Did you catch the fact that Steve Jobs tried to poke fun at the larger smart phones that don't have this problem by calling them Hummers? A couple of interesting facts about that...he started the presentation by stating that all phones have this issue - but then went on to say that some don't have the issue. He further stated that no one would buy one of these large "hummers".

He left out the fact that the DroidX and Evo are sold out...because of high demand! The distortion field is still in effect if he believes his own PR spin. Because while the iP4 is selling like hotcakes...so is the competition. And right now - Android is the fastest growing platform in the smart phone market.

Hummer H2 is my favorite car ever.

I found the solution. :D If you are having reception problems with the iphone, return it and buy one of these instead:

Its pretty simple. If you want to send a message to Apple, then don't buy the phone or return the one you have. Complaining about it on Macrumors fourum does nothing. However, I would would bet that most people that are complaining will keep their phones and just keep going on about whatever the next so called hot issue is.

Why is there an expectation that the iPhone4 have to be perfect or nearly so?

Apple did such a good job on creating a beautiful product that it tricked people into thinking it was a perfect gift from magical unicorns.

It looked so captivating that, unlike the 3GS, 80% of customers didn't buy a case to stick it inside.

Apple should make an uglier version... like say one with a cheap rubber strip around the edges.

Apple priced the bumpers so high that it would look like they're losing soooo much money by giving them away.

Plus all the spoiled children who want a free unicorn, and other stuff that only exists in their imaginations, and go "WAAAAHHH!!!" if they don't get it.

I think people just wanted their phones to work like their 3G/3GS's did - better. You say people want "free" things - really? I just paid £209 for mine on a 24 month contract at £35 per month = £1049 ($1620). Hardly free is it? Anyway, you guys will just swallow Steve's line whatever it is, fact of the matter is the antenna is in the wrong place (or at the very least the join is) and yes, you may get better reception due to the antenna being on the outside but you also get the negatives of it being susceptible to skin contact and all the issues that causes - all phones lose signal when held, but not as bad as the iPhone 4 does.

You says you have to use it? The bare metal problem only affects a fraction of users who are in weak enough coverage areas, and who are too uneducated, inflexible or handicapped to hold the phone differently when required.

None of us is in the same area all the time therefore this problem does affect all of us. "Uneducated"? So, you are saying that it's just fine that a person making a phone call on iPhone 4 that lasts, say, 30 minutes should be educated enough as to be able to monitor how s/he holds the phone all this time instead of concentrating on th e conversation? This does sound revolutionary to me.

still have it

I still have this, i wonder if AT&T would re-activate it for me.

(I know it is only analogue and there is no way they would do it, but it would be fun to try when I bring in my iphone 4 for return)

I might just do that, and video it.

Hummers sold really well for awhile also. Very high demand when first introduced. I remember often driving by a very busy Hummer dealer showroom. It's vacant now. Did you have any GM stock?

Dropped calls vs. Apple Care

Everyone seems to be disputing the Apple Care numbers, but pays no attention to the fact that ATT is only showing less than 1 more call per 100 dropped vs. the 3gs. Not a big deal in my opinion. I get much better reception. I think so people just want something to whine about. It's been said before, if you aren't satisfied with your purchase, return it. If you don't own an iPhone 4 don't comment. If you own droid why do you care?

I don't think anyone's ignoring that, but we're pointing out significant issues with what's being said -

1) The number of people who are calling Applecare is utterly irrelevant. I've not, because there's no point. I know Applecare can't do anything. It's either software or recall, either way it has to get fixed by Apple centrally. Only a tiny fraction of users would call Applecare even if every iPhone 4 was covered in razorblades.

2) The number of returns are irrelevant, given people are waiting for said press conference.

3) The stat on dropping calls, given people will have figured out temporary fixes such as holding the phone in an uncomfortable way or cases or duct tape, is actually very damning indeed.

The way it's presented is not making me feel like Apple values me as a customer. It's making me think they'll make up any old **** that they know is unrepresentative to try and get better headlines.

I don't think the thing has been blown out of proportion at all, and I think Apple's attitude given the call drop numbers that it required such press attention to get them to hold this press conference stinks.

Phazer

Well said! I think this press conference did them more harm than good. I want to love Apple again. I really do, but when they treat their customers like we're idiots, it makes it very dificult to even respect them.

Forgot to add

Do you think the reason they are showing more dropped calls per hundred is because the iPhone 4 is more sensitive and will let you dial out in places the 3gs wouldn't? I could hardly get a call to get out in my apartment with my 3gs, but my iPhone 4 actually gets out, but eventually drops.

