Why do people keep saying this? The MacBook Pro and MacBook had very similar clock speeds of the same processors: MB @ 1.83 & 2.0GHz and MBP @ 2.0 & 2.16GHz. If they are going to keep the MB starting at $1099 then they need to keep this trend. Otherwise drop the price.

You're right, but with the transition going on, I think that may have just happened since they wanted to get the MacBook out there for the school season and didn't want to wait for the MBP to have a better processor.

I'm not sure about this, but I don't think historically the iBook and PowerBook had the same processors at the same speed, well until the end when there was no G5.

if the chips cost the same from the mfg, as i understand them to, then not to swap the cd for c2d just for the sake of differentiating between the mb and mbp lines, and getting folks who care to pony up the extra $$$, is evil. i prefer to think its a supply issue and nothing more that's delaying the upgrades in the mb's. after all, when they upgraded the imac, they did the low end at the same time as the high......

even if it is released by then or around then, that doesn't mean this site is run by someone with insider information, it could just be stupidity.

and isn't taking preorders for something that's not confirmed to be released yet illegal? that'd be like taking preorders for Mac OS X 10.6.

That's just confusing...

As for the November 13th thing, I would love that... I may not be planning to buy one, but any Apple product on my birthday is a good thing.

I agree that it's unlikely that Play.com knows anything at all, but it still makes for a cool rumour. :)

pfft mines the 12th which would suck! because i would have to send back the macbook and get a new one

..soon

I had previously believed no macbook update this year... but now there are signs (maybe I'm just forcing myself to believe it)

for example, (since I'll never order from apple's store again...) checking futureshop out, (im in canada) last week they were selling the lowest end macbook for $1199...which is actually less than on apple's website ($1249) ...Canadian, remember.
Plus, there's only 2 in stock. Even refurbs of pc's list about 50 in stock.
The microstore at the university is completely out of stock too...
maybe it indicates something...maybe not. I'm stuck waiting since apple is still 'investigating' my macbook lost in shipping since the beginning of the month, then one day i'll get a refund, hopefully before the c2d macbooks.

If you look further on, you can see the following:
1. Cache Memory: 2 MB - L2 Cache
2. Powered by the Intel Core Duo

As far as I know....There are no C2D cpu running at 2 Ghz and have 2MB - L2 Cache on sell. So this site's information is horribly inaccurate.

Okayokay, let's be positive, given that it is true

this update...SUCKS?

If you guys look at it by clicking on play.com -> apple, you will also see that the lower end 1.83 Ghz macbook is NOT UPDATED at all!!

That's right! this just totally screwed the lower end user over!

Forgive me if I'm completely out of the loop and non-computer-savvy, but why should I wait for the Core 2 Duo, granted nothing else really changes? Aside from the answer "64-bit vs 32-bit" (because I don't know what that implies), what would I be missing out on? Would I be fine with the 32-bit for a few years? ...or would I kick myself for buying today if the change took place tomorrow?

A kind answer would be amazing! Thanks to MacRumors, I was ALL ready to buy a new MacBook, but NOW you guys have me all screwed up with this waiting game! haha ;)

Trust me I had this problem too  Finally went with a CD MBP no regrets.

So I really won't even begin to notice a downside until 64-bit apps begin to become popular in 2-3 years? ...but then there's no resale value to 32-bit! aaaah.... the agony a few days can be!

Someone please confirm or reject this statement: It would be stupid to buy a CD MB today granted the C2D could be here in a week or two.

Not going to happen until 1st quarter 07. Buy what you need now and don't look back. Something better is always just around the corner.

A tough question, the question is how soon will some one create/release and insanely great/must have 64 bit only app. As soon as that happens, for you, is when you will regret not waiting for the 64 bit processor. A similar, though not identical, situation presently exists with Adobe's announced new audio editing product. It will only run on an Intel based Mac. Any of us, myself presently included, having only PPC based machines will have only two choices, get an Intel based Mac or do without.

The day is coming when all new apps will be 64 bit only but that day is probably a bit in the future. Some how the Boy Scout motto comes to mind "Be prepared"

If you can manage it, wait at least 1 or two weeks... there are a lot of rumors going around at the moment, and there is plenty of opportunity for some more credible information to come out in that time.

Basically, at this stage we dont know what the update will entail (apart from the processor), and even then, we dont know the specifics-- we can only speculate. It IS plently likely however, that if you buy now and there is a release in the next 2 weeks (or even an announcement of an immenant release) you'll be talking yourself out of a good deal.

