I'm curious to know, which of you are being denied have VISA, AMEX, MasterCard, Discover. When I was in the store a customer with VISA got denied, but ran it again with a MasterCard and was approved. I am not sure what this currently entails since it's not the case with everyone, but it might be good to eliminate other areas.

Very Not True. A lot of young people, just starting out with credit, can have a low credit score as they are building. It does not mean they are a deadbeat or anything even close to that. Additionally, there are people that go through major medical issues, which can damage credit, but does not mean they are a deadbeat.

They key is open but unused credit. Also having asset based debt is a plus to the score.

Just back from picking up my 6S Plus.

Many folks were enrolling in the upgrade program in store. There was a 18 year old in line in front of me who was going to attempt to enroll, and he had no previous credit. As I left, I wished him good luck, and he said he had been approved, and was just waiting to receive his phone from the staff. So, it would seem that approvals are coming for folks with no credit, yet declines are coming for others with excellent credit. It does not make a whole lot of sense!

No credit is good credit. But you need a income.

I agree with most of what you are saying but no way in hell i would let them put another hard inquiry on my file. in either case within a 30 day period from the same vendor I don't think it counts twice. I am wanting to dispute the first hard pull from them...sob's

Its not 30 days. At most its a week.

Wow, after reading this thread I don't feel so bad. Not sure why, but I too was declined for the iPhone Upgrade Program, and just bought the phone outright. This alarmed me so as soon as I got home to make sure nothing usual was showing on my credit report. I pulled it, and found nothing unusual, did see where Citizen's Bank had pulled it. There is no reason that I can see that I was declined, unless it was an error that others seem to be experiencing. Not trying to brag at all, as I know how tough it is to build from bad credit to good, but the average of my credit scores that I pulled was 822.

What I don't understand is why a credit card is needed at all. A hard inquiry for credit is all that is needed. ARE THEY USING THE CREDIT CARD AS A BACKUP FUNDING SOURCE?

I also just got declined. I have an excellent credit score and was using my Platinum Amex - Ended up having to pay full price for the phone.
40 min. drive each way to the store and then this happens. To say I am annoyed would be putting to very mildly!

Below 750 ish is not a high score anymore. Check your open revolving credit total and total amount used. I will bet that is is the reason for the decline.
I said well into. I used my Amex without a a limit, and certainly one where I've previously gone way over its current piddling balance, have 5 digits of credit available on my visa, etc. And certainly plenty enough credit to buy an iphone which I bought outright when this thing failed.

just bc you have a good credit score doesn't mean you are always going to be approved for every deal. you can have someone that has a great score that has barely any credit history or maybe only has history bc their parents were a cosigner on their car.

I have a friend that has a high credit score, but he barely has any available credit bc he doesn't believe in credit cards. So he literally has zero credit cards. Sure he has great credit score from renting etc, but he has no experience with credit card use, personal loans, auto loans, mortgage etc. He has a hard time getting approved for things bc of this. He doesn't seem to understand as his score is higher (above 700). But when banks make credit decisions, it's not simply made just bc of the credit score number. There are tons of factors. That's why you may see someone with a 610 get approved, bc his utilization is below a certain number (has a lot of available credit) and he's obviously not using it up. Where as someone who barely has any available credit due to lack of credit accounts or cards is basically showing maxed out.

They basically look at it like this.....if you have 10 credit cards with each having $10,000 credit limit...you have $100,000 that you could potentially abuse. If you barely use these funds but may make 1 late payment on an auto loan and tank your score, but your utilization is super low on the rest of their available credit so it shows that they know how to manage the funds and not be tempted to max out the accounts and get in trouble. Now someone else could have 1 credit card with a $1,500 limit...but every month be maxing out the card...their utilization would be through the roof bc they don't have much available credit as they don't have much experience beyond the 1 credit card.

Well, I guess I'm joining the club.

I'm in the 595-605 range, have my house, a recently purchased upright freezer I'm waiting on the first bill for, and my house as any open debt on my credit report. It also shows my car loan paid off completely, and was denied.

