All they would have to do for me is bring back Front Row and make it so you can point it at non-iTunes directories. Don't like Plex. I just use Finder and VLC on a Mac mini.

Naw the remote is great. Far better than the ad covered Roku. I'd say a mild discount makes sense given it's age, but it's still 5 years ahead of the competition.

To each is own I guess. I prefer privacy.
To each his own on the remote, but it has been a major drawback for the majority of users, hence companies trying to re-create a better one or people using the old silver ones. Personally, it's poorly designed, way too touchy and lacks inutility on the orientation, you never pick it up the right way. Touch pad blows in terms of accuracy.

In terms of privacy, my smart home is controlled by 9 Alexa's, so I pretty much gave up on obsessing about privacy. There are bigger fish out there than me.

At 150 dollars, this is the first of the 4 I'll now have that I've paid for. So I guess my overall price is more like 40 dollars per unit.

I like my Roku's but these are a step up.

Still waiting on an updated freaking chip. Here's to hoping for this summer (like I did last summer and the summer before). Last refresh for AppleTV was in 2017.

Wow. I have AppleTV, and prefer the Roku. Ad covered? 4 little buttons, big deal.

That never go away even if the service does. Ad's are ads and should never be overlooked when deciding what to buy. And it's not just the remote as the ads are baked into the OS as well, sometimes taking up 40 to 60% of the screen.

outside of people who use it for gaming (guessing it's a small %), what are you looking for? It already supports the hold standard DV/ATMOS. Speed has never been an issue.
A redesigned remote! I have no performance issues but the remote is terrible.

So use a different one. You can use almost any remote with it. Apple would really need to do some work to improve the existing AppleTV remote. Maybe they could get rid of one button and move the trackpad click to account for angled force. Still, I find the design is so much better for navigating a TV UX than the old fashion mushy buttons.

I bought the 32GB version, and it worked great until I discovered Infuse and was able to rip all my movies to MKV and play them back at full quality without any transcoding. Now, every few months I get a message from Infuse that Apple TV ran out of space and deleted all my metadata. It takes a while to rebuild, and there are usually a few errors I have to go in and manually fix. I'd like to get a new one with more memory to avoid this, but it's a lot of money for no other improvements. Maybe Apple can come out with another generation that's less expensive?
Have you tried Plex? I have both, but only use Infuse when Plex won't play something (which is rare). I've never had a memory issue with Plex on any of our 4 Apple TV 4K's.

Curious what software you use to rip movies to MKV?

It is close to 4 years old hardware! Needs t get a micro SD like other streaming services and input usb input. Be able to access iPad apps too. I gave up on Apple TV and now use the Amazon Fire Box. Marvelous streaming box! Lots of outside apks to use. Fast too!

I've attempted to avoid getting an AppleTV. I have an older mac mini that works for the most part with AirServe installed for iOS mirroring, but if it comes to services like HBO, or regional cable (Fibe TV) that works in an app, DRMd content won't work with AirServe. That means monkeying around with a mouse and sometimes keyboard to go to the website 7:30PM each night for Jeopardy.

I've tried the 2017 model with the remote... don't like the remote. I know the remote software is built in to iPhone, so maybe that's more feasible/useful in the end run anyway(?) but never used it.

Holding out for a cheaper refresh for now...
You can also use any IR remote with it - on some newer TVs, the built in remote works with it too (My Sony Z9F remote works with the Apple TV).

Been using the 4K attached to server racks with ripped lossless movies (3000+) with stereo and surround sound tracks on my 8K OLED with a Mcintosh and B&W speaks home theatre. Of course nothing will replace physical media esp as 8K is a rarity but for decent 4K content on my servers it’s been solid. One issue which probably relates to licensing is the inability for local media playback of uncompressed ATMOS and TrueHD content. Netflix supports some but it’s compressed and they most likely pay fees. I’ve used Infuse Pro for years and beta test the app (version 7 is due out soon and the new Mac app is worth checking out for those on Big Sur esp if you’re using a Mac mini for your HTPC). It’s been a topic of discussion for many of us as other players support TrueHD, etc while the Apple TV 4K converts audio streams. There have been countless petitions for Apple to support it.

