Have you considers the Honda CR-V? It's a great car really for the price 30k will get you a fully loads CR-V if you are a good negotiator you can get one lower than MSRP. I used to work for a honda dealer and they are really good cars for the value good quality and not expensive manintence, the othe car I would suggest is a Mazda CX-5 they are the drivers SUV and are also really great cars. Just depends what your want though.

The Honda CRV is a great great car, except it does not have a V6 engine, or even a turbo option. Its a seriously underpowered car.

What about a Honda Crosstour V6?

The RAV4 looks pretty good too

Out of all cars I'd probably go for the Ford. I don't typically like American vehicles (with the exception of the new focus) but the VW looks very boring to me. Plus, they are expensive in the long run. OK if you are going to lease or keep it within the warranty period.

RAV 4 is a great mini SUV to, but its just so boring looking inside and out, the Ford Escape gives you a little bit of excitement looks wise, and they drive nice to.

The Ford is a little too much for me.
Toyota products are pretty good anyways, so I trust them for the long run.

How did you arrive at that conclusion? We got my wife's new '12 Beetle last summer at zero percent for 60 months and also my new '13 Jetta in December for zero percent and 60 months. VW is doing 0% for 60 again now, and often does 0% for even 72 months...and not at year end only, last summer when '13 CCs first hit lots they did 0% for 72 months even with '12s still on the lots.

VW constantly does 0% for long terms. It's rare that they aren't doing it, actually.

I probably should have been more specific. I've looked at Jetta and Toureg TDI models which are excluded from some of the financing offers, I'd imagine due to high demand. This may have changed recently because I haven't looked for a few years. After seeing the fuel economy and more importantly the resale advantages of diesels, I won't drive anything else if i can help it.

I've owned lots of Fords, I typically don't like American cars all that much, despite living in America. But Ford has always been the exception, starting in the early 2000s, they started to think a little different, and they try to be better.

Not only does Ford offer better payment plans and rates, I think they're a damn sight better built than the new VWs

Yeah, if I didn't have a Ford Fusion it would probably be a European car like a Audi A4 or a BMW 3 series. It would be a step up from the fusion but I'm very happy with it given what I paid for it. My dad got a new diesel F-250 and that thing gets 22MPG on the highway which is impressive given it has 400 horsepower. I'm pretty impressed with the escapes 33MPG as well.

Wow, thanks all of such great input! :D

Had a Volkswagon once (Passat, not the Tiguan). Loved the ride/handling. Maintenance was VERY expensive. Factor that in.

Yes, I am factoring in maintenance. One of the reasons for cost. Ford and VW are a tad high (although VW takes the cake) on the expense per shop visit.

Are you buying or leasing? How long are you keeping the car?

Sorry I didn't mention this. I am buying the ride since it'll be my car for around 7 years. Yes, I expect it to last this long.

plus you'd want to get the XT on the forester, as the other engines are quite powerless and anaemic, especially when considering it's an SUV.

edit: if i understand your budget is around $30K - have you considered the new jeep cherokee? for that amount you could get top spec's if im not mistaken

I did look at it, but at this point Jeep only has the Grand Cherokee for sale and the 2014 Cherokee itself is on a "Notify Me" list which means not for sale yet.

I did consider this car, but I felt it was not for me. Mazda, don't like them.

Yes they do look pretty nice. RAV4s are very nice looking. I know Toyota's reliability (I owned a '95 Corolla and that thing never gave me an engine problem) is top notch. However, looking at it on Toyota's page, I have to either get an specific trim of vehicle or the feature isn't there. Kinda forces me to be top model which, if I can avoid, would be nice. (just add optional features I like)

I recently bought a Honda Crosstour. I really like it. Plenty of room. I throw my bike in the back of it all the time. I plan on putting a hitch mount on it in the near future instead of transporting my bike in the car.

