December Activity Challenge

Whaaaaaaat? I haven’t exercised that many minutes since 2014 ... can I ask what you do for a living or how you do this? I need to stop posting .... heck reading these posts. 😢
For me it’s because my employer closed our office permanently in April and made us all remote workers (I’m a software engineer). My commute was roughly an hour each way, door to door. Instead of commuting I now walk for 45 minutes in the morning and 60-90 minutes in the evening.

I walk because I had to give up running about five years ago after I hurt my knee. The walking is comparatively low impact and I can go further and for longer than if I ran. My knee rarely hurts now, and I’ve lost 40lbs (18kg) since starting in April.

I'm not who you were asking but I regularly hit 130 minutes. Exercise is extremely important to me and I love doing it. If you have the motivation, determination, and discipline it's not hard.

My exercise minutes and miles are always high because I deliver mail, so I’m walking about 10-12 miles a day. The last 3 months I’ve gotten a break with getting closing rings, or doubling move goal.

30,400 calories this month which is 981 per day. I was hoping for an easier challenge as I live in NY and walking in the cold SUCKS. I hit over 1,000 yesterday, but that meant walking an hour in the morning, 26 minutes walking the mall, and running 3 miles on the treadmill. It's gonna be a LONG month.

At this point, I have decided that I would not bother with these achievements at all next year. I have been exercising moderate to hard everyday since this pandemic began and barely even lost a pound. Earning badges that no one sees is pointless.

Weight loss is more about diet than exercise. Of course exercise is very important and definitely helps with weight loss. But you can't outrun a bad diet.

Increasing your fitness level and stamina doesn’t always mean loosing weight. Can have the opposite effect. But if your healthier for it, it’s a win.

In general, I'd agree, but I haven't changed my diet and have lost 40lbs since April, walking roughly 50 miles a week, and the occasional erg workout. Still, I had a lot of low hanging fruit (ie fat) to get rid of. My weight loss is leveling off, from 5lbs/month the first couple of months to 2-3lbs/month October and November, so I think I might be now in a muscle building phase. I guess I had a pretty healthy diet anyway - I never eat fast food or drink sugary food, and have always eaten lots of fruit and veg. I just didn't move much recently, but I'm back to the same weight I was when I was running, before I hurt my knee.

If jbachandouris is exercising hard and not losing weight, it's possible they are already fit and don't have a lot to lose. Muscle weighs more than fat, and fit people often have a high BMI.

Rather than BMI, a decent rule of thumb is for your stomach measurement (at the belly button) to be no more than half your height, which I finally managed last month. My 40lbs loss means 4-5 inches off my waist - I didn't measure my waist in March/April but I'm going by how much fabric is loose around my waist when wearing the same trousers as then. I didn't need a belt then, but I need a new smaller belt now.

So for the first time ever, or at least that I’ve ever noticed, I got a mid-month reminder and status update on my challenge. I think I started around needing to burn 1045 calories per day. I’ve slipped to just over 1,200 now. This is still doable, especially since I Apple Fitness+ is now active and I’m always a sucker to try these new things out. That should push me over the top I believe.

Nice to see people making the December challenge already. I have 11 days to go because my Watch decided I can't motivate myself to finish early.
