According to my source, the iPad rumors are true. Apple is opting to go with varying sized iPads, causing them to nix their planned 15-inch MacBook Air that was planned for next year.

Name

The Verizon iPhone will be called:

iPhone V.

That helps to distinguish it as a Verizon-compoatible device, and that will be the main public reasoning behind the name change.

The secondary agenda of the name change will take advantage of the ambiguity of the name in possibly meaning "iPhone 5". That provides a semi-veiled excuse to call it a "new" phone, and to fix the antenna challenges in some way.

Disclaimer

Each and every time one of these rumors about the iphone being picked up by another carrier is shared, it should contain a disclaimer that this is just a rumor and that several similar rumors have been proven wrong before. I have seen people on threads like these proclaim they are upset about having recently resigned with ATT because of this "news".

I too once read these rumors and shared them with people as fact. Now I know this is all speculation. I can even picture people at these rumor sites laughing about getting everyone worked up once again.

There will be no Verizon iphone in the next quarter or year.

If I wanted to make some money I'd bet on this each time. The fact is that I would win multiple times before losing once (if ever).

Do the smart thing on this one topic. Wait for official word from Apple. Otherwise don't believe any rumor about this. The discussion of rumors is certainly understandable (especially on a rumors site) but as I said above, for the casual reader of these sites it should clearly be stated that this same rumor has been repeated multiple times to be proven wrong each time. I would also make it clear on which date Apple is even free of their contract with ATT. I believe its 2012. Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't thing its even possible for Apple to pick up another carrier until then.

Cortex A9 vs. A8.

This means an A9 is 25% faster clock-for-clock than an A8. The A9 will also come in dual/quad core configurations and will go well beyond 1 GHz.

500 MHz Cortex A9 versus 1.6 GHz Intel Atom.

Yup, but I doubt that we'll see all these performance increases delivered to the next iPad because Apple needs to worry about more than just performance, they need to keep one eye firmly on power consumption as well. I wouldn't be surprised if they'd like to reduce the size of the battery in the next iPad so as to trim some weight off it and that means delivering whatever performance they're targeting at a lower current draw. Obviously the increased IPC of the Cortex A9 will be there, and possibly the Apple engineers will tweak the architecture some more to raise that IPC even further, but I'd be surprised if the clock speed was set much above the current 1GHz, maybe 1.2GHz maximum because, coupled with a 1.25 gain in IPC, that still gives a 50% performance boost over the A4.

Of course, but most people on this list can't see that. They want their 5 year old BlueRay technology.
You aren't really a big movie person, are you? You just watch dramas or mysteries on little screens where the whole experience of being in an explosive movie is irrelevant.

You act like Blu-Ray is obsolete. Blu-Ray is awesome. There is nothing even close. Not even remotely. I will grant you that its awesomeness is not something everyone cares about. Clearly you are one of those people that cares more about portability or convenience than video and sound quality. And that's fine for you. But you're not everyone.

Blu-Ray is far from obsolete. Even DVD, which feels like ancient technology at this point, offers superior video quality to absolutely anything you can download or stream from iTunes right now. Watch an iTunes HD movie on a 120" 1080p screen and surround sound, then watch a DVD copy of the same movie played by a good upscaling DVD player (which are like $100 these daysd). The DVD will look better. And a Blu-Ray will just make it look sad.

I believe that iTunes content might finally catch up to DVD in the next few years, but Blu-Ray quality streams are a pipe-dream right now. We'd need a whole new internet content delivery backbone in the US, faster wifi technology, exabyte hard drives, etc. It's a long time coming unless we see a major technology revolution soon.

Verizon iphone will happen in JAN...JMO I think we will see it and I also think that it will be part of AT&T as well.

This makes no sense. Apple has never added carrier branding to any of its iPhones. It's simply the iPhone whether it be for AT&T, O2, Softbank, Telus, whatever.

Apple basically considers the mobile network operator to be a dumb pipe.

Put a front-facing camera on it...

For crying out loud, just put a camera in the refresh. Let's start a new age of video conferencing on-the-go now.

I agree. Also, I doubt there will be a design change. Although, if there is one I'd think Apple would wait until next June to debut that model. With Apple changing mid-cycle it would undermine and contradict the special antenna press conference along with the repetitive stance that there is no problem.

If they redesign I feel it'll be release in June 2011 following the standard iPhone cycle.

I think Sprint has a great chance to undercut Verizon with the iPhone. They have a better data network and are already rolling out a version of 4G. Plus their data plans at the moment are the best of anyones.

A smaller iPad would have to fit in a large pocket - otherwise there's not a compelling reason to pick the smaller form factor over the larger size (in my opinion anyway). 7" may still be too big... it'll depend on the bezel.

My wife's Kindle just fits in one of my cargo pants' pockets - that's a 6" screen, but the bezel is larger than an iPad would likely be since the Kindle has buttons. Also the iPad will be shorter since there's no keyboard.

