Edit: Looking more closely, I'm seeing a date as well. 2010 7 29 (Upper right of 3rd pic...right above the N90 designation). Can't make out what the red stamp says.

If Im seeing correctly, the red stamp says in the center 2010 8 4 (Aug 4th, 2010).

Theory,

Apple held a press conference on July 16th regarding the antenna issue, these drawing were sent to Foxconn 2 weeks later on July 29th under the code name n90 (iPhone 4). During the press conference, Steve Jobs mentioned that they would give out free bumpers to anyone affected until sept 30th, in hope that by then they would have a better understanding of the situation and a better solution.

These drawing may have been a last minute prototype of an antenna fix, and some of these may have been manufactured for testing, but upon further investigating, Apple realized that issue only affect a small group of people and that the issue was just blown way out of proportion by the media and felt no need to fix the current design (the current solution of handing out free bumpers seems to be effective, no need for a change). I'm sure its very common for a company to have a Plan B, C and even D, ready to go just incase.

My theory maybe a little far-fetched, but hey, thats why it's theory.

I reckon that this is an antenna fix for iPhone 4. Surely iPhone 5 will have a fairly distinctive redesign so that in the consumers mind it is clearly separated from iPhone 4 to break the link between that form factor and the so called 'antenna-gate'.

It would also radiate more RF energy right into your brain, and thus have a higher (and much less desirable) SAR rating. The antenna at the bottom configuration is an attempt to radiate microwaves away from your head, not directly into it.

We're all gonna die of cancer anyways... Why not have better cell reception while we're kicking the bucket.

I'd like to think so! But I'm not gonna get my hopes up...

**** you Apple! If this is the the new design it goes to show that there was a major design flaw after all. TBH there isnt going to be a new super duper design overhaul. The phone is at a stage now where its spot on however if they release this new design then be prepared to offer a trade in service for all us who bought your iphone4 in good faith but have been forced to either use a bumper or live with dropped calls.

SJ and his cronies needs a punch in the mouth as this usually helps rectify any 'I can do whatever I want and not admit liablity' tendencies. Apple seems to be getting to big for its boots, bullyesque if you like. Who the **** are they to force anyone to take anything down?

LOL!!!! Just had a thought isnt it weird that jobs actually does look like Mr Garrison from South Park! Move along nothing to see hear, there is nothing wrong with your iP4... Mmmmkay!

iPhone 4s ? Not in the drawing.

Whatever this device is - the drawing and the photo have little in common. The drawing shows an object that is much thinner than the current iPhone, certainly thinner than the frame shown in the photo.

Perhaps an iPod touch, which would need less battery capacity?
Hardly a widescreen iPad, as the camera would be too big.

Apple realized that issue only affect a small group of people.

It affects everyone. It has nothing to do with a device-by-device hardware flaw. It simply goes unnoticed if the current available signal strength is strong enough to survive a 20dB device attenuation. Amazing how some people still don't grasp that concept.

Handing out free bumpers was the chosen solution because it placated customers and for the most part, the media. Eating the cost of some $0.05 bumpers is also a hell of a lot cheaper than redesigning, recalling and redistributing millions of devices. That much should be obvious to anyone. The issue is that the media blew a device flaw into a "device-killing flaw", which it wasn't. The majority of people likely live in areas saturated with signals, making the design flaw essentially a non-issue, and one mitigated enough with a bumper. End of story.

You assume it displays the outside frame connected. However, that doesn't appear to be the case. This appears to be just the back glass attached to a substrate.

Also, it has a code of N90 on it. That tells us it is definately the iPhone 4.

Whether or not the design doc matches the parts in the video...that's anybody's guess...but I'm thinking no.

Nothing to see here folks, move along. Not a major re-design by any means.

Neither was going from the 3G to 3GS.

Neither was going from the 1st iPhone to the 3G. They ALL look pretty much the same as each other (save for a slightly different back).

So when will Apple do a major redesign? I'd say the main form of the phone has never really changed.

I didn't bother with the 3G but got the 3GS cos my 1st gen was getting too slow. I haven't bothered with the 4G cos I didnt really see the point - didn't seem like an upgrade to me. I'll be soooo disappointed if the 5G is just a tweaked 4G.

I appreciate there's the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" argument but, equally, if Apple don't push the design on their iPhone ever forward, surely consumers (like me) will become bored of the design/tiled home screen/same ringtones etc etc., not feel so compelled to fork-out another £500 and start to look at the competition.

I'm sorry but what the hell are you talking about? The iPhone 4 WAS a major redesign. The main form of the phone has never really changed? What exactly do you want changed in the hardware? Your listed complaints are all software complaints which can all easily be changed in iOS 5. Same ringtones though? Is that really that much of a concern to you?

I still thing that this might be from an early iPhone4 prototype. But anyway: good if the iPhone5 is only minor update - thanks to the stupid AT&T contracts I can only update every other year and that way I'm not going to be to annoyed that I can't upgrade right away. Of course, I don't know if there will be a any major internal upgrades.

Unfortunately you don't do distinctive cell phone redesign in a year. As mentioned earlier, i4 design began at least 2y ago, and the first drawings were probably made as early as shortly after first iphone sales started.

Ofc there may be some alternative designs make for i4 that were discarded at some point during the development that may serve as fallback options. But all of those are designs that were considered lesser alternatives for some reason.

That's the craziest part I feel, as I sit here typing this on an iP4 there's already the iPhone 7 being drawn up iPhone 6 being designed and iPhone 5 going through real testing at this point.

hmmm disappointing... I'd love to see a larger screen, Desire HD/ Evo 4g screen size is perfect... Great size for pocketable web browsing...

Oh well... iPhone 6 maybe?

or instead, the top and bottom of the iPhone will become nothing, and only the sides will be the antenna, that way you won't be able to attenuation the antenna by putting your finger between the black splits/dividers.

wasn't that the issue, by putting your finger on that 1 spot of the phone you joined the antennas together causing it to loose signal?

What the problem was, is that Human beings conduct very well, and by being physically able to touch the antenna, you are altering its length, making the antenna the wrong length for the frequency you're trying to use. Antenna's need to be certain lengths to use certain frequencies.

Two things. First, PLEASE stop predicting it will be called the 4GS. We know, almost for certain, that the phone will not be 4G. It would be more appropriate to predict 4S or 4V (V for Verizon).

Second, my theory is that the way Apple will avoid admitting the iPhone 4's antenna needed a redesign is for them to make this phone dual GSM and CDMA. That way, they could say they HAD to redesign the antenna system to accommodate a CDMA antenna, and would avoid having to say the iPhone 4 was actually flawed.

Don't hold your breath. Besides, the bigger screen would make it too chunky for smaller hands of women and little men.
