I've never considered having a 3G iPad, I have an iphone that I tether to so why have two data plans?
And Afterall, it's once in a blue moon that I'm not on wifi as I don't live in 1985 :D

I have a MiFi which is perfect for mobile internet. I don't think I will ever need a 3G iPad as the MiFi is more flexible as I can use it my MBP etc.

If money is not the problem, having 3G is always desirable. There will be additional GPS services that are available and if you are never in the field or even vacation, 3G can come in mighty handy. It only takes a few minutes to activte the 3G radio for a month.

It has saved the day for me numerous occasions.

I have the GPS service available on my phone - I imagine most people who own an iPad would also have a GPS enabled phone.

As others above, I'm fine with wifi only. I, too, have an iPhone for out of the house use. And if I ever get to take a vacation again (haven't had a full week off in about 8-9 years) and I traveled, I would just have the wifi hotspot activated on my iPhone ($20/month)

Mine is wifi only and I haven't had a moment of regret. Recently my employer provided me with a 4g wifi hotspot device which I've used a couple of times.

Sorry but I can still "imagine" where the 3G would be desirable to most if there were no difference in price.

That is what it really is, it is about money. To some it matters more than others.

No regrets on getting the wifi only iPad2. We really don't need it since the iPad doesn't go out of the house. I guess the only feature that I'd like to have would be the GPS, but it's not that big of a deal since we really don't take it out ... I suppose that if we did have GPS, we might take it out to use on road trips.

I will say, the only thing that I do regret is getting the 32GB. For us, we should have saved the $100 and gotten the 16GB. We're not even close to using up the flash memory.

I have never been in a situation that I needed 3G. First of all in my area I have a lot of either free or paid WiFi hotspots that I'm never far away from.

Secondly I have my iPhone which I can use anywhere, so I'm covered either way.

Thirdly I always try to think ahead when leaving my home or office so I make sure to download any docs I might need.

I agree that if they were the same price then most people would get the one with the most features and that ultimately the choice of device is limited by available cash. However, I still disagree that people would want a 3G device just for GPS services which are available on most modern phones.

I have access to WiFi at work and at home an on the road I tether using my Nokia Smartphone.

There is no way on earth that I would pay for another subscription or plan, especially when the data is capped. I have unlimited data which also includes tethering. I could download the entire internet if I wanted too and I wouldn't be charged an extra penny.

:D

You do not take your iPad on Vacation? I would never leave for any time without taking the laptop and iPad. 3G saved my sanity while out and about for a week.

The iPhone could not replace my iPad for doing the Internet for more than a few minutes. Not mention my use for work in the field. I cringe just thinking of using my iPhone 4S instead on my iPad. Just some serious email demands would be very hard on the iPhone after getting used to the iPad.

I never said that it was JUST for GPS services, just an added bonus.

No need is an argument here. If you can afford 3G and want it, GET IT.

If you can't afford or do not want to spend the extra money, pass it up!:p

Never even considered a 3G iPad because I already had a 4G/LTE mobile hotspot that I use with my laptop (and more recently a Kindle Fire.)

The absence of GPS wasn't a problem for me since my Android smartphone already has superior GPS functionality. But even if that were not the case a bluetooth GPS receiver for the iPad would be a better solution (imo).

BTW, unlike some others here I've found that I use the 4G access fairly frequently, even when a wifi network is available. I travel frequently and have often found that the "free wifi" offered in many hotels is worth exactly what I pay for it, i.e. a connection no better than EDGE and a hotel staff who can't spell wifi.

Furthermore, I don't use public networks for some internet activities (e.g. online banking) regardless of how good the signal is. Such networks often lack even basic security measures and I'd rather not have my bank account information readily available to the guy sitting at the next table.

Interestingly, when we got our original iPad it was wifi only. Plenty of times we wished it had 3G. When we got an iPad 2, it had to be 3G and I use it all the time. My wife kept the original and is jealous, even though we have iPhones and can tether. We often take the ipads with us when travelling or the other day when I was buying a car it really came in handy. So when the next iPad comes out I'll get a 3G and give her the iPad 2 (she is not as concerned with updated graphics, etc) and we'll keep the original at home.

In that case I'll go back to playing GTA on the iPad as there is nothing more to discuss! :p

I know variations of this question have been asked frequently around here, so I might as well just ask my specific question...

Have you ever regretted not adding the 3g when purchasing your iPad?

Since purchasing your iPad, how many times have you desperately needed 3g and not had it? Thanks.

I jailbroke my 4s paid 20 bucks for the tethering app and because I don't stream movies to my iPad I haven't gotten any nasty grams from AT$T about it so I'm ok. And when the next iphone is released I'll get that one and patiently wait for that jailbreak and look for wifi hotspots, luckily with my job most of the places I go have wifi and because my company installed it I have access to it.

There were a handful of times I needed 3g connectivity for work stuff, and as I have a mifi I was able to use it. If you use your ipad for work and there are times you MUST be able to connect to your work servers I suggest you have some method to get online in a pinch. You can't always count on having a wireless signal. If you just use it for pleasure I'd think the wifi only version would be fine, especially if you have a email enabled smartphone with internet.

I can't say I've regretted not getting the 3G as much as I have regretted only getting a 16GB. These apps are so huge and they are getting bigger. I realize now that a 16GB iPad is as USEFUL TO ME as having a 8GB ipod.

I will say IF the iPad 3 has a 4G option I will buy that JUST for the speed as sometimes tethering off my iPhone 4S is not the greatest online experience. If 4G is not there then I'll get another Wifi only and get the biggest memory option Apple has to offer.

For those of you who are on the fence who do own a iPhone...probably better to tether off the phone when you don't have access to wifi. Even when you do I do find tethering better than say using the local starbucks wifi. Helps at resale too from what ive noticed.

i'd check into your carrier's policies, because you'll probably need to pay a hefty fee to take advantage of tethering. at least, that's what my carrier does.

Every where I use my iPad has WiFi. Plus 3G feels ancient after using wifi that I really wouldn't want to use it. my iPhone is only on 3G in the car, maybe with 4GLTE it may be worth it. Until then WiFi iPad is fine for me.
