I'm returning mine. Maybe I will be the only person sending Apple a message doing this; however, I'll buy another one in 2 months or so. By then I think they will have done something in the manufacturing process to fix it.

Sure, it would be nice if 50% of people did this but what are the chances?

If you don't like the phone or fix, I would return the phone.

10:46AM Q: Are you willing to make an apology to investors?
Steve: You know we hear from customers who love this phone and have a great experience with it, and we're doing a lot to help them with any issues they're seeing. To investors, you know, you invest in the company we are, so if the stock goes down $5... I don't think I owe them an apology.

You go Steve!

i like steve, hes getting awfully thin tho. he needs someone to fatten him up. i know its his liver n sht. I think they have done the right thing. Smoke a doobie and go play some video games. ;)
Or get back to work, if you have a job.

I've bought the white bumper and it's supposed to be coming in Wednesday. I can't decide if I want a refund or if I want to get a second case...

Those white bumpers are going for $50 on Ebay. Of course this news might change that...

I think Apple is getting to big for their britches. Jobs is getting to be a little too proud. This is why I jumped ship about a year ago. Plus that phone is still on the crappy 1990's ATT network. My town will probably never get 3G with ATT.

Why are you on this site then? Why don't you go to ubuntu forums or windows forums or chrome os forums? I use and love apple products and as an engineer I realize how hard it is to make great things. Apple messed up on part of the design this time but I'm not going to set the company on fire for it.

I really don't see the problem here.

Maybe I'm more mature than most on here (which wouldn't be hard being honest), but Steve has demonstrated that other smartphones by other manufacturers have this issue if you grip them in a way that crushes the signal.

This is not unique to the iPhone 4. That's the first thing. That's the facts of the matter. Go ahead and moan, bitch, complain, cry, take a tantrum, stamp your feet, whatever ... hell, return your phone.

The next thing is that people need to accept that this issue isn't affecting every, single user.

Third, this whole thing HAS been blown out of proportion. As Steve said, it's like "X marks the point". The second it was pointed out you could touch it and make something happen, everyone began trying it.

I still don't know anyone who makes calls holding the phone like that. Deep within your palm, the pad of your thumb keeps the phone away from your face. While browsing the web, as a right handed person, I hold the phone in my left hand in the "death grip", so to use my right hand to navigate the device. While about about in a decent area where signal is strong, there's no drop in bars.

Sky News are being positive about this, bloke from Stuff magazine is on saying the iPhone is a superb device, the Sky presenter is trying to make the bars drop LIVE on television, and they won't. And that's inside a studio.

People will no now doubt quote me, attempt to ridicule me, and I hope you have fun venting, I won't be watching ...

WeegieMac has left the building.
What is with you and your stupid Sky News references. Go watch it and stay away. Geez...

"- Only 0.55% of iPhone 4 customers have called AppleCare about the antenna issue."

Because 95% of those with the issues know that there is no fix yet, and are "smart" enough to check the net about the issues.

Yes, antenna design to avoid someone gripping it so that the bars disappear is INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT. These geniuses never thought that maybe, just maybe if they put the antenna at the TOP of the phone where virtually no one grips it instead of the bottom corner where everyone grips it, they MIGHT just MIGHT not have that problem anymore! Steve is telling everyone that all smart phones have this weakness, but he's not telling you that not all smart phones were designed stupidly enough to put their antenna right where you hand is going to cover it (especially if you're left-handed).

I'm glad I didn't buy one of these phones. Bumpers don't cut it. They need to fix the location of the antenna period. If that won't happen until IPhone V5.0 then that's the soonest I'll consider buying one. Given Apple's current plans for obsolescence that probably means about a year from now. V5.0 software will probably drop the iPhone 3GS about that time as well to try and force you to upgrade yet again. Come to think of it, I don't think I want one period. I'll stick with a cheap pre-pay phone and my trusty 1st generation iPod Touch will do just fine.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

And there we have it. Sucks they can't fix the problems for everyone, but they're not going to, so if you're unhappy, time to pick your poison: free case, different grip, or different phone. Those are apparently all the options you're going to get.

Admit it! Apple got game baby. How many other company CEOs would have come on stage to do this?
The BP guy pulled a Kenneth Lay. "I DON'T KNOW!"
Jobs pulled a winning chess move. CHECK MATE!
I love my iphone 4!!!!!!

Neither does the iPhone 4. You just have to press hard on a certain spot. That's not touching to me. That's deliberating trying to find a problem.

Please read the anandtech article again. You almost lose 20 dB by just holding it in a normal way and UP TO 25 dB if you really try to cover the complete phone with your hand. Just putting 2 (two!) fingers on the antennae will stop any data transfer on the iPhone 4.

Good presentation by Apple, but unfortunately you can't satiate the public (especially the American public) with silly things like facts and data. We don't want to be burdened by things like critical thinking and analyzing situations, we make decisions based on gut feeling and media frenzy!

For the record, my iphone4 is fine and all my friends with them (4 of them) have NO problems with theirs either.

From the engadget coverage ...

What exactly have they worked on then for 22 days? Changing the bar visually is the only the they have done other then finding excuses why the phone works. Shelling out free cases was the least to be done and it comes 21 days late.

Besides that whole crap about drops less then one call more then the 3GS is total balony without an absolute number to compare to. If the 3GS drops 0.25 calls in 100 then ~1 more is an 400% increase ..

T.

Deal with it. Options are pretty clear.

The iPhone4 destroyed Whoopi Goldberg.

I think he means she destroyed it (cute play on words though :) ).

This:

Whoopi Goldberg smashes up her iPhone 4

While some may not be satisfied with this press conference, the statistics demonstrate that most users are not experiencing the signal issues that many in the tech industry have been complaining about (and let's face it, we are a small community and tend to get heated over issues that aren't generally that hysterical). Keep in mind, it's also on AT&T's network, which can't be making matters better.

More accurately:

They didn't admit the issue, they claimed that some people might have an issue.

Didn't address the issue with facts and figures, they simply claim that other phones are the same in terms of "bars" (and got the columns mixed up). If all phones are the same, why does only the iPhone 4 have this issue?

Some waffle about their PhD scientists and engineers and $100 million test chambers.

They then claimed that hardly anyone complained or returned their phone. Why bother complaining when Apple already know, and why return it when you really like the phone and just want it to work?

Offered a case. That isn't a solution, it's a bodge. A solution is replacing or repairing the phone to make it work like it should. Don't forget, though, that there isn't an antenna issue. We're just offering the case for those who think they might have an issue.

End of line.

Just return it and stop the whining already. when will it end!

I'm still waiting for the "What about people who want to use the iPhone without a case" question. They never ask the right things.

your damned if u do, your damned if u dont. people wanted free bumpers/cases. so be it. your wish has been granted. now your not happy with that?

just take ur phone back for a refund if ur not happy
