Anyhow all the pointless fighting aside, I think weight differences are not that big of an issue unless you literally need to carry your laptop everyday in designer womens bag (my wife had that requirement, her entire bag with Air is around 4.5 lbs). I'm planning on carrying my new 17 incher to work everyday, but guess what - I already carry about 12 lbs everyday with my current Macbook so making it 16 lbs wouldn't make much of a difference for me. It's still going under the subway seat for most of the journey. I'd much rather be interested to see how nice it sits on my lap when I hold it - curves and thickness make a huge difference during prolonged periods of time.

But my point was that with "lighter configured" Dell you are getting configuration that is similar to Macbook Air and that's what you should be comparing it to.

I don't see any reasonable way to consider that an E6400 is
comparable to a MacBook Air.

The only similarity is that the configs don't have an optical
drive.

You'd need to add the following to the MBA to make the comparison
reasonable:
  • Core 2 Duo P8700 (2.53 GHz, optional 3.06 GHz T9900)
  • Support for 8 GiB of RAM
  • A drive bay for an internal optical drive
  • An eSATA port
  • 3 more USB ports (the eSATA port is eSATA/USB)
  • An SDHC card reader
  • A microphone port
  • An Expresscard slot
  • A Gigabit Ethernet port
  • A smartcard reader
  • A VGA output (in addition to the DisplayPort on both)
  • A docking port connector
  • Optional external battery pack
  • Optional internal 3G with GPS
  • Optional fingerprint reader
  • Optional Nvidia Quadro discrete graphics

There's really not much similarity with the MacBook Air....

Hi - an ultra-newbie here - I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new Macbook Pros, but I'm not interested in any graphics-related improvements - I don't game or edit video - I just need it for audio programmes. So, I was kind of hoping that the new MBPs would reduce the price of the existing ones, allowing me to get one of those slightly cheaper. BUT one of the earlier posts here mentioned a reseller offering a very limited period of discount (I think til 28th Feb) - after which/once the new ones are out, will the older/current ones even be available to buy from Apple, does anyone know?

If the budget's tight, go used. Even models from 2-3 years ago have plenty of oomph for audio applications. Kinda like the one I'll be selling when the new ones come out... :)

Have a look at refurbished MBP's for sale through the online Apple Store. Sometimes there are some really good discounts to be had. These come with the standard 1-year Apple warranty and you can purchase AppleCare for extra peace of mind.

Best Buy Silver Member

So here is a question:

If I become a best buy silver member because I bought a 17in MBP model it says I get a 45 day return policy and no restock fee does that really work?

Thanks philbeeney - it does seem a sensible way forward. By mid/the end of
April I should have the finances in place to get *something*, and also by then it'll be imperative that I *have* it, so time-wise, everything will fall into place, I'm sure...

You're right. You can't. The Dell appears to be a clunky, blocky POS. Keep trying though, it's amusing. By all means, keep trying to prove "quality" by spitting out technical specifications.

Yes it does work. But keep it mind that it is 15% of the purchase price restock fee, and it takes a bit for the silver membership to kick in, its not instant. That is at least a $300 hit. I'm just sayin.I too just bought an MBP, 15" 2.66 and I'm loving it. Helps that it was open box though. And as for the guy asking about the current model dropping in price when the new one hits, they most certainly will. When it happens, try to talk to your salesperson, and haggle a little. No store likes to keep old merchandise on hand. The Apple store is also a good source, some killer deals on the refurbs if you are quick enough.

Style is subjective, for example this review of the XT2 (same
design as the E-series):

Go on, grab the Dell Latitude XT2 - it just feels good.
The rugged metal-alloy casing gives it a solid, substantial frame.

Pick it up, and the 13.3in Dell Latitude XT2 is deceptively
light
(1.64kg). Put all of that together, and you seem to have
a premium choice for mobility-minded businessfolk in need of
a tablet PC.

It has style in spades and a host of great features.

And on the other hand:

But while they may be great machines on the inside, their
exteriors are a little…samey.

To remedy their somewhat boring facades, these Macbook owners
have decided to put their creativity to work creating fabulous laptop
art that incorporates the Apple logo into a clever design.

That's a strange reading of the post - I didn't claim quality,
but instead listed features to show how it wasn't reasonable to
compare an E6400 with an MBA. Other than the fact that you can
remove the optical from the E6400, it really does not match an MBA.

I just wanted to weigh in and say that while i've been following this ongoing saga for weeks and weeks now, i finally pulled the trigger last night and bought a refurb MBP from the apple store online (15.4", 2.53/4/250).

I've needed a new computer since like, fall, and have had a gift card for a couple hundred bucks since christmas that family got me.. I could have patiently waited for something bigger and better, but i could not risk having any projects of mine (beginning grad school soon) get corrupted or lost or otherwise messed up while i waited. I believe the MBP i'm getting in just a few days will meet and likely exceed my needs -- in addition to working as a writer, both regular and freelance, and doing some occasional DJ-ing, i'm thinking of a final project that would incorporate making a short documentary, but i'll worry about that when i get to that point in six or so months.

