I have a dilemma now...

I bought my first mac, the white 2.0GHZ MB a few hours ago with the following specs:
1GB RAM + 160 GB hard drive

But as I'm skimming this thread, I'm having doubts on my ram....should I upgrade to the 2GB?

I'm a student in Canada and it'll cost $195 more with the educational discount. I'll be using the MB as my primary computer. I'm not going to be doing anything really intensive, mostly Office, watching movies, listening to music, and the occasional photoshop editing, but that's it.

I was all set to buy one then I read integrated graphics card... Apple still hasn't learned.

When will people learn that if they want something better than integrated graphics cards to BUY A MACBOOK PRO!!! THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE FOR!! If you don't want to spend the money to buy a Macbook Pro and can't stand a integrated graphics card then go buy a PC!! Stop complaining about it. They are not going to put anything but a integrated graphics card in Macbooks for a while, maybe if you are lucky the next gen will have a better integrated graphics card, but that is about it.

Upgrade 1GB to 2GB • Downgrade 160 to 80 White or 120 Black

Yes because it runs faster with 2GB expecially when you have a bunch of apps open at once and afterwards will cost you more to max it up to 2GB. Apple RAM upgrades are now all cheaper than from third parties. Resale value will also be much higher.

You should also drop the 160 back down to the base size and buy a 160 afterwards and put it in yourself for less money. MB has an Easy Access HD Bay so putting in a bigger one is eazy peezy in 5 minutes. The 160 will cost you a lot less money afterwards plus you get to use the one it comes with externally.

Congratulations on your new purchase.

RAM: Well from what I've gleaned - 1GB is a sweet spot for OSX right now - sure more RAM is always better, but just how much better I don't know - 1GB is plenty for me.

If you have ordered a stock standard MB - you may also get it quicker than if you CTO'ed it.

Interestingly even adding an external modem makes an order CTO also. This morning I ordered a MB fresh off the update line and closed the order. About 20 mins later (when I had finally decided on what else to get) - I ordered a few wireless products, dvi adapter etc - all claiming 24 hour delivery - and they haven't even shipped yet - whereas my MB is already on it's way.

Well it IS causing concern because the integrated graphics are WORSE than the ATI chip in the iBook G4s! Don't just say, 'well buy the mbp! that's what they are for!'
You are buying a $1000-$1200 computer, but it has crappy video. That is just unacceptable, esp when in the market other vendors have much better graphics options for a $1000 notebook. I'd expect something more for a $1000-$1200 computer.

This is again, just apple's business strategy. For similar reasons that the lowest macbook only comes with a combo drive, when on dell.com you can add a DVD burner to their notebooks for $35 extra. With apple, there is no $35 option. But- this is apple, and they are successful in this business.

What about black friday?

Next Tuesday November 14 will be the C2D mini and 8-core Mac Pro announcements. The following week is Thanksgiving and Black Friday when all Apple Stores will offer everything for 10% off including all computers.

Hey, i am about THIS close to buying my macbook tomorrow, but when i called apple today, they said that to get my computer up to Toronto, Canada would take a little longer (perhaps a week or just over 1 week).

Im willing to wait a bit longer (haha, its only been 5 months for me haha) if i can save a few hundred bucks...

Anyhoo, what is the story with black friday and a SALE?!?!?

ps: when is American thanksgiving too?

thanks

Well the only success in Apple is the IPOD everthing else are loses, I think this is because for this kind of stupids Steps like why no give the option of a DVD Burner for an extra $35 or install decent Video Card in a $1000 -$1200 laptop, this kind of things created Concers in coturmers that in the END go to Dell for a better product maybe no as cool as MAC but a much Value for money

I keep reading posts by a lot of people on here ... saying oh Santa Rosa is coming out next year, C2D would be absolute by then ... i don't know where do you guys get your info from

C2D = Merom
C2D = Santa Rosa (the chip will have the same name as today just with few addtions)

Diff between Merom and Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa has frontside bus speed to 800MHz while Merom has frontside bus speed to 667MHz

Santa Rosa will incorporate Express 945GM and 945PM mobile chipsets witch will support Direct X 10.0

Santa Rosa will have new WLAN Chip that will include WiMAX and 802.11n

So to sum it all up ..... Santa Rosa Chips released next year will be called Core 2 Duo Chips like they are called today but will have few additions mentioned above.

