The crease isn’t the issue.

It’s the soft plastic screen that is going to get wrecked by your finger nail or small bits of dust/debris.

Sorry but I ain’t paying even more money for a phone that is going to be ruined so easily. But hey at least you can just buy AppleCare…

I’ll stick to boring old iPhones with solid glass that I can put a glass screen protector on.
the crese IS the issue
the subpar plastic screen is ALSO the issue

I definitely agree here and this is my only worry. I take pretty good care of my phones but I think what this leads too is an iPhone that doesn't hold its value like the others do. I always sell my phone to Apple for the next phone so that's a concern for sure. But I'm still buying it. I want a tablet in my pocket :D

Wait, this is basically going to be a Samsung parts phone when it comes to the display correct? If the Samsung foldables still have a crease how will this phone not have one? Samsung giving their best stuff to Apple?

The core of the inner display on any flagship foldable is not plastic, it is ultra-thin glass. The plastic on the inner display you would be feeling out of the box is a screen protector they put on them, and I remove that on day one, on every Z Fold, Flip, and Pixel Fold I have owned. I prefer the feel the inner display without the plastic screen protector on it.
I know that’s the case, but both Google and Samsung firmly state that you shouldn't remove the plastic film as the inner display is not designed to be used without one due to being too soft and fragile.

Samsung will make it based on Apple's specifications.

From the article:

Apple is using an inner screen designed by Samsung, but the panel structure, lamination method, and material process was designed by Apple.

Yes, that is true. This is for liability reasons anymore. I've removed the inner display screen protector on my Z Fold 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and my Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and I've never had an issue. I've never even had so much as a hairline scratch on any of those inner displays. However, unlike the Z Fold's I've mentioned, you couldn't remove the screen protector on the inner display without damaging it the original Samsung Fold, due to the type of adhesive they used at that time.

What a pointless product. This foldable fad will disappear before long, its fate to be shared with that of the Plus, Air, and Mini.

Over and under of this will cost $3k?
My bet is under, I’m gonna say $1999-$2199. They have to make it look like they’re at least attempting to compete with where the rest of the foldable market is, and this is already more than a Pro Max and iPad Mini which is the combo this could replace

I use my z fold throughout the day like a normal slab phone.

At night I open it up and use it like a tablet to read.

All I'm missing is iOS, Android has some big limitations for me.
Exactly. People seem to be really hung up on the scratchable screen, but that screen is protected when folded, which is like 90% of the time when I’m out and about, in my case

You just have to be cognizant of the fact that it’s less durable and take care of it (which people should be doing with any $2k device anyway, really)

I have a Pixel Fold for work and while it is a little heavy in the hand, it is great for productivity. The job system that I use has an app that looks great on the inner display. I am really excited for Apple to release this.

Each half of the device is thinner than a current phone... might be cause to deploy periscope optics if the sensor is smaller than the thickness of one side.

Would be unsurprised if the rumours about it featuring TouchID were because the FaceID sensor is only inside the device, so TouchId allows ApplePay without opening the clamshell.

I think it will be a great hardware product. I think the problem will be more on the software. Because requiring native apps for Fold will be an instant failure (at the expected price point would make effort from devs not worth it), and adapting to the current jungle of Universal, only iPhone and only iPad apps and 2 modes of visualising will be really challenging.

Yeah, me too, at least while they’re still a thing. If foldables reach more popularity than regular smartphones, that day, maybe this old slabs of glass become a niche, same way it happened with smaller sized iPhones… Who thought that some day our thumb wouldn’t reach more than half the screen height?

Apple is making progress on the development of the book-style foldable iPhone expected in 2026, according to a report from Chinese site UDN. The device has reportedly entered the engineering validation stage, and Apple is gearing up for mass production.

Citing supply chain sources, UDN says that Apple has solved "the crease problem" that has plagued most foldable smartphones, and the foldable iPhone will be the first crease-free foldable smartphone on the market. We've heard multiple prior rumors about Apple's intensive work on the hinge and display to minimize creasing, so this isn't the first time the foldable iPhone has been rumored to have a seamless screen.

Apple is using an inner screen designed by Samsung, but the panel structure, lamination method, and material process was designed by Apple. Apple worked with its suppliers to come up with a hinge design that prevents a permanent crease, and the hinge will adopt Liquid Metal components. By using Liquid Metal, Apple was able to design an iPhone that has a durable hinge that still has a slim design.

Apple will allegedly call the device the "iPhone Fold," which is the name sites have already adopted when sharing rumors about the product.

There have been rumors suggesting that Apple could delay the foldable iPhone beyond 2026, but if Apple is ready for the engineering validation stage of iPhone development, a September 2026 launch timeline as planned is entirely plausible.

Well if it really doesn’t have a crease, my wife would certainly try it given here poor eyesight.

It will be very interesting to look back at this thread in a couple of years and see how many of the “I don’t need a foldable phone and can’t ever see myself having one because they are stupid” people end up getting them and won’t stop talking about how awesome they are and how amazing and original Apple is for coming out with it. 😂

None of these threads ever age particularly well.

I use mine open 80% of the time since I'm in office environment, I don't ever baby my phones but take care of them equally. Insurance always on my foldables.

I wouldn’t necessarily call it a stupid product. Unless it fails to achieve the sales Apple is hoping for which seems to be the case with the iPhone Air. Then it would’ve been a stupid decision for Apple to green light the development of the phone and waste valuable resources on it.