Was told by the people on the floor that it is a hard pull, and to contact Citizens bank in 24 hours.. Problem is, with it being a Friday, they won't be open until Monday, so everyone getting declined today will have to wait until Monday to find out why from them, or 7-10 days for the letter to arrive. Meanwhile, the hard pull is still on your report.

Additionally, if Citizens Bank can't tell you why, you have to wait another 30 days before trying the AUP again. This seriously makes me wonder if that bank was truly ready for the onslaught of people going with the AUP. Either way, this is really frustrating, as I have nothing detrimental on my credit report.

I'm curious... Do you have any discrepancies between your credit card, driver's license, and phone billing info? Or are they all exactly the same?

something has happened to drive your score below 600. Also, how much available credit do you have vs. how much you are using?

Credit card was newly issued, within the past 6 weeks. nothing on it to be a discrepancy.

Housing collapse hit me really hard, and had to get a loan modification for my house. But other than that, nothing. Only thing that was open throughout that period was the loan for my car, which was paid off completely last March.

As for how much credit I have, it's basically none, as the entire time I hadn't even attempted to open a line of credit for anything. 3 weeks ago, I did apply for a card at Sears to pay for an upright freezer. Again, while I could easily pay it off entirely, I'm using it and the AUP to help in rebuilding that credit: get it back into the 700 range.

But with reports here that people under that were getting approved, I'm confused.

Some people have mentioned even having a spelling mistake on their address information on one of the three pieces used (CC, DL, and phone account). Just wondering if that's a commonality.

Nope.. brought DL, credit card, phone account, current bill, and US Passport. All had the same address.

Credit decisions are based on a combination of what lots are saying- pure credit scores from the 3 bureaus. DTI, credit utilization, #of recent pulls, derogatory marks, etc. But they also see employment, income, rent or own, all debt etc.

A lot of you who have 750-800+ sound like you had a few other hard pulls in the last month. Those will show and could get you denied as much as a low score. Generally in 2 years the bank wants to see no more than 12-16 hard pulls- including applications for new credit cars, new loans, cars, boats, houses, even a prior cell phone or carrier change. Not just credit you got but credit you applied for even if you didnt go through with the deal. Over that you get denied just as quickly as a low score too.

Your credit score is a determination of probability of risk lending you the money, of not getting paid (higher the score the less risk but even a 700-749 carries a 5% risk of delinquincy still)- not your worthiness to the money

I already have a Barclays card so I'm not terribly worried about the credit check part. What does concern me is just how Apple is going to handle communicating with the carriers. Like do they see if you have an upgrade available through say at&t? I have a next contract now that isn't up for another few months so I'm giving that phone to my niece and she will pay the $ per month while I do this thing with Apple. My only question would be does this tie into the carrier that has your number, etc?

Not at all. My line is not eligible for an upgrade with AT&T but that didn't matter at all. You only have to fulfill your contract obligations - buying a phone on the Apple Upgrade Program has nothing to do with your contract, upgrades, etc.

From what I'm reading, it seems like people with the best credit are being declined for AUP, while people with moderate credit are being approved. Very strange.

It was pretty skeptical lining up for my reservation this morning. For 20 minutes I was constantly refreshing the forums and reddit to see what the update was on the upgrade program. Fortunately I was approved and everything went as smoothly as possible.

I have decent credit and used my barclaycard cc.

Signed up today to share my experience ! Have excellent credit, everything paid on time, and was DENIED. What I was seeing with other people in the line was pretty much most people were being denied !!

I just opted to buy my 6S full price.

I have pretty good credit, own a few cards like Visa, Mc, Amex, and today used my Visa Apple Barclay card and got approved pretty fast with no issues. I honestly use my cards for a lot of things. My dad is 65 with a really good credit score as well and used his Visa and it went right though as well at an Apple Store. We pay pretty close attention to our credit as well.

What did people here see when they were denied? Did you see the screen of the rep's iPhone that you were entering your SSN and stuff on? Wondering if there was a specific message that said "denied" or if it was something else.