In short, if it were me-- which it is, in fact-- the answer is yes, missing the next release because of impatience would result in much kicking of ones self. ;)

Cheers.
Ash.

the way of technology

its the way of technology... buy a CD MB now and the C2D MB comes out next week! point is we all think there's an update soon, and it seems theres going to be one sooner than later... so i would just wait... at this point you'ld be paying premium dollars for a machine thats 6 months old... and if you are like me and plan on making this MB your one and only machine for the next 3 - 4 years.. it would be nice for it to be top of the line for at least an extra month

If you bought the CD MB today, the only regret you would have would be feeling ripped off if the new models came out the following week at the same price point. I've been poking around a lot of the forums since June, and for the average user, 64 bit won't matter much for another 3-4 years (so I've heard). I bought my MBP a month before the update, and part of me wishes I could have waited, since the new low end model is pretty comparable to my current high-end model for $500 less. They have refurbshed MBPs selling for $1450 on the Apple site now (low end CD); go for those if you're looking for a deal :D

This guessing game is very funny, every day i came to this site and i read about a new guess, i mean we all can close our eyes, think of a number between 1 and 30 and say oh yeah ... apple is gonna have new MacBooks on this day but unfortunately that is not how things work in this world

You ask your self what is apple really doing, well i think it is very smart what they are doing. MacBooks have been nothing but the hottest seller of computer products this year that apple has had out.

MacBook Pros are better laptops but a lot of us don't have that money but more or less need a MacBook Pro and all the features with it, so most of us buy a MacBook because it does what we need it and at the end of the day it is an Apple Product.

So to make the hype bigger and stronger, apple is making all of us wait, play this guessing game, because they know, most of us want a C2D MacBook and they know that true mac fans wont buy a dell or getway or sony, we will wait, but while we are waiting we will look at the C2D MacBook Pro and some of us will swallow the big pill and buy the MacBook Pro so at the end of the day Apple wins no matter witch way u look at it.

As to when the MacBook Core 2 Duo will come out, no one really knows, my guess is as good as any of yours .... all we can do is wait but really thats what they want us to do is wait and wait.

If you're doing computer stuff that is maxing out a MB, but you don't want to move up to a MBP; or if this computer has to have 5+ years of functionality; or you have to have 802.11n then wait. Otherwise, from what I've been able to glean, you'll be happy with the CD MB.

Core 2 Duo is a bit faster than Core (1) Duo. Core 2 Duo runs a bit cooler than Core (1) Duo. The Core 2 Duo chip is supposedly about the same price as the Core (1) Duo chip. Apple may (or may not) bump up the RAM in its Core 2 Duo MacBooks without bumping the price.

It's a nice incremental update, worth waiting for if you're not in a hurry. I'll probably wait to buy a MacBook that not only has Core 2 Duo, but also has the X.5 operating system. Can you tell I'm really not in a hurry?

it doesnt help that we keep coming back

it doesn't help that each and everyone of us keep coming back and keep posting... i mean look at the "full laptop refresh" thread, it hit 4,000 before going belly up...
as far as the keeping us hyped to make some of us buy MBP's, i dont think that is the case at all considering the price gap between the high end MB $1,299 (im not counting the blackbook which costs 1,499 because its apple charging you an additional 150 for black matte case) and the low end Pro that costs $1,999... im thinking that extra 700 is enough to make someone say "i dont need the pro model since all i need this for is *insert your reason here*"
but you are right... apple is messing with our heads by holding out... and no one really knows when the C2D MB's are coming but steve himself... these forums are like a big support group, and why? because misery loves company:D :D :D :D

Well.....

That site is kind of weird .... ordering a new MB that didn't even come out !!! come on what are they on ...... ???? lol ??? these guys should let up ... on it ...!!!

I hope something is coming out pretty soon ... like this all of us can go out .. and get an affordable powerful brand new portable mac that doesn't cost the 1999 bucks of the MBP, .... well keep hoping ... and supporting u all !!!

CHeerS:D

Here in Portugal is the same thing, retailers (including Apple Center) ran out of MacBooks a few days ago and are unable to say when they're getting new units.

In the mean while, rumors are popping up like mushrooms and, even though most of them may be bogus, it might be a sign. After all, they say that where there's smoke, there's a fire.
