Wow, talk about a hot subject.

Glad about the prox issue and apple being up front. I got binked on mute when I was discussing issues with Apple support on my first day.

When I got my v4 on launch day I had already read about the possibility of issues of back scratches and made sure I got a bumper. No big deal, for I always get a case. Glad I did, I ran tests on my phone (with and without) and saw how holding it naked made the bars drop at home. But funny, no dropped calls the way I used to get them with the 3gs that was also in a case. I never understood why holding it caused the bars to drop, but now, with all the focus on the subject, I understand. We are all educated and focused on the reality of antenna design.

Overall, I've been in tune with Consumer Reports overall assessment of the device. It's great. Fast, better reception for me, great camera, easy to get firmware updates not held back by manufacturers, camera flash that makes for a terrific flashlight and smaller in my pocket. I'm happy.

And yeah, I'll be looking at the 3rd party cases when the form gets published next week to see if there's a full coverage case that offers better protection. Thank you Apple.

All I can say to those deciding to return the thing, stay away from Motorola droids with their recent shift to e-fuses that brick the device if mods are done to firmware. There's an example of a company that doesn't give a hoot. Is there a Motorumor site to go to so I can watch the fireworks?

This might be the most rational and reasonable post i've read on this subject. THANK YOU. I'm starting to go insane with this incessant complaining by everyone about every little issue. Don't like it? Return it. Like it? Great. Think the Droid is better? Awesome, buy it and enjoy the hell out of it!

Why people get so competitive over their effing phones is beyond me. If i wasn't plagued with a personality flaw that compells me to respond to anyone saying something that is powerfully retarded, i'd ignore this crap all together.

For those of you telling me to "just return it" it is not quite that simple for everyone.

I've been trying to return iPhone 4 for the past two weeks, Vodafone refuse to cancel my contract because Apple refuse to admit a fault with the phone.

Don't tell Vodafone it's a problem with the phone. Tell them it's a problem with Vodafone's coverage at your residence.

Would you rather have the case cost you $30 instead? Besides, why wouldn't you want a protective case for this phone? I would buy one in a heartbeat right after I purchased an iphone to protect it in case it dropped.

What? lol

I'm keeping the iPhone, although I have the issue.

Why are you trying to make excuses for Apple? What if I don't want to have a protective case on it? Although I do, because I want to keep it safe.

They have to serve everyone, not just people who treat their phones like it's their babies.

If they put the antenna inside of it or somehow put some layering on the metallic area so the body wouldn't transfer currency, it would definitely work.

I have put 3 phones next to each other, the 3G, 3GS and the iPhone 4. The 4 has this antenna issue, the other two don't, because they use an internal antenna. I also have other 3G phones right next to iP4. They don't have as much problems as the iP4, as far as the telephone issue goes.

I don't care if Apple spent $100 million on their test chamber, they completely overlooked the fact that the body can act as a transmitter. It's kind of surprising because Apple is usually thorough in with research.

There was a question asked about form over function, and the answer did not suffice. Apple definitely looked at form over function.

Asked if he has learned anything from Antennagate, Steve Jobs’ response basically boils down to one thing: haters gonna hate.

” I guess it’s just human nature, when you see someone get successful you just want to tear it down,” said Jobs.

I really don't see the problem here.

Maybe I'm more mature than most on here (which wouldn't be hard being honest), but Steve has demonstrated that other smartphones by other manufacturers have this issue if you grip them in a way that crushes the signal.

This is not unique to the iPhone 4. That's the first thing. That's the facts of the matter. Go ahead and moan, bitch, complain, cry, take a tantrum, stamp your feet, whatever ... hell, return your phone.

The next thing is that people need to accept that this issue isn't affecting every, single user.

Third, this whole thing HAS been blown out of proportion. As Steve said, it's like "X marks the point". The second it was pointed out you could touch it and make something happen, everyone began trying it.

I still don't know anyone who makes calls holding the phone like that. Deep within your palm, the pad of your thumb keeps the phone away from your face. While browsing the web, as a right handed person, I hold the phone in my left hand in the "death grip", so to use my right hand to navigate the device. While about about in a decent area where signal is strong, there's no drop in bars.

Sky News are being positive about this, bloke from Stuff magazine is on saying the iPhone is a superb device, the Sky presenter is trying to make the bars drop LIVE on television, and they won't. And that's inside a studio.

People will no now doubt quote me, attempt to ridicule me, and I hope you have fun venting, I won't be watching ...

WeegieMac has left the building.

finally a sane comment.

I have it

I know how to kill a large number of birds with one stone. Sarah Palin endorsing the iPhone 4G.

ARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!, heart palpitations, strokes, seizures, people throwing themselves from bridges and tall building. Thelma & Louise like scenes of people driving off of cliffs. Steve Jobs entering a Tibetan Monastery.

I would imagine the would affect both Apple Fanboys, and what I call Crab-Apples.

