This reminds me of the "Mac vs PC" commercial when PC got a Vista upgrade.

It's new Gorilla 5 glass, it won't have any of the problems of the Gorilla 4 glass... It won't break!

It's the new Gorilla 3 glass...

Somehow I feel like I've heard it before :D

Do people here wear skinny jeans or something? I don't know, I've never heard any real-world complaints. Also, screen protectors are for preventing cracks too.

Quite the contrary. Not going to go back and forth all day, but even the 6S does scratch.

I never understand how the youtube videos and such show the guy running nails and knives and shaking the phone up in a sack full of coins. The phone comes out looking mint. Yet, putting the phone in a pocket with maybe bills and it scratches over time.

But does it survive scratches. That has always and will always until proven otherwise be my issue with screens.
My thought too. Gorilla glass's strong suit has always been resisting breaking, while sapphire crystal's has been resisting scratches. I'd like to see Corning develop a more scratch-resistant Gorilla glass, or Monocrystal develop a more crack-resistant sapphire.

To me, scratch resistance is much more important day-to-day. I dislike screen protectors, and with bumpers like these I'd need to be 25 feet tall to start worrying about my screen breaking if I dropped it (and that's with Gorilla Glass 2 or 3 generations old).

My only problem with that video was the "rough surface " test. It was flat and near totally smooth.

And how will we know if the next iPhone makes use of this new Gorilla Glass 5?
Because Apple don't reveal the technology or manufacturer of their glass providers.

I bet it still scratches when you put your phone in your pocket with literally nothing else in it.

I still can't believe that YouTubers will take knives and screwdrivers to phone screens and it doesn't leave a scratch, yet I take care and only out my phone in my pocket on its own and it's riddled with them.

Never a scratch when in my pocket, even with some coins. Now, and then with keys as well. Something you are doing that is not being said or admitted to.

Do you live in a dusty/sandy area? Little grains that end up in your pocket can be hard enough to scratch it. That's where my scratches come from.

I seem to recall that Apple had filed for face-crash avoidance patents on ideas like a pop-out cushion (duh), or an internal solenoid powered weight that "kicks" to make a phone flip over to its back on the way down (like making toast always land butter side up).

Of course, the problem with such ideas, is that everyone would be constantly trying that safety feature out just for fun :D

"Hey Billy Bob, check this out! I'm gonna drop my phone and it's gonna flip over on the way down! Wait. Oops! Hey, it didn't work this time around! @#$%&!! Look at my poor screen!!"

Great! More revenue from repairs and replacements!

The problem with the scratches has never been an issue with the glass. It's the hairline scratches on the coatings on top of the glass.

Yes but Gorilla Glass's tests are very controlled - Notice that the demo phone in their marketing material has raised plastic covering the edges of the phone.

iPhone 6/6s has rounded, unprotected edges very prone to shattering (so I learnt last weekend)

As many there have mentioned, I have personally never shattered a screen but I still get micro scratches all over the screen while just keeping it in my otherwise empty pocket. Didn't think I'd still be rocking a screen protector in 2016 but here I am

easy solution to avoid scratches. one pocket for phone and separate pocket for keys. I spent the extra money and purchased apple's leather case which has a number of scratches and scuffs. Its a 600 dollar purchase, as such a take care of it.

As a feat of material engineering, I think what we're seeing in mobile device cover glass is a really under-appreciated story.

Processor speeds are sexy, and battery technology is getting a lot of talk recently, but I suspect that if I understood the science here it would be every bit as impressive.

Double sided tape and a cat is my secret. Always lands screen side up.

Yeah yeah yeah.....
From GG1 to GG4 there are still as many complaints of scratching/shattering.
I doubt it will change with GG5 or GG6.

I've had iPhones since day one, in my pocket without a screen protector, and Never a scratch. Of course I've always kept my keys and wallet in my other pocket. I tend to snicker at the saps with screen protectors. With that said, I look forward to ever stronger glass to give me the confidence that if I ever did drop my phone, that I would not break it.

Whatever happened to sapphire glass on the iPhone? We have it for the home button and the camera glass, but not the rest of the phone. Apple even has a patent to bond gorilla glass to sapphire, so you get scratch and drop protection. When will we see that?

When the cost of sapphire glass comes down enough for Apple's bean counters to feel warm and fuzzy about it.

That's just my guess.

IDK about this Gorilla Glass. For me, I get hairline scratches. They say it's that oleophobic coat not the glass, but I mean for me, it's a scratch on my screen. It's not a big deal. But I'm just saying.

P.S. I cracked my screen recently from just above waist high. I had a case on but no screen protection except for a film. It's not too bed, and still completely usable and to be frank it doesnt bother me at all. I did switch to a glass screen protector afterwards.
