Well, after reading the Specs on the new MacBooks, it doesn't seem much changed. The specs are nothing to jump at, and I hate how the low-end macbook is still 1099, it should be 999 for ****** specs like those.

nope, still 1.08in thick, ur just jelous :p
Funny how Steve wasn't adamant enough with the "thinness" to push the engineers to shave off the remaining 0.08 inches of thickness. Even 0.99 inches would be great marketing for Apple.

New MacBooks, less than an INCH thin!

Please Post Vent Photos

Just bought mine tonight at the Apple Store in Legacy Village. All I can say is... wow. I got the "blackbook", as I just like the look of it better. Upgraded from my old Powerbook Al 1.25Ghz, and wow... what a difference. Sucks I have to do a paper tonight -- been playing with the Macbook for a few hours now...
We need VENT Photos please. Rear view. Keyboard down rear side.

FYI - Legacy Village is an outdoor Mall in a suburb East of Cleveland Ohio. Thanks for being so helpful in telling us this.

My wife wants to replace her now deceased, beloved iBook G3. She asked me about the prices of the refurbed (we've had good luck with them in the past). I checked and it looks like they dropped the price $100+ on them. I can get her the black one for $1099 or the white Superdrive for $999. Speedwise, does it make sense to pay for the C2D? She surfs, does a little photo editing and some graphic work and word processing.
I think your wife will notice a huge speed increase in moving from a G3 iBook to the MacBook. My advice is to save the money and buy refurb for what she wants to do. The Core 2 Duo might get a 10% increase in performance but I doubt you're going to care about waiting an extra 6 seconds for a one minute operation. If you were doing graphics work every day all day long, you might be interested in gaining 30-40 minutes in productivity. In your case, I suspect that you won't notice the performance gain as much as you'll notice the $300 in your pocket.

they're not in a rush to do so
plus, the more compact it gets, the hotter it gets.

Sorry I didn't tell you what Legacy Village -- its the name of the apple store in my area.

Here are pics of the rear of the macbook -- sorry for it being grainy, but all I've got is my phone camera.

Those are the speakers (whoever in Apple that placed those speakers in the back were geniuses. They used the LCD screen to direct the sound to the user), the vents are centered in the back. ;)

Please Try Again For a VENT Shot

Need to use city state designation not Mall name.

Those are speaker shots. We need a good VENT shot which would be while OPEN down from the rear of the keyboard opposite the base of the screen and while OPEN the rear NOT closed.

Nothing that I would really get excited over. However, having a double-layer super drive beginning with the mid-range model sure makes me think twice about going all out for a MacBook Pro.

Lol I don't think Apple did anything different on the outside of the new MacBooks. The way they designed it, 90% of the heat will be directed toward the LCD screen (and the sound :D ) no matter what. I can't wait 'til someone shows the guts of the new MacBook. I'd like to see what Apple has done new to the inside of the MacBook.

Anyone tell me what good is a 64-bit processor other than being able to address more RAM. I know a 64-bit address bus alone doesn't make a 64-bit processor.

I also heard these are not "true" 64-bit processors, just the same old x86 processors w/ 64-bitty goodness added on. Any truth to this?

64-bit address space
64-bit general purpose registers
8 more general purpose registers (from 8 in CoreDuo to 16 in Core2Duo)
Many SIMD instructions take one clock instead of 2

Core2Duo is a "true" 64-bit processor with a 32bit compatibility mode (to run 32bit apps without emulation. This is important because registers get different codepoints and instruction sizes are different between the two)

You may be confusing the Itanium IA64 (Intel's ground-up 64bit with new architecture) and the Core architecture (IA32e: intel architecture 32 - extended) which is the same 32 bit architecture bumped up to 64 bits. The same way that G5 pumped up the G4 architecture to 64 bits without a groundup redesign.

That being said, you can't access any of the perks of 64bit unless the kernel goes into the 64bit mode. Otherwise the OS is running in 32bit compatibility mode and apps can't switch to 64bit mode. I havn't seen mention in the tiger docs about the universal binaries supporting 64bit yet. I think we might not unlock the true power until Leopard.

IA32e (aka AMD64) is a beautiful architecture. And there is much more to 64bit than addressing more memory. Doubling the number of general purpose registers alone will be huge when universal binaries are compiled for 64bit intel.

Does graphic card matter?

I don't play games - will I notice a difference between MB and MBP in the video department? (besides screen size)

Need to use city state designation not Mall name.

Would you like the store number too? Phone number? Mapquest directions?

I think he should go out and purchase professional lights as well. And a decent camera. And he should spend the next hour or two framing the shot perfectly, and then put up a website, www.MBventshotsformultimedia.com. Would that make you happy? Sheesh.

Are all New Yorkers this uptight?! :) sheesh(x2)

MB w/20" vs MBP?

Peter. Is your post a joke or what? You're kidding right?

A 2GB 2GHz MB is RADICALLY faster than what you have. Buy a DELL 2407WFP 24" 1920x1200 for only $719.10 for it and you will be in heaven for just over $2k.

So if I don't need screen size on the road and I'm willing to give up a little clock speed what's the compelling reason to go MBP? (as I said one post above (sorry) I don't game)

they've been doing that since teh 12" powerbooks ;)

Not a bad update, but nothing that makes me want to sell my macbook and get a new one. Maybe when they do something with the graphics.