And if it'll fit in my cargo pants pocket, it will also fit in my coat pocket.

In any case, if the smaller iPad does come out, I'll be the first in line. :D

Right, why would they pump money into a redesign for January, when they have to refresh it all again in June? They wouldn't change the release schedule surely, they've just locked people into 24 month contracts - they might be able to expect people to buy put 12 months, but three quarters? Don't think so... Anyway, why even mention CES, Apple wouldn't use a third party event, focussing on the wider technologies to make a huge product announcement. They would also have to come up with a new name for it, they can't call it the iPhone 5, because it wouldn't be an upgrade for the rest of the world, they can't call it the iPhone 4, because there would be far too much confusion, not everyone understands GSM + CDMA. That's another problem. Something else, Chinese New Year is the 3rd Feb, they can't release a product and then not be able to make any because the Chinese population go on holiday...

Anyway, I reckon we'll find out in September, Steve said the bumper offer would extend until end of September, then what? There's obviously something he needs to explain... it's amazing, for a product that supposedly isn't flawed, they seem to be completely reengineering it (whatever happened to 2 years in the test labs? You can claim it might not be a huge difference, it is, they would have to completely reconstruct the primary part of the phone... that's pretty major, not something to be done in 6 months. Maybe they already started development when they realised it wasn't going to work? I would have thought Apple had more sense then to release a flawed product, then update it and upset their loyal fanbase... And why would they have a 3GS (worst), an iPhone 4 (AT&T, flawed), and then iPhone 4CDMA (Verizon, fixed) - why would anyone choose to get an AT&T phone then? Putting customers who don't get good Verizon coverage off.

Just my thought.

A diskless Apple TV? Hopefully this means cloud-based iTunes. If not, I would hate to have to stream everything from my computer to the ATV. Especially with crappy network performance.

Nope. The next iPad models won't come with a new display/CPU. Just 512 MB and a camera. That's all. Sorry.

More importantly; That's when Apple starts looking for a new CEO as Steve will step down in 2012 [Steve personally said, in 2005, that the old should make room for the new]. Here's a rumor that isn't all about hardware :D

I don't doubt that there's a market for a 7" iPad (though it's probably not very large). But it won't happen.

Even the first-party iPad apps have buttons that are *tiny* even on a 9.7" screen. Either those apps need to be redesigned to have one look for everybody (ie, oversized buttons on the "big" iPad), or they need to support yet another screen size profile, leading to an inconsistent look.

There are so many reasons why this doesn't fit in with the Apple product line. How will they sell it? What's the big wow moment at the unveiling of the 7" iPad?

There isn't one. It's just smaller. It's big enough so people will expect a real interface, but not small enough to be significantly more portable. It would be an unmitigated nightmare for all involved.

Sadly I think, this.

I wouldn't think Apple would all the sudden abandon the "A4" as it is now in multiple devices...unless they make an "A5" which is based of the A9 architecture. Apple is all about branding technology as theirs these days...

The Verizon iPhone rumor might finally be substantiated, announced this year, and coming out next year.

Verizon will reimburse ATT customers their ETF if they jump ship to them for the new iPhone......but you gotta admit this would be awesome!!:D

Neither Apple nor Verizon will have anyone under contract in 2011.

So what? RAM is RAM, no matter if on-chip or off-chip. The comparison with cache is not applicable, cache isn't RAM, not even remotely.

Cache is often implemented using at least 2 RAMs (random access memories), one for data, the other for tags. Sometimes many more RAM blocks for the tags.

Will the iPad have a freaking stylus?!

Sure, comes with 10, your fingers! :) Just kidding. :p

I absolutely agree with you. I would REALLY like to use an iPad to take and annotate lecture notes (PDFs). That would be awesome. Not just some random 3rd party app and pen... Saw a couple of people got iPads in class but that that's still read-only and still need pen and paper to jot things down.

Webcam as well... if Apple really wants to expand the FaceTime market this is pretty much how they should do. Stick a webcam onto all of its iDevices...

Steve Jobs at WWDC 2007 (I think ;)):

"Who want's a stylus? You have to get them out, put them away, lose them, yuck! No one want's a stylus."

According to Steve Jobs, you are a minority. :D

will this verizon iPhone, be the speculated iPhone 5 ?

Isn't there rumors that Apple would release the "iPhone 4 1/2" to fix the antenna issues early next year? I wonder if it is linking to the January Verizon rumors?:confused:

Cool, maybe the Apple A5 will be Cortex A9-derived. (the A4 was based on the Cortex A8)

I hate to rain on your parade Verizon fanboys/girls but the chips are not for Verizon or any other North American carrier.

They are for a China device which is most likely an iPad possibly with a smaller 7" screen for a lower entry price.

Apple has repeatedly stated that they will not make a CDMA iPhone but an iPad is a data only device so the limitation of voice or data but not both at the same time does not apply.