I see a so called Fanboy getting ready to throw himself off of the Golden Gate Bridge, he makes one last call on his iPhone 4G to tell loved ones of Shara Palin ruining his life only to have the called dropped because he has a death grip on his phone, oh the humanity:(

The Crab-Apples would have conniption fit now every time they crabbed about Apple they would see Sarah Palin, and this would enrage them to the point of Apoplexic seizures. They would keel over in their hundreds.

Next Sarah Palin endorses the Blackberry. The House and Senate go into emergency session, rumors have it they are dumping the Blackberry in favor of an Android phone, no wait Google...evil......;):D

Steve already said why, he liked the design so much it had to be that way.

Only place I have not been able to reproduce the problem was in the Milwaukee Mayfair Mall Apple store:(

Ah, the Murphy's Law effect. I see the same thing every time I take my car in to the shop to get that snapping sound looked at. It's never a problem at the shop.

Just because it's free means we have to use it? What if some of us don't like/use cases on our phones, did u ever think of that?

Plus all the blogs that will exaggerate anything for higher page view counts, who cares about anyone's feelings.

Plus all the spoiled children who want a free unicorn, and other stuff that only exists in their imaginations, and go "WAAAAHHH!!!" if they don't get it.

You don't even have it and you're having a discussion about it? lol

You're wondering about this, but for what reason?

What if I get the case and don't want to use it? I have the right to, correct?

I don't get your argument. The bumper is an accessory. It should NOT be needed for the phone to function.

Steve already said why, he liked the design so much it had to be that way.

Well now he will reap the consequences. I don't care about the numbers they presented, it may very well be fake.

Please don't be a fanboy, think logically and with your own mind.

Why wouldn't you like a case on your phone if it protects it from getting destroyed if dropped on the ground? Just seems like stupidity not to have a case on a cell phone. And people wonder why their phone breaks when they drop it.

You says you have to use it? The bare metal problem only affects a fraction of users who are in weak enough coverage areas, and who are too uneducated, inflexible or handicapped to hold the phone differently when required.

I don't get all of the drama queen type responses here.

Why is there an expectation that the iPhone4 have to be perfect or nearly so?

Was it the hyperbole surrounding its release? If you fell for that then I would say what PT Barnum made famous and that there is "a sucker born every minute."

Is it wrong to have higher expectations? No, but to expect perfection is delusional.

Whether you liked SJ's response to all of this or not, at least Apple is trying to do something about it in the short term. The free bumpers may not be the ideal response, but it is at least better than no response at all.

Oh... I see that you just joined the forum... I guess you're just here to bash Apple because you can't afford their products. Sorry. I shouldn't have wasted my time replying.

Wow, what a douchebag post. I notice you've only gone after the newbie who lacked the slavish and pathetically fawning attitude you seem to have honed in your 3 years (WOW!) on this board. HYou've no probs with the fanboy n00bs then? Oh, and you're mega rich too (Double WOW!). You are right about the last bit though, next time don't bother replying...we'll just assume your unquestioning obedience to anything apple.

I expect there will be unannounced changes mid-cycle to address the antenna issue on the iPhone. This happens all the time with the auto sector, appliances sector and electronics sector. Instruction manuals seem to always have some statement saying that their product may change or may not be exactly as illustrated. This allows subtle changes to be made on the product in mid stream.

The report notes that the implied change to Apple's manufacturing process is making its presence known in Apple's U.S. online retail store, where shipping estimates have slipped to three weeks from a 7-10 business day timeframe earlier. MacRumors has also received word that Apple has been delaying some iPhone 4 orders that had been carrying delivery estimates for the next few days, pushing them out to delivery next week while citing "an unexpected delay".

I believe they have already implemented changes in the design. The customers that say they their phone doesnt have the antenna problem will just keep it, others will be happy with the bumper, and the rest will just return it. As the new fixed phones roll out, this issue will fade away. Whatever happens, he sacrifices some of his character today.

Do you drop calls on your iphone often? More than previous phones?

No dropped calls during the 2,173 minutes I have on the iPhone4.

Maybe six or ten dropped calls on the original iPhone that I had from the first day it was out till I got the iPhone4.

Two dropped calls a week on the Razr that I had before the iPhones.

1. A lot of people having the issue didn't call AppleCare, so using that as a measurable is a little deceiving

It's not deceiving, it's the only real data they have to go on. I wonder how many negative posters here have actually called Apple to report their issue. Those who didn't should stop blaming Apple and realize that their complaints are useless if not directed to the company itself. Posting how unhappy you are with the product and that Apple has "lost all integrity" on these forums is completely useless.

LMAO...Love it!!

Freakin hilarious!:D

I love how Jobs says other phones have this same problem. I thought Apple was always ahead of the rest. In fact, I read Jobs gloating about how others copy their software because they were first. If so innovative and groundbreaking, why can you not simply say you made a mistake and recall the product? Instead, you give everyone an unneeded press conference filled with drivel of statistics and a QnA session.

I won't buy an iPhone again after this. I thought Apple was about quality before quantity, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