This might be the most rational and reasonable post i've read on this subject. THANK YOU. I'm starting to go insane with this incessant complaining by everyone about every little issue. Don't like it? Return it. Like it? Great. Think the Droid is better? Awesome, buy it and enjoy the hell out of it!

Why people get so competitive over their effing phones is beyond me. If i wasn't plagued with a personality flaw that compells me to respond to anyone saying something that is powerfully retarded, i'd ignore this crap all together.
lol, thanks. I don't understand it either but thanks to a stint in a call center (not Apple) I'm used to people venting about things when their expectations aren't met. The last time I noticed though, the v4 doesn't bionically bonded to the user making a return impossible.

Could you imagine the response if Apple incorporated e-fuses the way Motorola has in the Droid X or if firmware updates were only issued when the carriers allowed them depending on the phone hardware version, the way it's happening with androids? It could be worse around here...;)

But since we don't know the number of dropped calls that the 3GS had - the less than one more per hundred is a meaningless statistic. If they had 10 dropped calls per 100 with the 3GS and the increase is less than one - then that is less than a 10% increase in dropped calls - pretty low. However, if they had 1 dropped call per hundred and now they have two - then dropped calls have doubled!!!

It was very convenient for Apple to leave out the baseline metric for this comparison.

I am not sure that this what SJ said. His words: "This is hard data... the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS. Less than one." The corresponding slide also said "per 100 calls" not "per 100 dropped calls". Now, if you think about it, if 3GS drops 1 call out of 100, then it means that iPhone 4 drops twice as much calls. I'd say it's very bad.

None of us is in the same area all the time therefore this problem does affect all of us.
And all other compact cell phones.
"Uneducated"? It's revolutionary. About as revolutionary as making sure you don't hit the "End Call" button when it's in a different place on a new phone.

And if you're clumsy about your hold, you should probably buy a case with a good grip for any shiny glass object.

I was scared I jumped the gun on returning my phone too soon, but I'm glad I did now :).

I've had 4 great years with the iphone, but it's time to look elsewhere I guess.. I don't even know where to look since I have had no desire to switch from an iphone until now.

A very sad day for me :(

I feel your pain...:(

Actually I sold my 3gs for the price of the v4 the night I bought the thing. I've never been able to do that before and as far as I'm concerned the resale value allowed me to get it for free. As far as carrier charges go, that's a condition of owning a smart phone no matter where you go. The only way around that is not to have a phone. They all make you sign contracts while charging you a monthly fee. Since I always put it in a case, to me that was a wash that happened to allow me to avoid the drop. Now that the case is free, well, better still.

I hope you are happy with whatever decision you go with.

If, during the past year or so, all AT&T 3GS users in San Francisco and New York City only had 1 call drop out of 100, many would have thought a miracle occurred.

You might be right as far as me personally. I probably will wind up keeping my iphone even though I am exploring other options. I love the Iphone but not Apple anymore. I think they suck for trying to get over on us. They knew about this but hoped we'd all put the bumpers on our phone and maybe it wouldn't become such a big issue. Ugh... I wish I didn't love it so much even with all its FLAWS because I'd love to bring it back just to turn my back on Apple.

If SJ said that he gave statistics for SF and NY only then this would be relevant. But he did not.

Really! How could it be considered a success if it drops more calls than the previous generation? I'm wondering if this version is going down in Apple's history as its "Vista."

I love how Jobs says other phones have this same problem.
Yeah, that part was lame. There can be two antenna issues (attenuation by obstruction and bridging by conduction). All phones have the first problem, the iPhone 4 included, but the iPhone 4 is unique in also having the second problem. Steve knew that and he knew that issue #2 is what everyone expected them to address, but again they chose to diffuse the issue and refer to problem #1.

The conference wasn't altogether bad, it's good that they're offering free bumpers/cases and it was great that they showed images of their testing facility. That should put to rest the theory put forth by some clowns that "they missed it 'cos they only tested it with fake 3GS cases on!". I have no doubt that they take these issues and their reputation seriously. But we really could've done without the "look, other phones do it too!" part, he knows that we know that he knows that there's more to it than that.

BTW I'm with my old 3G here with the 4.0.1 update installed and I still can't make it go down even to 4 bars. I've tried one-hand death grip, two-hand death grip and two-hand death grip squeezed between my legs. Still 5 bars. If I had a pair of iron gloves I'd try that too, but...