That’s my only big gripe - lack of audio codec support for local media. I’ve also had issues with storage space and metadata. Granted, I have roughly 5-6 GB’s of cached data from my libraries but topping out at 64GB is truly ridiculous at this point. Apple could have simply bumped storage specs between updates.

Otherwise, the remote is the other issue. I have no problem using it for its intended purpose with the Apple TV 4K but cable providers have been offering Apple TV 4K as an alternative to cable boxes. I tried it for a few sets - mostly kitchen and bathrooms - as a replacement for digital converters and the remote is cumbersome esp for those who aren’t tech savvy. Navigating the Spectrum tv app with it is unintuitive. Siri can handle changing channels but that can be annoying when watching a game and shows and flipping back and forth. It definitely needs a rethink.

Here’s hoping for a full redesign with larger storage, new remote, more audio codec support, faster processor, RAM, and perhaps a game edition for those into gaming.

Don’t know why it’s still that price. You can get a Roku or Fire Stick for around $30-$50, and most TV’s these days just have smart software built into them. You don’t need need them for AirPlay anymore since some manufacturers like Vizio and TCL build it right in.

I do wish they'd drop it a bit. But Roku is a mess of ads once you're used to Apple TV and try to go back. So just like everything else... if you're not paying for the product (or as much in this case), then you likely are the product. Plus Apple TV tends to be much less buggy and smoother in my experience.

We used to be all in on Roku, but about 2 years ago bailed and went all Apple TV (yes, the cost was silly since we needed 3 of them) after my son tried to change the Roku screensaver and found extremely questionable screensaver options with no filter or protection whatsoever. We're an iOS household, so that's just an added compatibility benefit as well.

Infuse is one of the few pieces of software I purchased the subscription to - it plays everything I've thrown at it.

They have the most bizarre TV strategy. Add game controllers and watch it take off. Update the hardware and make it great.

You can use Infuse in different ways. It can act as a Plex client together with a Plex server (which, I guess, is what you are using for?), or it can manage it's own library locally on the ATV. This includes not only metadata, but also cover artwork etc. If you have a big library, it can grow into the 100s of MBs. Due to the ATV's dynamic memory management, it can happen that the library data is purged to make room for other apps that you are using. Infuse then has to rebuild the library, which can take some time. This is probably what the OP is seeing. Personally I have only seen it once on my 32GB ATV, but that's probably because I don't use a whole lot of other apps on my ATV.

And yes, Infuse is great. Plays pretty much anything.

Since getting Airpods Max, I really want Spatial Audio support.

Prior to APM's I was otherwise largely satisfied with the current ATV4K. The remote ain't great but a lot better when put in a case (putting aside the lunacy of a case for remote control :D).
Do you have a link to your case? Thanks.

Surprise surprise no discount on Apple TV 4K on Amazon UK where it's currently £179.00. I can't justify paying this price especially for such old hardware especially when it is strongly rumoured to be replaced by a new model this year.

I didn't realize it would clear out cache if it was being frequently used. I assumed that was limited to apps that hadn't been launched in some time. I could see how that could be an annoyance for really large collections.

This is my gripe too. Lack of Atmos support means that I still end up using discs for some movies. I would love to move to an all Apple solution, as I love having easy access to content without having to manage storage, but Apple really messed up with the Movies and TV shows app. Infuse does a great job putting movies in release order because it doesn't require the sequel to be the same title + 2.

I can’t believe people are still paying over $100 for these things...

My fingers are crossed that apple is working to reduce inventory in advance of a new model. I also saw some apps are dropping support for Gen 3 which may be an indication that a new version is coming.

I’d love to see Apple release a small stick device that can easily mount behind TVs.

YouTube flipped the AV1 switch on so better quality and lower bandwidth consumption. If a device doesn't support AV1 hardware decode at 4K60 minimum but preferably 8K60 in 2021 it's no buy.
