More accurately:

They didn't admit the issue, they claimed that some people might have an issue.

Didn't address the issue with facts and figures, they simply claim that other phones are the same in terms of "bars" (and got the columns mixed up). If all phones are the same, why does only the iPhone 4 have this issue?

Some waffle about their PhD scientists and engineers and $100 million test chambers.

They then claimed that hardly anyone complained or returned their phone. Why bother complaining when Apple already know, and why return it when you really like the phone and just want it to work?

Offered a case. That isn't a solution, it's a bodge. A solution is replacing or repairing the phone to make it work like it should. Don't forget, though, that there isn't an antenna issue. We're just offering the case for those who think they might have an issue.

End of line.

Do you drop calls on your iphone often? More than previous phones?

SJ:We knew if you gripped the iPhone in a certain way, the bars would go down, just like every smartphone. It's a challenge to the industry and we're hoping to contribute to some solutions over the coming years.

I can cover my Nokia phone totally with my hands. No signal loss.

I'm sure the reception is affected but not as much as the iPhone 4.

Just Hope this P.C gives confidence back to consumers.

people not satisfied with this should just return the phone to make a statement. Whining on the internet is is not gonna be counted toward any stat. Apple did what many people wanted them to do - admit there is a flaw. aside from a complete overhaul, there is nothing they can do about it. There will be no recall because you can still go and return the phone. People that want to keep the phone get a free bumper/case to help alleviate some of the issues. Still not satisfied? you can still return the phone. I'm sure its disappointing to some, but we all knew not everyone was gonna be happy with the outcome.

I'm still waiting for the "What about people who want to use the iPhone without a case" question. They never ask the right things.

Why is that a good question? I use mine with and without a case, and never have an issue. If you have problems, get a droid x. I hear they are good.

Admit it! Apple got game baby. How many other company CEOs would have come on stage to do this?
The BP guy pulled a Kenneth Lay. "I DON'T KNOW!"
Jobs pulled a winning chess move. CHECK MATE!
I love my iphone 4!!!!!!

You have that right. There are three sides to any situation. His side, her side and the truth.

10:41AM Q: I can't get my Bold to drop right now, maybe you can show me how to do it?
Steve: You may not see it in certain areas.

Translation: You will only see dropped bars on other phones in our $100million test chamber where we turned the signal strength all the way down for testing the other phones...

What a tool this guy is. Overall I like Apple products but I'd like to punchasize his face!

well thats a pretty dumb thing to say isn't it.

like loads of people have been saying, if your not happy with the phone send it back for a refund!

I have no issues with my phone, yes i have a bumper but even with it off it works just fine.

Neither does the iPhone 4. You just have to press hard on a certain spot. That's not touching to me. That's deliberating trying to find a problem.

Obviously, you havent experienced the problem - but you don't have to press hard AT ALL. If any part of your finger touches the problem spot, you're done - in certain areas.

I don't know why people who aren't having the problem cant realize this but.... You're area might not have an issue. This issue doesn't occur everywhere. Wait until you move, or go on vacation and start seeing this pop up. You'll be plenty happy then, I'm sure!

This was my first iPhone purchase. And it's a really amazing gadget. And while I can hold it such to make it drop bars (sometimes), I haven't had a dropped call or anything yet. I imagine if that consistently (or even occasionally) happened I'd be ticked about it and would seriously consider returning the phone and asking for a replacement or a refund. I would not act as if Steve Jobs personally ransacked my wallet and took my hard-earned money. I chose to buy the phone. If you want to swap commentary on how you're disappointed with how the new iPhone turned out, that's one thing, but the garment-rending melodrama from the people in here is mind-blowing. It's a wonder the forum server doesn't crash as it's full with peoples' sense of entitlement, bile, and bitterness. Go outside and hang out in the sunshine for a while or something. Sheesh.

LOL @ the Droid X burn by Steve:

"You could make a really big smartphone that doesn’t have this problem — some of these guys are making Hummers now — so big you can’t get your hand around it. But no one’s going to buy that."

Wtf?

