How do you manage all those devices if you only own a single cable? You must spend all your time plugging and unplugging things. Do you get up in the middle of the night to switch that one cable to the next device?
He says he wants a single cable but I don’t believe it. Maybe if the Lightning Cable identifies as a USB-C, it might make him happy.

Their e-waste and environmental issues argument to keep Lightning is just so bad. Maybe if they've switched years ago to USB-C, we wouldn't have all the e-waste that is going to happen right now, now that everyone will migrate to this 'new' connector.

Also, we didn't learn anything new from this interview, so, what a waste of time, unfortunately.

This is one of those few times you can genuinely say Steve Jobs would not act like this. His interviews give real substance and thought.

Joswiak answers were just smartass ones with no substance.
I actually don’t think Jobs would even do an interview like this. Jobs rarely did interviews at all. His best interviews were the All Things D interviews and those were with someone he had a great relationship with. That helps the foundation of the conversation.

I also think that Joswiak was fine. The answer to the Lightning cable was pretty balanced. People seem to forget that Lightning pre-dates USB-C and that Apple was its biggest proponent, even going so far as making it the only port on the MBP.

I just think Joanna was asking questions that were never going to get answered and kept pressing. Like - Apple is never going to talk about a headset or car, and she kept pressing. She could have asked other questions.

But does this mean everybody will get USB C, or will Apple only give it to regions that require it?
Who’s to say? 😛
The reasoning for not having a calculator seems simple enough. Unless one really wants a giant 8"x10" full screen calculator with giant buttons. Might be nice for sight-impaired people, though.

I'd expect a calculator when/if iPad goes windowed like a Mac. Not something I'd want, though.

Long ago I wrote an RPN calculator app for the Mac. I kept it as small as possible to not hog the screen and stay out of the way.
Their current Calculator is simply incompatible with the state of multitasking on iPad. Its inelegance would become readily apparent with a Split View or Slide Over or full-screen app that takes up the full height or entirety of your screen for no good reason.

IMO, a calculator app should be easily accessible but also unobtrusive. On iPhone my shortcut lives in the Control Center but it still takes up the full screen when I open it. That’s tolerable on a phone but not on a tablet.

Picture in Picture shows how they could make a simple calculator always available with a tab on the side of the screen and a floating window that can be moved and resized within some limits. They could start there if they insist on not allowing free-floating windowed apps yet.

Or you just stop asking and complaining and accept that they offer what they offer. 💁
It's now 7:3 for people who feel entitled to an iPad calculator app, despite Apple never announced one. Keep voting!

[UPDATE] 9:4 the entitlement is strong!

Spot on. Here's pCalc running on my iPad Pro. Looks silly. Apple's would look no better.

Apple knows what they're doing not offering an iPad calculator yet.

I think the whole interview was a little bit of a dud.

The humour wasn't the best and jokes didn't land, mostly due to Stern's interviewing style. Her light-hearted manner and whimsy allowed Craig and Joe to reply with half-hearted answers, mostly giving replies that had zero-substance – and Joanna's personality allowed that.

What a dud.

Yeah, absolutely. What an arrogant answer. It's so ridiculous they won't just release their own calc app and be done with it. And we all know once they do eventually, they'll sell it as the best thing ever.

How about supporting developers?

Apple gets complaints about their 30%/15% cut but some of you want them to make a new default app directly competing with developers.

That image reminds me of those big button landline phones from the 80s/90s.

Apple will only make a calculator for an iPad when the iPad supports multiple resizable floating apps, like a Mac.

"I guess they can’t figure out how to design a decent calculator for the iPad?"

Apple surely can, but like I sad above, that will only happen when iPad gets a macOS-like operating system.

Nobody wants a giant 8"x10" full screen iPad calculator. Unless you're visually impaired

Obviously a bunch of people here want Apple to make a native iPad app *now* and I’ve heard this complaint for a long time. Quit acting like what you want is what other people want

Calm down.

It has nothing to do with what I want or don't want. It's about Apple not designing an ugly/clunky calculator for iPad that takes up the whole screen.

If you feel strongly about it, please give TC a call and tell him you demand Apple make one. And stomp your feet and pout if you have to.

Lightning vs USB-C. I am so happy the EU stepped in. We are all victims here, not sure of what, but victims nevertheless

I want a iPhone that can scan any room that I am in(with the phone in hand), show the measurements of everything in said room, give the temperature of the room, determine if there are any leaks, bug infestations, harmful particulates, harmful gases, and report back. Also if there are people in the room identify them via their Apple/Google account ID nickname, avatar and personal description
.
If I were still dating, I would want it to show compatibility. From very compatible to stay the ... away

So what plan does Tim choose:

Plan A - Do what the EU wants and make the complete switch to USB-C with the iPhone.

Plan B - Be brave and go wireless, showing the EU that Apple can follow its own script.

Plan C - Switch temporarily to USB-C and later go wireless, perhaps as soon as the iPhone 16 or 17.
How is the ruling exactly worded that:

Wireless only or Wireless + USB - C = good
Wireless + Lightning = bad

You just keep repeating yourself do you not understand that a calculator can have more than basic buttons and a numeric display? Yes my example was ugly guess what Apple could make it awesome and pretty. It could combine all features of all calculators (Basic, Scientific, Graphing, Printing and Financial).

Also as stated in the article, they flat out say if you want one go buy one of the many on the App Store. Hmmmm how odd that there is market for something you have deemed useless.

Also at what point do you deem it ridiculous? iPhone Max sizes are pretty big maybe they shouldn't have a calculator. iPad Mini is about the size of a TI-92 Calculator which has tiny buttons. So where is the line?

It's almost like it should be the choice of the user.

Edit: At this point Apple will never be able to provide the feature without a lawsuit. https://education.ti.com/en/products/ipad-apps/ti-nspire-app-for-ipad (Doesn't look ridiculous to me at all)

Thats not odd. There's millions of apps in the App Store that Apple doesn't make its own version of.

Jeeeeez...Again, once more...that's not something APPLE wants to make, as long as iPad does not support a Mac-like user experience.

If an iPad owner is OK with a giant full-screen calculator, no worries. Simply get one from the App Store and find happiness. I suspect there are many.

Wrong again. I have not deemed it useless. As shown up above with a photo, I have pCalc on my iPad and occasionally use it, as clunky as it is measuring 8"x10".

Again, this is APPLE'S DECISION, not mine. I'm simply explaining the reasoning.

Do you think the Texas Instruments one is Clunky? Apple could easily make something elegant. Lack of imagination to think otherwise.

Sure, Apple could. But that's a horrible design. Why waste time developing an app Apple believes will result in low demand. Especially if Apple will be moving to a Mac-like resizable window OS in the near future.

Need a calculator app for your iPad today? Simply go to the App Store and pick one of many available.

Easy.

Could these guys be any less genuine?

Notice how they try to run out the clock to avoid ever answering anything? I honestly think an interview like this reflects more poorly on them and Apple than honest answers would.
I wish more companies would take after Sigma when it comes to open dialogue with their customers. To me, that makes Sigma seem confident and relaxed.

Apple has always been very pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
