This game reminds me very much of System Shock 2 in atmosphere and in conduct although a lot of survival shooters have people/entities giving you orders.

There have been mentions of coop online. Something where a group fights off critters?

Anyway, original DS question- which is the best weapon? I'm at the store and am a bit aggravated that the weapons descriptions don't tell you zip regarding power. I have a Cutter worth 10k and it has been upgraded twice. I can buy a Line Gun for 9k and a Pulse Rifle for 7k. This might lead one to believe that the cutter is worth the most. But does being worth the most equate to the best weapon for cutting up mon-stors? I would assume, but then again.
Thanks! :)

The ss2 feel is pretty much why I liked the game. :)

Maybe there's coop in the multiplayer mode, but I'm avoiding it.

The cutter upgraded is the best weapon. It and the pulse were my favorite combo.

I used the pulse rifle when I was overrun, on the yellow-ball-blobs, the creepy-crawly things that attacked in bulk, or pretty much any situation I needed a spray lots of bullets quickly and didn't want to wast the plasma-cutter's ammo.

BUT, when in a good position and so on, which was most of the time, I relied on the Plasma to DESTROYIFY!! :)

Chapter 4 now, still having a hard time with it... It just doesn't feel right, somehow. Mood-wise, I see a lot of Silent Hill and a lot of Bioshock...but not a whole lot of Dead Space.

I'll keep exploring a little further, but I can see myself selling this before the resale value drops too low (good thing I didn't activate the online pass!), and just playing DS1 again. There was just something about the atmosphere there that really set the game apart from all the others.

It also feels kind of pointless so far. As "Engineer Isaac" you were there for a reason, you had goals to accomplish, you were repairing things, doing stuff. As "Tortured Action Hero Isaac", so far the only task I have identified is "go find the intercom bitch because she says so, and curse a lot".

Depressing. :(

Regarding the original DS, combat can be a bitch. I'm learning not to stand still, not to let them get close to me under any circumstance. The worst is typically when you throw some important switch and a pack comes after you. This game has the most complicated controls I have seen in any console game. Still enjoying it.

I make sure I stomp squishy bodies to see blood spurt, have prizes pop out sometimes, and most importantly make sure they are dead. :D

hurray for the PC and its various inputs.

The mouse after being "corrected" made easy work of most situations. =P

The first thing I'd do when entering a new area, is dismember any corpses and throw them out of the way -- usually into another room -- and note where all of the vents were located. This was especially useful after throwing a trigger, since I new where the necros would most likely come and it prevented those flying necros from repurposing dead tissue.

I probably should be playing this on Mac's alternate personality.

Yes, stomping dead corpses (the un-converted ones) makes me feel guilty, but I realize it's for their own good. I see Halo's Flood influence at work here. :)

I made to Chap 4 before I realized you can stomp those boxes with green lights on them to get ammo and such. I was afraid if I stomped them they'd blow up. Lol. Damn, all the stuff I missed out on! One thing I don't like is how your character moves. He feels like he is wearing triple size lead boots.

I was in the engine room and when I fired the engine there were about six squishies came after me. I wonder how the difficulty settings alter game play- damage taken or number of mobs? As I recall in another very similar feeling game, Doom3, difficulty was controlled by the number of mobs coming after you not so much the damage you would take, or maybe I am confused on this.

Yeah, you probably should play it on that side, as you'd be able to react to a situation as fast as you could move the mouse, something the thumb doesn't offer. If anything, pick it up on a Steam sale. :) They had it for $6 when DS2 was released and I've seen it at the store for less than $20.

I never played Halo's Flood.

LOL, the first time I played through DS, I didn't know about the green light boxes until much later. The good news, is that when you backtrack, they'll still be there. :D

The first time a Necro popped up from playing dead, when I knew it wasn't quite right, was enough. Then after that, I would shoot it from a distance, then later grapple(when I got this item) it to see if it was really dead, so that I'd not risk wasting ammo. I got to a point that I'd just open a door, then grapple all boxes and corpses before entering. :O

On impossible, I recall more necros accompanying THE EVIL ONE, but it's been almost 2 years since I last completed it. I just recall the super brutes taking more time to kill, since I didn't stasis them, so it was lots of mouse whipping to turn around fast enough to shoot them in the back. But, since I had played hard the first time around, when I played through on impossible, I knew what to except, so I had an over abundance of ammo and so on. I focused on the Plasma Cutter right away and didn't bother with other weapons, so in many respects, the harder difficulty was an easier play through for me.

I just played about 10 min of the DS2 demo. It's seems decent, but mostly more of the same. That would not stop me from purchasing but would anyone who has played both games say primarily it is 'more of the same'? Anything new and different about the sequel? If necessary spoiler cautions appreciated.

I never played Halo's Flood.

The Flood was in the original Halo and Halo3. I can't remember if it was in Halo2. If I recall the Halo story correctly spoiler> the Halo rings were set up by an alien race called the Forerunners to deprive the Flood (a race of infectious parasites) of food sources by firing them and killing everything in the adjacent systems. <end spoiler. In some ways the converted human beings in Halo are just as horrific, but DS handily trumps Halo for gore and animation, especially when your character is dieing.

Don't spoils the games for yourself. :D

Until I can finally get around to playing DS 2, I'm avoiding all reviews etc. :)

++++++++++++++++

LOL, I can't recall the Flood at all, and I played through the original Halo twice on coop via the XBox, then once on the PC(vomit port), and of course to death multiplayer split-screen, but I really don't remember much about the game, beyond the repetition of going through the same type areas over and over again.

Like we're rambling about in the other DS thread. Halo is one of those games that blurred together and I can't recall many game story specifics about it, which is sad on my part, because it consumed so much of my time on consoles years back, just like Mario Party 4. :)

Hmm, I remember every detail... ;)

Regarding DS2, is there anything new or is it just more of the same as far as game play is concerned? The demo seemed like BTDT. I'm not asking you as you've not played it yet. Asking anyone! :)

Maybe if I had played through Halo single player the first time, instead of coop with friends, I'd remember a bit more, besides this; Drop ship, open area, small building entrance, elevator, bridge, REPEAT. Well, something like that. :)

Yep, gathered that about your question being towards anyone that could answer. :)

Just for ref, I stil haven't even played back up to where I get a weapon. The game was annoying me, as I ran into a few guys holding guns as I was fleeing, but as soon as they were taken by necros, the gun was gone.... GrRrRrrrr.

That's the problem. You have not played through the required 3+ times. :p

BUT, I did play it through twice on the XBox coop, and once on my PC, which by the way was freaking too easy when compared to the Xbox version.

I just need the +, the one more time and it would have clicked.

That has always been a great argument about how much better keyboard/mouse is over console controller. My understanding is that console games are calibrated to be easier due to the console controller inefficiencies. A keyboard/mouse equipped player should be able to wipe the floor with a console controller equipped player.

They should and generally they do. :) What's sad, is that there's kids out there that are so naive about gaming outside of a thumb-stick, they truly believe with all their heart, that they can match a skilled gamer with a mouse.

This is the same type of peep though, if given only an axe to cut down a tree, would claim they're better than someone using a chainsaw.

And yep, they balance things for a stick. This is why Dead Space wasn't that difficult on hard and because I had played it through once, easier on impossible. The necros would pause, which was plenty of time to dismember them with a mouse. There was no need for stasis, because it made the game a cakewalk -- which in turn would have ruined it for me.
