Arrow! I'm actually surprised that something like Arrow ended up on CW. It looks like it could be on ABC or FOX.

Agreed. Arrow is the only program I watch on the CW, but I seldom get to see it due to personal scheduling conflicts. This will save me from having to wait for it to come out on blu-ray This will be great!

I've never had any interest in Ballet but Breaking Pointe was a pretty interesting and amazing. It's incredible what these dancers can do and how hard they train. Looking forward to Season 2.

Make that NO advertising. Tell me the ad-free price or I won't use it.

Life is finite. I've been dead already. Don't waste my remaining time with ads.

well that makes no sense ... if you r happy to pay just use the itunes store ...

C'mon Apple BBC iPlayer for :apple:TV please!

It does seem odd that Apple have neglected the potential of the UK market.

Currently there are various free-to-view initiatives like 'Youview' and other free on demand/broadband based tv players.

I don't see any reason why BBC, ITV, CH4 and Five shouldn't have their standard catchup/player apps on Apple TV. They're available on pretty much every single other platform. I'd probably use the Apple TV a lot more if it could function like this.

I doubt we'll see a Sky Go app on apple tv (UK satellite TV) but one can hope...

AppleTV sucks, especially outside the USA. iPlayer, 4od, Lovefilm, ITV services can be found on any number of junky products. Why not Apple's?

I suspect it's because Apple wants a cut of the revenue from these services. Netflix, for example, is on AppleTV only because a subscription can be paid for via iTunes. Apple get their cut and the user has only one account to worry about. I don't foresee a free-for-all type situation developing on AppleTV, not like it did on the iOS App Store.

Agreed. I don't think Sky will allow users to sign up via iTunes. Can't see Apple offering services that won't allow this. Why would they?

iPlayer in the UK on the other hand should be possible, maybe Apple want the BBC to offer iPlayer internationally with subscriptions via iTunes and are withholding the UK version as leverage.

You realise that CW is a joint-owned venture between CBS and Warner Brothers, right? I'm pretty sure having a working relationship between two of the biggest media names is a good thing (not to mention the fact that CW is popular in the teens and 18-35 market).

You forgot to mention it's a broadcast network. An admittedly thin distinction these days.

The same requirement with Netflix on the xBox. Why the heck would I need an xBox Live Gold membership to watch it? It's not streaming from Microsoft!

True. On the AppleTV, Netflix allow Apple to sign-up users via iTunes and I assume Apple takes a cut of the fees. This doesn't cost the user any more than a regular subscription and no separate accounts required. Everyone wins!

That was rather confusing. For nearly everything on network television, iTunes has them up within 48 hours of broadcast, with no ads. Could it be sooner and cheaper, maybe.

The average show on a US broadcast network is probably affected by 20 or more contracts (Affiliates, cable, production companies, distributors, etc...). It is not easy to make changes overnight. Do the networks need to update their business model? Yes. Can they? Hard to say. ABC had a nice iPad app they seem bent on destroying. The restrictions in the CBS iPad app make it nearly (not completely) pointless. Things started to go bad for them in the late 70s/early 80s when they became reliant on cable networks. If they were still ad driven, thi transition would be a no brainier..

this is great news

less so because of CW, but because it represents the natural progression for networks. The more that move off of these bundled packages/deals, the more choice we get as customers.

not sure why NBC, ABC, Fox, and CBS aren't already on the apple TV. They are all available without a cable package through a digital converter, so one would think they'd be forward thinking enough to have their programming on appleTV.

It is ridiculous that Apple does not have some apps like Pandora. Perhaps it is a licensing issue as the x-box does not have them either. At least the x-box has a browser so I can go to pandora's website.

Although moderately functional, I can't stand how clunky it is. I never use it.

This is exciting news! Not for CW necessarily but gives me hope to see other networks join in and provide content for free on Apple TV.

Given that the media companies have pretty much stalled out the BBC in releasing the Global iPlayer in the US, I doubt we'll see that any time soon.

It would be good for UK viewers (or other international users) but doesn't the iPlayer iPad/iPhone app do Airplay any way?

thoughts..

1st.. it's about damn time! (That networks stepped up, and that Apple is *hopefully* opening the AppleTV to 3rd party apps)

2nd.. Really hope to see existing sports-related apps, especially NASCAR and ESPN (for ALMS) work from day one, or that they are updated quickly.

3rd.. I've really enjoyed a few CW shows, like Supernatural, especially the episodes Felicia Day has been a guest star.

Too bad there's nothing I watch on CW.

Apple needs to bring the Amazon Prime video app to Apple TV, like they did with Netflix and Hulu+.

Wonder if they will make it accessible and provide closed-captions? Most of the streaming video does not provide it. It's strange that if you watch YouTube via the web browser under osx, you can get captions on a number of their clips, but if you try to do it on ATV, there are no options for CC. Ditto for most of Amazon Instant Video and iTunes.
