Looks like the debug screens from the early iphone prototypes. Please let this not be the real design - it looks horrible. It would singlehandedly kill the platform...

Most of the rumors, and mock-ups based on those rumors, seem to point to Apple moving away from photo-realistic elements (icons, buttons, textures) and to this "flat" design that may include simple shapes with simply drawn icons and less 3D.

While I'm no fan of the overly done skuemorphism we've had recently, I don't understand this move away from 3D and photo-realism.

I do. Removing shadows etc and going to flatter icons could be a move to more vector graphics. And that could be a move to a thinner iOS so Apple can avoid the bloatgate issues that hit MS and Samsung. Reduce graphics, reduce fluff tricks, remove non essential 'widget' apps

The only thing that makes me a little bit afraid is that one can see what horrifying software/hardware Apple created while Jobs wasn't at the company. I hope history does not repeat itself :)

Guys,

Buzz on twitter right now is suggesting this is not a mockup, but an actual screenshot of iOS 7 beta. So, it's the real deal. However, many of the icons are just placeholders that will (hopefully!) be improved/refined before the final iOS 7 ships in September.

Am sure if they were testing new designs they'd keep those well locked down, but for testing new functionality they could easily drop in temp icons that could easily be switched out for the real ones. Plus I thought it had pretty much been stated that it is a mock-up...

And just because something is "buzz" on twitter doesn't make it fact. As you say 9to5Mac admitted it was a mockup. No way is Apple going to show off iOS 7 with placeholder icons on the home screen.

It's either a mock up or a major ****** up. Give me the eye candy, we're not making more powerful devices just to have UI designs from the 80's.

They have hopefully stayed true to their ability to create a love affair with the man machine interface. That's what Apple does better than anyone.

Just no....I'm sure if they went to this style, it would look a 100 times more professional.

If you're going to do a mock-up, at least make it look NOT like Vtech kids handheld game.

This must way off from the real thing... All one has to do is look at apples wwdc logo to get a hint of the colors and look of icons.... They always drop hints win their banners and logos.

The wwdc logo has super viberent colors where as this mockup looks pale and dead!

I Dont believe it will be anything near this !

I thought 9to5Mac said it was a mockup based on something they saw? Didn't they even refer to the guy who mocked it up as a "photoshop guru"? Do you really think Apple is going to show off placeholder home screen icons at WWDC?

Wow! I didn't realize there were so many folks out there that only use iOS because it's prettier than Android.

Are we really THAT superficial?

Iphone users are the definition of superficial (hint girls). This is why apple will never move away from its draconian static icon system.

Looks like iPhone 12 from the Laos market near the border to Thailand.

LOL.

Now, I understand what they meant yesterday when they said iOS 7 would be "polarizing", at least based on pages of comments in this thread. Now, I'm waiting for the mainstream to catch on to this change and the negative response.

I'm not sure I like it, but I don't dislike it... But I doubt its accurate! :D

that is all...

Nailed it! The perfect response to this story.

I'd bet they saw an alpha version that used placeholder graphics. I bet the placeholder graphics still looked better than this, and they just suck at using Photoshop or remembering details.

I think it will be flatter, but not generic. I mean honestly, that camera icon! I don't think I've seen one that bad in the App Store—even on some of the worst camera apps that are gimmicky pieces of crap. As a designer, I don't see the point in making it look like an SLR. That metaphor just doesn't resonate with people today and the "common camera" that people use.

This all being said, I do think that the design they show later today is going to piss off a whole lot of people. This is the test to see if Apple can make it without Steve Jobs going over every little detail as the OS and hardware has gone largely unchanged (visually) since his passing. He likely worked on the early designs of the Retina Macbook Pro, iPhone 5, and iPad Mini. This...maybe the beginnings. Any involvement would be much further removed than the hardware products that shipped last year.

For the sake of design I pray they don't mess this up because everyone is going to copy it.

I hope it is nothing like this, this is ugly and boring. Do something way different if you are going to change it....

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is total BS. This doesn't even LOOK like something Apple would make. You guys FAIL.

God a lot of you are just unbelievable. The os was just fine but you let Apple tell you you need some change. If it turns out to be like this mockup, serves you right.

I've been reading for months people complaining that iOS is 'long in the tooth' and they want the interface to be 'updated'.

Well the current interface works fine.

Yet in response Apple is changing the interface and not necessarily for the better. Peoples' need for fashion drives market forces to switch to one of a dozen flavors of Android. Apple is being pressured to makes changes to stay attractive to consumers.

I hope the new mobile OS turns out okay.

But after using iTunes 11, I am disappointed. Features have been dropped, processes that worked flawlessly are now unpredictable, it's hard to if find tools that we used for years, buttons are placed arbitrarily on the screen and disappear in one mode then reappear in another mode. This is the result of making cosmetic changes with no real need to do so except to placate whining fanboys who want an "updated interface". I have yet to find any improved performance benefit.

The mockup for the new iOS seems to be another exercise in making cosmetic changes for no other reason than fashion. I hope that Apple does a great job and that this update is in fact an actual improvement.

I expect that there will be changes other than cosmetics in iOS 7, but reducing the complexity of the icons & etc should free up processing power to do useful things.