Thanks to everyone who has written on here that if you need a computer now and the ones available now meet your needs, then get it now - at least now i can actually worry about other things. I bought it at what i think was a good price ($1500) but it kills me to pay more than $100 in tax (the joys of living in chicago proper). But i can't wait to get it now -- so what if it's 'ancient'? I'll have an awesome new computer and others will still be logging on every tuesday (wednesday, thursday, friday) looking for that elusive upgrade.

By all means, keep trying to prove "quality" by spitting out technical specifications.

Is this the quality that makes chunks of plastic fall of Macbooks, the viewing angle on the UBMB be the worst I've EVER seen, the awesome unique fun of the 27" imac, or the quality of three PSU's that have all failed, I'm not sure which quality you mean.

the viewing angle on the UBMB be the worst I've EVER seen

I can view my "ancient" 3,1 from any angle I ever use.

I think viewing angle is one of those "specs" that makes zero difference to anyone in real life but gives something for the spec whores to get worked up about. I can't think of a scenario for a notebook where the difference between 170 and 175 degree viewing angle would ever make a shred of difference.

keep trying to prove "quality" by spitting out technical specifications.

Can't prove quality by slapping an aluminum body on it and pricing it $1000 over it's nearest competitors either.

It's not quality just b/c it has the apple logo on it. Jaundiced screens, Bad video cards, exploding batteries, the iPad. . . I'd say Quality control is at an all-time low for Apple ;)

Vs Dell, who is a company I DO NOT LIKE [for their practice of drastically overcharging for upgrades]

That aside, I am supplied one by my company for my job. It has a gold warranty, which means I get people on the phone that speak American English, and on-site repair. It's also one of the most well put together machines I've ever used. no chassis flex, parts are all in correct alignment with no excess gaps. To steal a phrase. "it just works".

So let's be clear here. What you are really trying to say is "I am an Apple Fanboy. It is not quality if it is not Apple because Apple is all that I like".

I'm not criticizing. I'm not hanging around on these boards because I DISLIKE apple. With Apple though, the only difference between it and a PC these days is the operating system. I hate to break this to you, but how well the operating system performs is 100% dependent on the hardware driving it. If I could put OS X on any machine you can bet I would have no problem whatsoever buying a competitor's more technologically equipped machine for that very reason. Doubly so if I can get twice the performance for half the cost.

I have a feeling a lot of the "waiting for Arrandale" crowd understands what I'm saying. After all, if it wasn't about the technology and "performance per dollar". . ..why would any of them be waiting? ;)

Its not ignorance. Dells are ****. I've owned enough to know. You can have all the bleeding-edge hardware you want, and it will look great on paper, but **** is ****, no matter how it's polished or spun up. I'm guessing you own a Latitude, otherwise you wouldn't be getting butt-hurt over a comment. So, to that, all I can say is...

Sorry. :(

I owned a Dell Inspiron 5160. Not top of the line and was not loaded with extras. This computer was great and lasted over five years with only a little lag towards the very end. I used it for CAD drafting and all the other typical things. I would have to say that not all Dell's are S#@T. I would say that Dells are not top of the line but then again 90% of people don't need the top of the line. Like the other guy said pull your head out of the sand. Mac's are nice but there are a lot of people that are treated very well by a Dell laptop.

This wait is getting wild..... suicide is imminent. Apple, you're years ahead and months behind....at the same time ;)

But, comparing pc companies is really simple. Everyone (for the most part), gets their parts from the same factories. Apple makes many of their parts, as well as Sony and of course Asus. But other than that, they get their parts from the same factories. To say 'Dell suck.', is not really accurate. The XPS' is awesome computers, and even the new Inspirons with i5's are very nice.

And what kind of build/ship time did the site quote you when you placed the order???

I placed the order on the 12th of Feb. originally I was supposed to have it by the 22nd, on the 23rd I received an email that it would be delayed and wouldn't ship until 3/2 but Apple said it still could ship anytime before that and to keep checking.

I logged in on Friday to see if it shipped and then the big red message was at the top saying to call... I called and that's when she told me about it being delayed further because of product transition..

But the original order was placed on the 12th or so, Apple had it as of Feb 16th..

You're not the first person to have a delay in shipping. Here's hoping for Tuesday! :D

RAM or HDD Space

Still playing around while I wait for the refresh like all of you. Looking for a little help. Is it better to have 2GB or RAM with a 500gb HDD or 4GB RAM and a 320GB HDD. It is the same price. I think the RAM would be easier to update to a higher amount down the road. thanks for any input.

I've seen this several times when waiting for the latest and greatest product from Apple. Orders will be put on hold and customers will be notified. Yet on the Apple store it shows a shipping time of 24 hours or 1-3 days. I'd say the odds of it happening this Tuesday are very, very good.

Congrats to everyone who has waited this long. Looks like our wishes are finally going to be answered. I'd love to get a 15" with a higher res screen. I've bounced around from 15" to 12" to 17" to 15" and currently running on a 13" MBP. If Apple bumps the res on the 15" I will go with that. Otherwise I'll probably be going back to a 17" with a 1920x1200 panel for the screen real estate. I vowed I would never buy a 17" again because of the less than stellar resale value but I'm having a change of heart; it's such a beautiful piece of art.
