Naw the remote is great. Far better than the ad covered Roku. I'd say a mild discount makes sense given it's age, but it's still 5 years ahead of the competition.

To each is own I guess. I prefer privacy.

I totally agree! Coming from iPhone/iPad, I throughly enjoy the touch remote. It works great with the native apps. YouTube, however, is a different story. The controls are all over the place. But that's not Apple's fault, that's Google's. And I doubt the poor UI was un-intentional -- Google wants you to buy their own products.

So while I fully understand some of the complaints users have about the remote, I find the issue mainly lies with the apps themselves and not the remote. Still, it would be nice if Apple produced a sleek, button operated alternative for the users that want it. Maybe priced at 29.99, like most other accessories.

To each his own on the remote, but it has been a major drawback for the majority of users, hence companies trying to re-create a better one or people using the old silver ones. Personally, it's poorly designed, way too touchy and lacks inutility on the orientation, you never pick it up the right way. Touch pad blows in terms of accuracy.

In terms of privacy, my smart home is controlled by 9 Alexa's, so I pretty much gave up on obsessing about privacy. There are bigger fish out there than me.
I am sorry you don't like it, though I doubt the majority of users have issues with it. A few vocal ones sure, but most people likely use it just fine. As far as the orientation goes, I don't understand this as the remote is asymmetrical and can be positioned in your hand by feel alone. The touchpad can be adjusted but I think most people find the default setting allows for quick and accurate navigation through the UI. Scrubbing through a video is a nightmare on other remotes but the Apple TV remote makes it fast, accurate, and intuitive to find exactly where I want to be.

As long as we acknowledge the privacy issue per discussion I concede it's simply a personal cost.

HBO Max just started adding 4K. So far it's limited to their day-and-date premieres of new theatrical movies (currently "The Little Things") and the first Wonder Woman movie. Showtime has some 4K content (e.g. "Billions"). Don't know about Starz.

but sounds like far and few between content wise across those three apps right?

thanks

I still have a 1080p ATV gen4, and think I'll stay put. Even with 4k OLED tv's

don't use mine much as it is, dug it out of my closet after like 2 years of hiatus. but it gets used over time, just not a ton.

For HBO Max yes, since they have just started. Showtime seems to have quite a bit. I just checked in the TV app (I have the discounted CBS+Showtime channel subscription) and several of the "spotlight" shows/movies in the top row of the Showtime channel are 4K (e.g. "Your Honor" and "1917").

I agree, this thing needs an update. With their Arcade initiative, I would have expected them to push Apple TV harder as an alternative game console. That’s basically all we use ours for, and it could definitely use a performance upgrade. Some games look better on the iPad Pro because it can handle additional visual options.

All good and you are right, people are more likely to complain than praise on the internet. I speak purely from experience, mine and everyone in the household who all like the "old" silver remote better. It's just too damn small and transparent being black on dark furniture. Every time I move, I end up swiping the touch pad inadvertently which results in a skip, pause or some sub-menu appearing. In terms of simply trying to land on the app you want on the home screen, another adventure. I know all the settings and have tried them all. In terms of the masses not liking it, IDK, BUT, it has been referenced many times by the founder of MacRumors when reviewing the ATV4K and the aftermarket ones developed as an alternative to it's short comings.

And yeah, nothing is private anymore anyway, so I'm not going to dig myself a bunker and stock up on canned goods. I am sure the next time I launch Facebook I will be hit with Remote Controls as a result of this post. There is just too much good technology to miss out on if you worry incessantly about someone knowing what you searched for on YouTube.

And still not worth a third of that price. Roku, Fire, and Chromecast with Google TV all are better. For whatever reason Apple TV is still stuck with the absolute worst version of apps for Netflix (can't play all of Netflix's content) and Youtube. Not to even mention the unbelievably awful remote.

They should just merge Apple TV and Mac Mini M1 into Mac Mini/TV M1. Give the Mac Mini M1 IR port, remote that triggers switchable TV interface and lower price point.

Since getting Airpods Max, I really want Spatial Audio support.

Prior to APM's I was otherwise largely satisfied with the current ATV4K. The remote ain't great but a lot better when put in a case (putting aside the lunacy of a case for remote control :D).
Agreed! I have played around with spatial audio a bit, but it feels more like a demo or a novelty when it's only good for watching videos on my tiny phone screen. I've got a beautiful 100-inch projector screen and I'm listening in stereo like a caveman.

Don’t know why it’s still that price. You can get a Roku or Fire Stick for around $30-$50, and most TV’s these days just have smart software built into them. You don’t need need them for AirPlay anymore since some manufacturers like Vizio and TCL build it right in.
It's definitely overdue for a refresh, but speaking as someone who's bought a couple generations of ATV so far, I'm actually happy to pay a bit extra for the integration with other Apple products. I know AirPlay is widely available now, but I find the ATV plays really well with my iPhone and AirPods. The remote is weird but actually does very well with scrubbing -- and anyway you can use your iPhone to completely replace it if you want.

The privacy stuff is important to me, too. It wasn't all that long ago that Vizio pulled this stunt. I'd just rather go with Apple, and a couple hundred bucks for something I'm going to use for several years is worth it to me.

YouTube tv app for Apple TV is still broken. The physical Apple TV remote stops working on YouTube tv app. I can still use Apple TV remote app in my iOS device to control YouTube tv all.
But I need to reboot the Apple TV itself for the Apple TV remote to work again with YouTube tv app

I replaced a Roku 2 with a Roku Express last year because some of the apps stopped supporting the old Roku. I don't know if it's because I got the $29 Roku, but it's been garbage since day 1. Reboots in the middle of movies, frequently stutters or downgrades to SD, loses WiFi connection (even though it's less than 10 ft from the router and nothing in the house losses WiFi), and more. So I decided to look at an Apple TV (I'm into Apple Fitness+ and would love to screen cast it to a bigger TV) and was shocked that it hadn't been updated since 2017 and never had a price decrease. I'm holding out for a refresh--and this discount isn't nearly big enough to get me to buy a 4 year old unit.
