Not sure why anyone would choose this frankenmachine over the new MBA.

The iPad's OS is a complete nightmare for anything more than basic content consumption. I bought a 2017 iPP for my kids to play with (my first iPad since the 4) and I can't believe how clunky and counter-intuitive it's become. The number of times I can't get the sound from a streaming app to stop even when I close every app is horrible. I hate hate hate the way when I try and close a full stream video it does that picture in picture thing. Every gesture is clunky and non-obvious.

In a world where the MBA exists, and people need a keyboard and trackpad, this *more expensive* product is a bad joke.

If anyone figures out how to program my mouse forward/back buttons to go forward/back in Safari or go back a menu in other apps, please let me know! I don't see forward/back as options in the Button Customization list in Settings, hopefully they're coming in a later release.

Let’s give them some credit for the design - there’s been a lot of speculation about how they’d overcome the challenges and issues with other keyboards and other products. But they’ve come up with something which is innovative - the adjustability without resorting to a kick stand is one. It’s got backlighting too.

But the price?? And no function keys?

As others have said, by the time you buy a Pro and this keyboard, it’s MacBook money. I think there’s a lot of positives for iOS over macOS (assuming the apps you need are there), but its pretty expensive.

You get two computers in one as you can just detach the keyboard, but if you’ve gone for the larger iPad, it’s not as comfortable to use around the house as the smaller ones. So maybe a laptop and a big standard iPad is a better combo?

Wow, not simply using the existing pc/mac mouse framework. Apple is taking this as an opportunity to review the "mouse" on the iPad altogether. While there are decades-old entrenched expectations on a laptop, the iPad is not going to be staunchly guarded by that legacy and will allow a breath of fresh air into the stale mouse pit.

...and of course, the video refuses to play on my iPhone SE with iOS 12. Apple's game, Apple's rules...

I think the cursor support is awesome but this magic keyboard comes with some big tradeoffs. First of all it only open 130 degrees so you can't fold the keyboard completely around and use the iPad in tablet mode on your lap - you will need to physically detach from keyboard. With the current keyboard you can do that (yes the keys are exposed on your lap/hand but it is still doable). I also often flip the keyboard all the way around prop on my desk like this "/\"to watch video when I don't want the keyboard - can't do that with this one and if you detach you can't prop.

It's one of the main reasons I still love the 2017 10.5" iPad Pro: the origami style Smart Keyboard. It might have had its flaws, but it was an great, versatile design, and since then Apple's designers have been doggedly "fixing" what wasn't broken.

I like it, but the price is nuts. Especially during an economic meltdown. Maybe a few people will buy this. As for me, I'm going to install the GM on it tonight and use a spare Magic Mouse. Maybe I will get this at some point, especially because I want it to do well because I like what it is and the unique mouse integration with a touch-based OS, but dang. We're stockpiling and saving now Tim. It's just a keyboard with trackpad.

I'm also interested to see if you can even use this thing in your lap very well with the weird floating design. Sure, it looks cool, but is this yet another example of form over function at Apple? I thought we were putting those days behind us.

I also want to know if I could use this across my house with Sidekick, although my BT connection to my iMac downstairs is usually decent. Wish there was a way to initiate sidekick from the iPad when it exits. Right now I just bring my keyboard with mouse upstairs and attach it to my 2018 iPad Pro 13" mirrored so that I can do some work in a place with windows that I can see outside and get some fresh air. I really need to buy a MBP at some point but yeah, economic meltdown for the ages. RIP my funds and my wife's business. At least my stay at home job can keep us afloat for a while until it ripples out to my company in a few months, hopefully longer.

It was nice to see some normalcy again today with Apple releasing things but this video does seem a bit rushed and less polished with the presentation and the editing. Cuts feel jumpy. It feels like Craig is giving his already memorized stage presentation in a different format. I think they were probably planning to hold at least an event with some Apple employees on campus, perhaps spread out with seats between, but with the strict limits put on things now it just didn't work out. Nothing is normal now. I wonder if they put off the iPhone SE so they can make a bigger splash with it later? But right now people do need cheaper phone options. Just because you're not getting paid doesn't mean you don't need to buy a new phone if your phone breaks. Guess there are refurbished models for cheap to get by on.

Rather than an arrow and a little gloved hand, the circle metamorphoses itself into the required shape for the action. It doesn’t just change shape, you can see the little circle becoming a character cursor or a focus selection.
I'm very impressed with this implementation. It might remove the abstractness of having the click on a window to activate it. I.e., click on Messages to select Messages and use it, then click back on a Safari window to select Safari and use it. The last thing we want is iPad to replicate a 35 year old GUI.

The circle changing shape over buttons - does it remind you of something? It resembles when you focus on apps/channels on Apple TV to me.

Can you fold it over?
I don't know about that. They're really demoing using the iPad alone by pulling it off the cover while its open which seems cool enough.

But I think you would be able to bend the upper hinge backwards and close the lower hinge normally so the iPad lies with its screen facing you above the keyboard. Fingers crossed! :)

No you can’t fold it over and use like a tablet - that is why in the promo videos they always show it being detached from keyboard to be used as a tablet.

Seems weird that you can’t, but I guess there is no perfect solution. Folding it over now with the keys on the back isnt ideal but I got used to it.

That could be cool but You would think that would of been in a demo by now.

That’s 180 degrees - they say it moves only 130 degrees

Not sure how the floating keyboard stand charges the iPad. Does it have wireless charging now? That would be huge for those of us who use iPads for Kiosks. We could then just have a wireless charging mount in the back with no wires, just a clean sheet of glass kiosk. I will buy a lot of these, if that's possible.
no. there is usbc port on the hinge and the stand charges and connects via the smart connector. I really don't know where you got the idea that the iPad will wirelessly charge on the stand. a little logical thinking goes a long way

So its looking more like a docking station that doubles as a carrying case? Hope Im wrong...
you can adjust the hight, its not just a docking station or a case, its main function is iPad input support.
