Could they be moving to a 3 year product cycle?

iPhone 6
iPhone 6S
iPhone 6SS

iPhone 7
iPhone 7S
iPhone 7SS

I hope not.

that would be a bad name for a product launch in Germany :D

Move the power button to the top again, please?
It's almost ridiculous how much more often I accidentally press it on my iPhone 6 compared to previous iPhone models since the button is lined up (on the opposite side of the phone) with the ”increase volume” button, which is convenient to use for taking pictures and starting video recordings when holding the phone horizontally.

hell no, i wouldnt even be able to reach it

IF Apple not only keeps the EXact same design for the 7 as the 6...but also only includes the new features like a dual camera in a "pro" version of the 7 plus...Sales will definitely take a hit and Apple's stock will continue to plunge. I'd wait until the end of the year to buy more apple shares. Seems like they are holding off until the 10th anniversary of the iphone in 2017 to radically redesign their flagship device.

I have a hard time believing this. This is apples flagship product and stocks are not doing what they were a few months ago.

The company needs to show its investors and the public it can deliver. Keeping the same form factor on their best selling product would be sure suicide.
I have been a serious, enthusiastic, Apple customer and shareholder since 1991. While they've grown to become a world class operation, the impact of all things iOS has been a mixed bag. The iPhone has propelled Apple into the stratosphere, while concurrently presenting challenges that have been very difficult for the company to manage.

The ongoing massive cash haul enables them to do anything they wish, Apple's Narcissism knows no boundaries. Torn between their lavish Rock Star lifestyle and the rather mundane task of running their day to day operations, the company seems to be content with its tendency to practice profit taking over creating fresh innovative products.

Yeah, I think so too, but they are going to do a lot of damage in the next year and a half if this is the case as sales are bound to drop further, they will make less profits, shares will fall further. If they lose value to Alphabet then investors will jump ship will they not?
I think Cook is playing a dangerous betting game here. In fact it will do Apple a LOT of good to lose more profit, more sales, and that share price drop a lot further. May give them the kick up the ass they deserve and make them change things up.

Another day, another rumor - this time, oooh, with not just a sketch, but a purported sketch! And the crowd starts getting the shakes, stomps their little feet, and collectively bleats (in so many words): Waaaaahhh, Apple is doomed with their unbounded narcissism, somebody get me my soft blankie, waaaaahhh...

Pretty much the iPhone equivalent of a MacBook processor refresh.

I wonder what on the software side they'll push as new features exclusive to the iPhone 7. Multi-tasking would be great.

And they were right before too, considering Apples sales plummeted and so did it's profits and as a result it's shares, you should remember that.

I think we all know the drill. Same iPhone 6 design (save for a few visual differences), but add one killer improvement.

Just like the 6s added Force touch, this will add a markedly better camera.
And that's how Apple will promote this heavily.
Nothing inspiring, but this is the result if they're moving off a tic-toc cycle.

Wall Street created ridiculously unfair expectations, so now they're trying to save face.

Wall Street cares about money only as do other stock markets, it's peoples pensions etc they deal with after all hence the expectations, if Apple is not making the money they'll go to someone who is. It is share holders who decide how valuable Apple is, like anyone one else who floats, that's the risk you take with it.

iPhone 7 just keeps sounding worse...and worse...and worse :(

The thing is too, if Apple is planning a big release in 2017, the smartphone industry will have progressed as well, so I feel that the 2017 iPhone will be dated once it comes out. I mean, they're talking about putting an AMOLED screen in it, but those have already been around for a while. Same thing with wireless charging. I do hope that Apple does manage to come out with an impressive flagship sometime soon; it's a shame to see them falling behind.

After this leak it's looking to me like Apple will release the iPhone 7 and either the 7 Plus with dual camera and other features OR they will announce an iPhone 7 Pro so it could go:

iPhone 7 - same dimensions as 6s, a better camera, anntenna line change.

iPhone 7 Plus/ Pro - dual camera, antenna line change, 256GB option and possibly more features.

OR they could keep the 7 Plus and add the Pro to the range so it would make 3 iPhone 7 models.

Apple can't like the press that's it's getting which suggest next year's phone will be "far more compelling."

but that's exactly the truth. i'm sure they wanted the 2017 phone to be ready in 2016 but it didn't happen. the new materials, OLED screens, wireless charging and more just didn't come together in time so they will bring out the iPhone 6SE or something and try to convince the world that a faster AX processor and some software enhancements are worth it. i am on the new style yearly upgrade plan but i'm still disappointed. 2017 has to be a knock it out of the park year, has to be.

Apple seems to be catering to folks on the upgrade cycle that hit all the high notes.

iPhone 3G
iPhone 4
iPhone 5
iPhone 6 Plus

Honestly, I'm not really clamoring for a new iPhone like I have been in previous years. Surprise, surprise. 2017 is not rumored to be very compelling

I find it funny when people pipe up with rubbish like this.
Let’s see. When was the last time you bought something for the sole reason that it works well?
Last pair of shoes, clothes, coat, car? The list goes on. Some of us like things to be nice as well, is that concept completely lost on you? My 5S still works excellently. Didn’t like the 6 as as ugly as sin so I didn’t buy it. If my 5S dies should I get the 6 or do I have your permission to choose the better looking SE with it’s crippled feature set?
Dude you need to chill, sarcasm escapes you.

Is it just me who thinks the form factor is really past its time? The big chin, forehead and side bezels need to go.

Sure the chin needs to be there for Touch ID (for now!) but there's no excuse for the side bezels!

Yep, and with it not changing likely this year, this is why Apple is hitting new 52 week lows today and will continue to push lower.

If it's thinner and faster, fine until 2017 when the rumoured big redesign will come.

Not looking to upgrade my 6S anytime soon, anyway.

people got used to a new design every 2 years, it will disappoint many if this won't be the case this year.
sad, because the current models don't have that much to improve anymore, hardware wise, what i feel is lagging behind is the software counterpart.

It's a shame that the iPhone 7 is just a refresh. Why not implement the dual camera in this model?

hahahahahaha the rumours REALLY are painting a picture of basically it's an iPhone 6... still.....

I would say if Apple uses the same design for the third year.......

But they just relaunched the iPhone 5 design so I won't be surprised if they use the iPhone 6 design with little improvement, no real R&D cost, oh maybe it'll be thinner and reduce functionality as a result, but plenty of people will buy it.

I'll keep my 6S though, considering it'll be exactly the same phone more or less.

Hmm I don't predict a rise in those iPhone sales anytime soon, only more of a loss.

I think the smart move for Apple is to go back to flat edges like the iPhone 5 and return to that level of thickness for the iPhone 7. That way, it's easier to flush the camera lens back in and make more room for the internals.

It's the rounded edges they need to ditch like right now. Having a 5.5 phone with flat edges would make it so much easier to pick up and hold even when typing. Plus, it makes it look classier.

After all, the SE model seems to be a hint of that direction, yes?

If they don't, then we know who's to blame for that lack of forward thinking and design taste.

"...and it appears increasingly likely that Apple will break away from its typical tick-tock "S" design cycle and maintain the same 6-series form factor for a third consecutive year."

I've seen/read rumors of the antenna bands not being bands but rather flanking the top and bottom edges. That would be a new form factor technically. Add in a new camera cutout, possibly now sitting flush and it the home button becomes a touch unit, this would be considered an update to the form factor in my mind. Not a re-design, but certainly not the same old thing.