It was one of those last minute things for me. When I figure went looking at a new car the Crosstour was not on my list nor was a crossover. Like 2 days before I thought about looking it and went test driving and well really liked it. Orginally I was thinking about a mini cooper or an accord.

Turned out I really liked the Crosstour. Crossovers are great. They give you the MPG of a car and cargo room of a small SUV.

I crossed out Honda already. Didn't like the CR-V

To be fair CR-V is not the crosstour. I do not expect the Crosstour to make your list.
CR-V is built on the Civic platform. Crosstour is built on the Accord platform (heck up until this year it was call the Honda Accord Crosstour)

Do you mind posting what features are important to you? That would help us make informed suggestions.

One thing to note, with Subaru there are many add-ons that don't have to be added at the factory. Cargo area nets, body side moldings, satellite radio, remote start, interior footwell lighting (more than the ones that come on with the door opening). Those are a few, there are more, and if they're added at the time of purchase they're included in your factory warranty.

That said some things DO have to be built in, such as the push-button start, Navigation, rearview camera (not that it couldn't be a 3rd-party add-on).

Knowing what is most important and what you'd like but don't need is helpful.

In my case, I had test-driven an Outback in Limited trim, a week later I decided I didn't NEED the leather and dual-zone climate, saved myself the $3000. Plus, they didn't have a Limited on the lot in the color I wanted when they came back with a reasonable offer on my trade.

It's been my experience that people either "get" Subaru's or they don't.

Although the Escape has a marginally higher price ($32.5k)

:eek::eek::eek:

I'm absolutely flabbergasted that a Ford Escape, even a high-end trim model, goes for over $30k. I know that's the type of vehicle you're looking for, but that price seems absolutely ridiculous. I hope you can get a better deal than that.

I bought my Ford Expedition (mid-level trim) for a couple thousand more than that, brand new. Paying that much for a small crossover just seems like highway robbery (pun not intended).

My moms 2013 Chevy Equinox 2.4 liter AWD LTZ cost $34K. Full size BOF SUV's cost a lot more today. The cost to replace our 2002 Suburban with a 2013 Suburban would be like $50K. Think the 2002 Suburban cost around $40K.

Well, I listed the Escape's Internet MSRP. I went back to Nissan's, Ford's and Kia's dealers to try and bring the price down and I got $2k, $3.45k and $2.4k off each vehicle respectively.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I would like the power liftgate. I do travel quite some bit with my friends or family, so having that is quite useful in full hands (which is common). I don't care about navigation or Sirius add-one as I have my iPhone for Google Maps and Pandora/Spotify for music.

And yes this is also true. Mom bought (and still has) a 2013 Ford Explorer which set her back $35k. Now an Explorer can go for higher than that.

Not sure on SYNC(probably can), but with the Equinox's mylink, you can have Pandora play through the radio when paired with your phone. Also has the powerlift gate.

Though did you test out the Escape's foot activated liftgate? That looks cool.

Mazda CX5 is highly rated, as is the SkyActiv engine.

It's on my short list for the near future.

My last car was a VW Tiguan. It was quite awesome, but honestly I still think that VW (VAG in general tbh...) are stingy as **** with their options.

Yes, I figured it could. Never thought of the Equinox as an option thou. Yes I did test that feature in the Escape, I was amazed how simple and responsive it was.

I thought there'd be lag of some sort, nope.

Looked at it, but it somehow doesn't catch my attention.

Do you have to unlock the car for it to work? It may be petty, but the one thing I like about just having a power liftgate is just press the button on the key fob, the liftgate will open, but the rest of the car is locked. So when I finish loading groceries and go to return the shopping cart just have to close the liftgate and the car is still locked while I walk the cart to the cart return.

You should consider the Equinox/Terrain( I prefer the design of the Terrain). You probably would go for the 3.6 V6, but my mom loves the 2.4 4 banger in hers. I managed to get 34.8 MPG with it on a road trip. My mom and I love it.

But, my second choice would be the Escape.
