I imagine there are a lot of AVP users who live alone and thus don't care about EyeSight or whatever it's called, but worry about the glass getting scratched or get annoyed with having to put the cover on and off all the time.

You wouldn't need fancy covers like this if the front of the AVP wasn't a big heavy polished glass slab in the first place. iFixit says it's 34 grams, which doesn't sound like a lot, but it all adds up. That's about 5% of the total weight of the AVP at about 625 grams.