So the question really is .. how many of us really care about most of those features or even understand how they work ... so i think MacBook will not see Santa Rosa till Late Q2 or Q3 .... because there is no need for Apple to go with Santa Rosa when MacBook is just a low end laptop line from apple and most people using it don't even know what frontside bus is yet alone what it will do for you.

Looks light my youngest is getting one for her birthday.

I already told her a few months ago to hang in there, so a December model
should work out perfect. 2.0 GHz 1 GB RAM and stock HD is fine for her needs.

if apple banks on the iTV, the mini will find its way into more and more homes...and if they add some sort of subscription service to the itunes store, i think ull find some people will be willing to cancel their cable TV services, and opt for an expanded itune store service

I don't know that iTV will enormously push the mini, because iTV will support Windows too.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade. Macs run ok with 1GB, but I was running 1GB quite a few years ago. Now is the era for 2GB.

Black Friday 10% Off At All Apple Stores November 24 Is Tradition

Black Friday - called that because that is the day that retailers go from being in the RED all year to going into the BLACK, profitable - is the biggest money spent in one day of each year, the day after Thanksgiving November 24 this year. All retailers have incredible sales that day. Apple offers everything 10% off every Black Friday and on new system release days.

Santa Rosa Is All A Pipe Dream And Will Make Less Than 20% Diff In Mobile Mac Speed

Santa Rosa has frontside bus speed to 800MHz while Merom has frontside bus speed to 667MHz.
A whopping +133MHz which will make a theoretical 20% improvement in performance. But when other factors are brought into play, I don't think it will be that much faster. My point is that waiting for Santa Rosa may not be worth it if you need power now. There's plenty to be had in today's new MacBook.
I know .. unless your going to live by a bench mark screen to say wow my book is better then yours ... i see no reason why santa rosa will even matter
If the IG is a deal breaker for you now, there will be better IG graphics with Santa Rosa. But this is all not going to happen until around June well after Leopard is released. And you will be able to address 4GB of RAM then in all the mobile Macs. Hopefully 2GB sticks will be priced much lower by then as well.
*cough* Robson *cough*
Yeah I get it. "ZERO" was a way over the top. My bad.

lame update.

Entry level macbook sucks. And they still have that **** integrated video card.

Not everyone has AU $3000 to spend on a macbook pro. For $2000 AU i expect a dedicated video card.

Asus has a 1.83 ghz c2d with 1gb ram and a dvd burner and a X1700 for $2000 AU (Same as mid level macbook).

Consumers like to play games, despite what Apple says. Pretty crappy apple.

I agree. It would be better if they had a better video card, and it does suck that they have worst video card in it then an iBook. I'm just saying that it seems like people are demanding a real video card in a Macbook when it just won't happen. Apple needs to keep the MB and the MBP seperate some how, or they just wouldn't sell any MBPs. A real video card might make the MB bigger in size. I agree a MB is a lot of money for a bad video card. But a MBP isn't that much more if you really really need a good video card. Also if you need a good video card you are going to also want/need a bigger screen with higher res so a MBP is still the way to go.

Everybody wants a better video card in the MB (including myself), but I just don't think they are going to do it. So people should just get over it and stop complaining. If they don't like it, then don't buy one.

a) I think you wanted to say 'obsolete' not 'absolute'.
b) C2D (Merom) is a processor and Santa Rosa is chipset.
c) It's Merom's chipset (forgot the name) that makes Merom's FSB speed 667MHz. Thus, the Santa Rosa chipset would make the Merom's FSB speed 800MHz.
d) The rest of the Santa Rosa chipset features you listed I think are correct (1am; lazy to look it up).
e) It's not that we don't care about the Santa Rosa's big features, it's just that most of us (I assume) just need a new MB/MBP now and in my case, I'm not waiting another 4-6 months for Santa Rosa even if the chipset could be awesome (or not to some people). I'd rather wait for the Merom shrink 45nm, etc.

In my opinion 1GB is more than fine for you

See! Again, Apples are not cheap. They never were and they will never be. If you want a good video but don't want to pay for a MBP then go buy a Asus PC with a X1700 video card in it. Good luck with Vista!