BS. all of it. nice how "exact data can't be provided". how about when i went in after i got my 3G and they told me it dropped 12% of calls and that was perfectly acceptable?

the phone has the same issues as every other Iphone since the 3GS. nobody gives a crap about the position you hold it in, who holds it that way anybody?? all it did was bring the connection issues to the forefront. i have had an iphone and blackberry on 3 different networks in europe and US and in every case blackberry crushes the iphone for connection (despite being a POS in every other dept). they have a real problem and how they can't fix it and somehow blackberry with their archaic phones can actually manage to make them work like phones is beyond me. i am sorry but if you are one of those people that swallows the apple pills and blames AT&T you are an idiot or a hermit. you don't have a friend with a blackberry on the same network without this issue?? i work for a fortune 200 company that started supporting iphones but after a couple months all top executives switched right back to blackberry's, these guys can't be dropping calls left in right. despite this rant i love my iphone but i would swap it for an android phone if my work would support it or if blackberry made something that wasn't from the stone ages.

thanks for the free bumper steve.

"Now when we look at this data, it's hard to escape the conclusion that there is a problem, but that problem is affecting a very small number of users. I get emails saying the phone works perfectly, and they can't understand what this is all about. So we think it's affecting a small batch, but it has to do with inherent problems in smartphones. But we want all of our users to be happy."

Got this quote from Engadget.

Again, he didn't admit there was a problem with the iPhone4. He 'admitted' to a problem with "all" smartphones.

WOW, what a bunch of BS coming out of his mouth. I love the part when he said that they KNEW of the problem, but didn't think it would be a big deal...WTF are you stupid? If there is a potential issue, there WILL be people that have issues. That right there should tell you that you should do something about it before you sell it...why?? well NONE of the other iphones EVER had or has the problems that the iphone 4 has now. PERIOD. why in the *** would you make a product knowing that there will be some kind of issues with atleast SOME people!!! I don't care if its .55% or not!!! Like he said thats not good enough for them and it shouldn't! Ok, you get a case, but I have read reports that it dosn't help, and for christ sake....why should you have to have a case on it when you didn't on any of your other iphones??? I love the iphone and can't wait to buy one, awaiting native service here in WY that is coming soon, but come on apple...do the right thing!

Is it just me or does anyone else see on the screenshot of the white iphone from the press conference, that the "antenna line" is on the other side of the phone? (the sim card side)?

There's a line on both sides.

Oh wow, Jobs just said that he already knew during the launch keynote that there was a problem, but that they didn't want to tell customers how to hold the phone. GREAT.

Why the 9/30 deadline? By then, the media will have grown bored of this hype and moved on.

"- Only 0.55% of iPhone 4 customers have called AppleCare about the antenna issue."

Because 95% of those with the issues know that there is no fix yet, and are "smart" enough to check the net about the issues.

Actually, your are simply wrong. The vast majority of people who had a problem with their phone dropping calls where their previous phone did not would call the manufacturer. You clearly think everyone in the world is like you and spends all their time focused on tech blogs. This is actually a very tiny minority of the total population.

10:53AM Q: On the September 30th date, is that to let people know that you'll have to buy a case?
Steve: Not really, we'll reevaluate then. Maybe we'll have a better idea. Maybe Eminem will come out with a band-aid that goes over the corner and everyone will want that.

Lol.

Are you saying on Apple fans posses those skills and everyone else is a ****-slinging monkey?

Not saying that. Many 'fanboys' are defending Apple for just as stupid of reasons. There are plenty of us neutral people on here who see this issue for what it is: An overblown media cluster-f**k making a mountain out of a molehill.

I wonder how long it will take Apple to send out the cases for customers who file a claim on their website. It's going to be interesting to see which other cases are offered as well.

Well, SJ has drawn a line in the sand. From the tenor of the Q&A it doesn't sound like the Reality Distortion Field is working properly on the press.

*sigh*. At least I'll be getting a free case with my white i4 at the end of the month. Hopefully they will have added a nonconductive coating to the antenna in the manufacturing process by then.

10:52AM Q: Is there anything you could have said in the launch keynote to lower expectations?
Steve: (Long answer) Not really. We could have said "hey if you hold the phone in this certain way you might see some signal attenuation..." We're human. We make mistakes, and we figure it out fast. That's why we have the best and most loyal customers in the world.

so he did know about the "issue"???? or am i reading something thats not there
