately?". Good luck with that.

If the deals that have been happening in other parts of the world are offered in Australia, it will be a miracle.

I've lived in the US for a few years now & cost of mobile (cellphone) plans over here is a pittance to what you pay for anything in Australia.

For a start we go by minutes not airtime, and for example in a 50 dollar monthly plan you get about 50 free minutes included then pay about 20 cents for every minute of a call you make after that time. Incoming calls are free however.

Too bad I dont live in Australia, that sounds like a pretty good deal.

I bet you there's no deal with any particular company because Australian companies wouldn't play nice, and because they wanted to charge customers out the ass. The monthly rate is going to be ridiculously high. I'm guessing it starts from $120 per month, and goes to $200.

Not having an iPhone, yet, do you, "Dimwhit", consider AT&T evil or would you say you have had no problems with AT&T (Customer Service, Billing, etc.) and how has your coverage been since AT&T touts more "bars" in more places?

This inquiring mind would like to know. Any other observations from other people are greatly appreciated.

If AT&T is as evil as some claim with lousy coverage, you would think the several million new AT&T iPhone customers would revolt or definitely send Steve Jobs a message!

I've never had a problem. I might have had one billing mistake, and they corrected it immediately without having to argue on the phone for hours like I've seen with friends with Verizon and Sprint.

I get a great signal everywhere—3G in my city. I've had no problems with traveling—to NY lately and Ireland and France in 2005. In fact, my friend who met me, got a SIM from a local telecom in both Ireland and France and couldn't even make a call. I've been an AT&T owner for over eight years.

The only place I don't get a signal is in the very middle of my office. Verizon users get a faint signal, but I believe that's because CDMA is supposed to be better at penetrating buildings. We're under a movie theatre in a brick and metal building and our studs are metal. It's pretty much a faraday cage.

Most people calling AT&T crap are either bunk or I'm an exception. It could be because I live in a large metro area. But I doubt it.

Pennsylvania, USA

we need only a hammer

Oh my gosh... I don't know how much more of this I can take! Day after day of rumors - I just want it released already!!! Argh somebody put me out of my misery :(

and it will all be done: i too am very excited by this australia news. hope it ends up going. when all other countries have fallen, canada will stand at last to only succumb in the end to the dark force of iphone

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up. I have T-Mobile and only get one bar outside of my house (no connection inside) and I'd like to think, I live in the heart of my city. I go down the road a mile and 3 or 4 bars. I know things can be hit and miss and signals at certain locations etc. can be spotty, but it seems that people, for whatever reason at&t done to them, hold such animosity towards that company and are very vocal concerning their hardships / experiences with at&t.

It has always made me wonder whether to take the leap to at&t (not looking to jailbreak - not that techno savvy), but I have had NO concern about the iPhone itself and drool over all it's goodness every chance I get at my local at&t store's iPhone display. I may be purhcasing my first ever iPhone late summer (hoping and praying).

Again, thanks for your experiences and opinion of at&t service and coverage.

Sure thing. Thanks for being open to opinions from satisfied customers. I wonder why people think so poorly of AT&T too. I have noticed that it was usually rural customers complaining. It's also obviously become better since they've been touting their service. I've dropped calls before, but that hasn't really happened much in the last four or five years. I believe that, at least in the past, T Mobile partnered with AT&T so it shouldn't be any worse than what you have now.

I mean, I can't guarantee that you'll get a signal everywhere, but you can't with any cell phone company.

I hate AT&T - they are an evil company..... They sell the iPhone but do not allow their own employees to connect to internal AT&T email using one - not supported by their help desk.....

I'm making due with my iPod Touch (32gig) until I can get an iPhone from anyone except AT&T....

I currently get my internet from a Sprint EVDO card - is 3G the same speed as EVDO?

Derek

Enjoy your 4 year wait. 4 years and 2 months actually.

MacWorld Australia also has a story about the Australian release. Questions such as: "the iPhone is available for upfront purchase much like an iPod touch in Australia, what will that mean for software upgrades? Will customers buying one in June be slugged for an extra $25 in July? Obviously we can do little more than speculate at this stage." are interesting.
