Not sure where you got that from. The design will remain the same until they release iPhone 5 (or whatever it will be called). September is simply the cutoff date for getting free cases, which after that they will re-evaluate the situation.

I expect there will be unannounced changes mid-cycle to address the antenna issue on the iPhone. This happens all the time with the auto sector, appliances sector and electronics sector. Instruction manuals seem to always have some statement saying that their product may change or may not be exactly as illustrated. This allows subtle changes to be made on the product in mid stream.

I wonder how other manufacturers will respond to Apple calling them out so to speak. I bet we see a few commercials that attack the iPhone4 directly. Verizon will probably do it unless they have a hush hush agreement with Apple for an iPhone4. If they don't attack it like they did with the coverage commercial war I think a ViPhone is in the pipeline.

I think that's a very good bet that Verizon will attack on this front, they have already being making fun of the Apple's instructions for holding the iPhone4. I can definitely see this happening, Verizon could definitely get some traction by running with this in promoting the new Droid phone that came out yesterday. The meme is out there, they just got to run with the perception.

Sure a lot of this going on around here......

Sadly, because its Apple, people want to find and invent problems that don't really exist so they can feel good about bashing something.

For some, I'm sure its a personal deficiency thing. They only feel good when they can throw a rock at a flaw, however insignificant, at something or someone they admire. Inferiority complexes are like that....tear down others to feel better about yourself.

yes

Soooo, you've met him? You know him? What?

I have met the man, a couple times and I would say that he used to have more character. Like a very inquisitive child, big open eyes, very dynamic and curious. Also, very enthusiastic. He MAY still be that way, but he doesn't seem to show it in public.

Lol how many companies do you run?

Thank you!

Steve has Zero Character? How about our last president, the previous CEO of GM, lead financial experts on Wallstreet, and countless others? The kids that destroy this forum lately. Wow.

I'm making the full and final switch to Android.

I'm SURE you will. Report back to me on that in August.

Either you:
A) Don't switch (most likely)
B) Switch and switch back
C) Switch and get an iPod Touch
D) Don't even own an iDevice and like trololololing

probably that and the fact that android and Blu Ray are dead!

Probably because 99% of happy customers out there don't have/don't feel/don't care about a "problem" that has been reported by a select few in the last months.

Seriously....

"Steve: You know, the 3GS has the same problem. We're getting reports from customers that this is better than the 3GS."

What a blatant lie!

The 3GS doesn't lose 20dB when you touch it.

...I called Steve and said hey, mines great, I've done the death grip thing and still no issue with my signal. I think it's the best phone ever, and in fact I thought the reception was better than any phone I've had in the past.

I also told him that it seems that the UK appears to be ok with no major issues and I've yet to hear from other Europeans about attenuation issues. In fact one guy from France also did not report any issues.

When I asked him whether it was an issue with AT&T's network he put the phone down on me!

Still stoked with mine, its great.

If you aren't satisfied with the phone go and return it and buy a phone that meets your needs.

It's really not that complicated.

I've spent a lot of money on Apple products over the years and I have a lot of applications which don't work on any other phone. So I can't really take it back now can I?

And to the person above who thinks they wouldn't modify the design until iPhone 5, what do think re-evaluate means? You think they will do nothing about it and that they want to keep giving bumpers/cases away until next June, all the while showing everyone else that their fantastic new phone does not work properly - Wake up sunshine!

If you can solve the antenna problem for the smartphone industry, get a PhD and some patents. You'll be rich.
Well, Apple didn't exactly contribute to a solution by making an antenna that can not only be attenuated the usual way, but also bridged by being lightly touched.

Question for Steve 2 years from now: "As we all know, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. What conclusions do you draw from that fact that everyone copied your multitouch interface but nobody copied your antenna design?"

Steve Jobs wants to know how we could do better? Send the iphone to Verizon finally. Duh.

Apple simply can't fix it. You'll just have to live with it if you like the phone enough. Otherwise try an Android phone. They're now comparable. iPhone is not the only choice out there like it has been for the last 3 years.

Did you catch the fact that Steve Jobs tried to poke fun at the larger smart phones that don't have this problem by calling them Hummers? A couple of interesting facts about that...he started the presentation by stating that all phones have this issue - but then went on to say that some don't have the issue. He further stated that no one would buy one of these large "hummers".

He left out the fact that the DroidX and Evo are sold out...because of high demand! The distortion field is still in effect if he believes his own PR spin. Because while the iP4 is selling like hotcakes...so is the competition. And right now - Android is the fastest growing platform in the smart phone market.

Apple has (probably well over) 100M invested in RF design and testing. In 2012, smaller cellular manufactures will probably copy Apple 2011 antenna design because they haven't invested enough to do better.

omg 33 pages

Wow, talk about a hot subject.

Glad about the prox issue and apple being up front. I got binked on mute when I was discussing issues with Apple support on my first day.

When I got my v4 on launch day I had already read about the possibility of issues of back scratches and made sure I got a bumper. No big deal, for I always get a case. Glad I did, I ran tests on my phone (with and without) and saw how holding it naked made the bars drop at home. But funny, no dropped calls the way I used to get them with the 3gs that was also in a case. I never understood why holding it caused the bars to drop, but now, with all the focus on the subject, I understand. We are all educated and focused on the reality of antenna design.

Overall, I've been in tune with Consumer Reports overall assessment of the device. It's great. Fast, better reception for me, great camera, easy to get firmware updates not held back by manufacturers, camera flash that makes for a terrific flashlight and smaller in my pocket. I'm happy.

And yeah, I'll be looking at the 3rd party cases when the form gets published next week to see if there's a full coverage case that offers better protection. Thank you Apple.

All I can say to those deciding to return the thing, stay away from Motorola droids with their recent shift to e-fuses that brick the device if mods are done to firmware. There's an example of a company that doesn't give a hoot. Is there a Motorumor site to go to so I can watch the fireworks?

Laypeople know next to nothing about the design and operation of antennas. The media loves a controversy, and trump up every little thing to squeeze more advertising revenue from it. 2 + 2 = 4. This situation had no possible outcome that was positive or neutral for Apple, either for PR or money. So, they took the path of least resistance, and provided a solution that will satisfy any reasonable customer. Satisfying malcontents isn't a good business plan. They have enough money to pay for the solution, they have PR ability to spare, and the media can continue to make a story out of it, because malcontents will loudly whine about literally anything. Everyone wins!

No one who has more than a handful of braincells to rub together should be surprised at all with what happened today. Nor should that demographic expect there to be a magical solution to the problem of human flesh being an effective absorbing medium for RF radiation. If you are obsessively fixated on perfect cellular telephone reception, you might try one of these, and a few of these, as directed by a physician.

For the last time it's how apple is handling the situation. Every phone experiences this I understand but not as severe as the iPhone 4 get off your high horse and figure it out
