So we're to expect that a miniature computer with no real use for the interconnect in the first place is going to be one of the first recipients of a just finalized standard?

Meaning we expect that the very first generation of components built for said new standard will be suitably power-optimized, miniaturized, and produced in enough quantity to be practical in a portable device roughly the dimensions of an ipad?

AND sell for ~$500?

Kudos for labeling this as pure speculation - but this is just _bad_ speculation. Like should be posted on "page 7" bad if there was such a thing.

But, I'm sure putting it prominently on the front page will get the rest of the rumors/gadget web worked up into a froth, pushing the page views / ad revenue up... so why not.

Magsafe?
You then have cables that come off easily, it helps with docking the copper/optical side.
You also get a quicker charge than USB - you could charge via a Mac's Mag Safe cable rather than just USB.

Could be displayport.

Hybrid cables of USB 3 and light peak.
Its a stretch but think about it wouldn't waste a port and would be multi-port capable not to gray out an area with windows.

Why would they introduce light peak on an iPad before a Mac...? There'd be nothing to connect it to. I can just imagine all the "This USB port doesn't work!" comments now.

Come on, we've had a great week full of credible rumors and it was just ruined with this. If the Chinese took a picture of a case with an optical drive slot would you post that too?

I'm going to guess that it's a micro-USB. That's becoming the standard port for smart devices, and it also looks like there is a lack of the dock connector on it. That would mean that the only people that would be able to use the second gen iPad for a while would be people who bought new MBPs, assuming that LP is included in those too. I just don't see it.

At least new "news" keeps the traffic on the site, keeping the money coming in from Ads, hey? ;)

This is not a rumor. It's purely speculation, which we generaly avoid, but it raises an interesting topic.

really? This place should be renamed MacSpeculations.com

It's also not an interesting topic; there's nothing but some 3rd party case to go with right now... can we have MBP rumours please?

Oh brother. This is getting out of control. If PC's wont see it until later this year (or early next) there is almost no chance it suddenly shows up in an iPad now.

Still - this is Mac Rumors I suppose.

Why would they introduce light peak on an iPad before a Mac...? There'd be nothing to connect it to. I can just imagine all the "This USB port doesn't work!" comments now.

What about the new MacBook Pros due out this week ?

1. I doubt it
2. IF the iPad 2 gets "Light Peak" before a desktop system, well, I have no comment

"Light Peak" was shown on a "Mac Pro" (certainly not the first and only desktop to utilize it thus far). I would believe that a desktop/work station would benefit more from "Light Peak" as it unifies so many differing inputs with less controllers/hardware. Employing "Light Peak" in an iPad is like putting a Bugatti engine in a Ford Focus… well, you get the point…

It is raining rumors!! Maybe it is getting close to the announcement! I am guessing March 2nd! Can't wait!!

I wonder how many haters will apologise to Arn if the iPad 2 does get Light Peak?

Anyway, the real question is what is that case doing on a sea anemone?

Just to stem the hate. This is not a rumor. It's purely speculation, which we generaly avoid, but it raises an interesting topic.

The alternative explanations are:

1. no new port. case designs and rumors are wrong
2. USB port coming to iPad
3. Another type of port?

I think it makes more sense than anything else Arn. Don't listen to all the haters!

Why would Apple put a USB port on? Talk about archaic! What, no Macs have light peak yet? Just wait till Thursday, and watch every Mac after that this year come with LightPeak. Including LightPeak AND the standard iDevice connector could be their transition from the latter to the new LightPeak standard. Not to mention, LightPeak devices are targeted at release all this year and the iPad 2 won't be out till nearly half way into it. So why would Apple wait another year to make the move? Apple co-developed LightPeak and is obviously very anxious to get it into their products asap! I just hope it goes fiber optic sooner rather than later.

The only way you could believe there's even a far-fetched "snowball's chance" that this speculation is true is if you have basically zero understanding of computer engineering, component design, and simple economies of scale.

Can't see why the iPad would need yet another connector port since it has a 30-pin dock connector that can do so much already.

As a few of us said elsewhere it might not be a port at all, but rather an IR transmitter, so that you can remote control any device made the last forty-something years. Just download the appropriate app; no dongles required! I think Apple would sell many such iPads as 'Crestron Killers'! We already know it makes a great remote from all the apps available now, but buying dongles is a PITA, and they can get lost so easily.

Light Peak, an optical interconnect for mobile devices that can run as fast as 10Gbps.

Light Peak is intended to also go into mobile devices like phones.

MBP's coming next week. :)

The new iPad will also be 3D and make you breakfast in bed.

If it also cleans up the kitchen after making the breakfast, than I'll take two... :D

Yeah Yeah I know :D, I'm just surprised it might go into a small device when the iMac and Mac Pro could benefit from it so much more. Less ports on a portable such as the MacBook would allow for more interior space or simply make it thinner/smaller. A Mac Pro with "Light Peak" running graphics, HDDs, external devices, etc would be fantastic! Plus, what would the iPad's "Light Peak" connect to? Wouldn't it have to have a "Light Peak" enabled system for full usage, or utilize a "Light Peak" - "USB" adapter?

OK I just reread your comment, MacBook's next week… I swear if it comes to the Mac Pro this year after I just ditched my '08 8-Core for a Westmere 6-Core I will be  lol

This kind of reminds me of the BestBuy "Buy Back" service, you can never keep up with the latest tech:
