hmmm disappointing... I'd love to see a larger screen, Desire HD/ Evo 4g screen size is perfect... Great size for pocketable web browsing...

Oh well... iPhone 6 maybe?

Please, no bigger screen. The current iPhone4 fits perfect in the backpocket of my jeans - I don't want to have it any bigger. For things I need a bigger screen for I use the iPad but on the go I need something that easily fits any pocket I have (I don't want to carry a mens hand-bag for my phone)

I reckon that this is an antenna fix for iPhone 4. Surely iPhone 5 will have a fairly distinctive redesign so that in the consumers mind it is clearly separated from iPhone 4 to break the link between that form factor and the so called 'antenna-gate'.

yes and no. sounds logical - but despite the so called 'antenna-gate' the phone is selling great, even while the antenna-gate was hyped by the press, they still sold more phones than they could produce. (And when will the press stop putting a 'gate' suffix at the and of every big or small problem?)

Still the same size screen... bleh... fail. 4 inch minimum for the next gen or I wont even look at it.

It affects everyone. It has nothing to do with a device-by-device hardware flaw. It simply goes unnoticed if the current available signal strength is strong enough to survive a 20dB device attenuation. Amazing how some people still don't grasp that concept.

If I don't notice it it is not affecting me! To affect me, I have to notice it. If I don't notice it, it does not matter if it is really happening on the device since it does not affect me.

So if you don't notice the bank draining money from your bank account, you're fine with it ?=)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

...my theory is that the way Apple will avoid admitting the iPhone 4's antenna needed a redesign is for them to make this phone dual GSM and CDMA. That way, they could say they HAD to redesign the antenna system to accommodate a CDMA antenna, and would avoid having to say the iPhone 4 was actually flawed.

Absolutely.

I don't think that apple feels any pressure to redesign the look of the iphone each year. I believe that the phone's industrial design has evolved rather rapidly, to what it is today, as the material availability and antenna requirements have changed. But what I expect to happen in the future is for the industrial design changes to become less and less on each iteration. Think of the Porsche 911 as the example. It gets technology updates every so often but the look doesn't change. It's an icon, and that is where Apple wants the ice cream sandwhich iphone to become.

I do expect Apple to eventually offer different screen sizes. To sieze as much market share as possible they will need to fit more comfortably into the different hand sizes you find around the world. Maybe a small, a medium, and a large. But that's probably a couple of years away.

For now they have their hands full just building enough of a single design as they have gone international. The fewer variants you have the fewer engineering problems you encounter. The white iphone is an example of that. But once they saturate the international market with a single variant - and the industrial design has settled down to iconic status, it will be time to squeeze out the last bits of market share with different sized models.

Lets hope that all design differences aside, it comes in 16, 32 and 64Gb versions (or just makes the leap from 32 to 96 or even 128Gb).

I have a HUGE library of both music and DJ sets and I'm constantly having to sort my iPhone contents by date listened to, delete the oldest stuff and replace it with newer tunes. At least 64Gb as a minimum would mean I can pretty much fit everything that I'll want to listen to regularly without compromising.

So if you don't notice the bank draining money from your bank account, you're fine with it ?=)

Wrong analogy.
I think he's saying it doesn't affect you until the call is dropped. No dropped call,no antenna issue. And I agree. No more dropped calls here than my previous iPhones, and I've had them all.

It seems too many people are confusing this product with an iPad and hoping it becomes a larger and greater piece of hardware. The iPad has the room and size to become what you people are expecting from the iPhone.

I believe that the phone's industrial design has evolved rather rapidly, to what it is today... The fewer variants you have the fewer engineering problems you encounter.

Naturally. And of course, what can you do with the phone that will be so stunning that it needs a new casing? The iPhone is reaching a kind of perfect design and going to be in design stasis for several years as the insides merely upgrade.

We got volume, camera, interface, etc. It isn't like this thing will suddenly have knobs and dials growing out of it. Now it is all about getting the inner workings to keep ahead of the competition and be cutting edge to facilitate sales.

They should call this iPhone 4.5 just for the antenna fix.

I'm pretty sure they will NOT call this the iPhone 5. I'm guessing something like the 3Gs and this will be the 4s or some minor update signifier.

I'm guessing like the 3Gs, this will have a processor improvement, better battery (again), CMDA option, better cameras, more memory. Oh, and change the antenna layout to get rid of the Death Grip. That seems logical and I think we'll see it before the end of the month.

I'd be shocked if there would be enough there to get me to upgrade... I like the iPhone 4 I have. Works great. Although, always up for a new iOS to keep it fresh. :D

Two things. First, PLEASE stop predicting it will be called the 4GS. We know, almost for certain, that the phone will not be 4G.

Though now that HSPA+ is rebaptized "4G" by ATT, iphone 5 might well be "4G".

Makes sense to me ... I'm not an engineer, but I would think putting the antenna at the top of the phone would have made the most sense and reduced overall interference.

You're right. Putting the antenna at the top does indeed reduce hand attenuation, but it requires a large ground plane. (The ground is on the head side and protects the user, as the antenna radiates mostly away from you.)

The SAR tests on the iPhone 4 show that it radiates from the bottom, which your hand often covers. It seems to be a weird slot antenna layout, where the battery and electronics themselves act as one piece, and the bezel as another, with the space between them being the slot.

The general consensus of antenna designers seems to be that Apple didn't want to use the first type above, as it would've meant adding thickness. Form over function.

So if you don't notice the bank draining money from your bank account, you're fine with it ?=)

If I don't notice it, that would mean I have so much that I don't care - but you can be sure that I would notice it and therefor wouldn't be fine with it. Apparently I have enough signal strength where I am, so I don't care if it amount of signal strength drops with any noticeable effect.

**** you Apple! If this is the the new design it goes to show that there was a major design flaw after all. TBH there isnt going to be a new super duper design overhaul. The phone is at a stage now where its spot on however if they release this new design then be prepared to offer a trade in service for all us who bought your iphone4 in good faith but have been forced to either use a bumper or live with dropped calls.

SJ and his cronies needs a punch in the mouth as this usually helps rectify any 'I can do whatever I want and not admit liablity' tendencies. Apple seems to be getting to big for its boots, bullyesque if you like. Who the **** are they to force anyone to take anything down? How about you suck my balls (Mr Garrison) Jobs? Suck on my chocolate salty balls.

LOL!!!! Just had a thought isnt it weird that jobs actually does look like Mr Garrison from South Park! Move along nothing to see hear, there is nothing wrong with your iP4... Mmmmkay!

You had your chance to get your money back, 30 days after purchase. You choose to keep the iPhone 4. If a redesigned iPhone comes out Apple owes you nothing. Thats like buying a 2011 Ferrari, then when the 2012 model comes out saying you want a the 2011 refunded because it is not as good as the 2012.

Don't hold your breath. Besides, the bigger screen would make it too chunky for smaller hands of women and little men.

And my pocket.

Does anyone miss the days when we were actually surprised about an Apple product? These Chinese manufacturers are starting to piss me off...

Not one bit.

Though now that HSPA+ is rebaptized "4G" by ATT, iphone 5 might well be "4G".

Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing. Or by some estimates the iPhone 6 or 5s?

I'm sorry but what the hell are you talking about? The iPhone 4 WAS a major redesign. The main form of the phone has never really changed? What exactly do you want changed in the hardware? Your listed complaints are all software complaints which can all easily be changed in iOS 5. Same ringtones though? Is that really that much of a concern to you?

I agree. I don't get how anyone could say all four iPhones are the same. The 3G was very different from the original version. The 3GS sure looked the same, true. But the iPhone 4 is a radical redesign which feels like an instrument of beauty in one's hand and looks like shear perfection. In addition, it offers huge advantages over the 3GS in capabilities and performance.

While the antenna design has been seen as a failure, in reality it's much better than the 3GS in actual reception. The front facing camera and FaceTime is a gigantic leap forward in technology, and as the commercials suggest change the way we communicate with our loved ones. The addition of the rear camera LED flash, has dramatically improved the camera photo capabilities. Perhaps most incredible is the design and material improvements over the 3GS. The plastic of 3G and 3GS are incredibly cheap feeling while the iPhone 4 feels and looks like an Apple designed product of the future.

People that say the 4 isn't really different than 3GS are either being cheap (as they cannot afford, or don't want to spend the money, to upgrade) or they're blind or clueless!

I don't believe Apple should change anything in terms of exterior design of the iPhone 5, but I would like a more durable glass for the back of the 5. If Apple can improve upon the antenna performance by moving around the break points, great. Other than that, I want to see a leap to a dual core Cortex A9 chip and better graphics (just because they can). I also want to see improvements in both cameras and perhaps an LED for the front making low light FaceTime calls better. I have no other requests except the biggest one of all, I want an unlocked Qualcomm dual tech GSM/CDMA phone that can be used wherever I want on whatever carrier. I will happily shell out $850 for such a phone. I believe many others would too.

It affects everyone. It has nothing to do with a device-by-device hardware flaw. It simply goes unnoticed if the current available signal strength is strong enough to survive a 20dB device attenuation. Amazing how some people still don't grasp that concept.

Handing out free bumpers was the chosen solution because it placated customers and for the most part, the media. Eating the cost of some $0.05 bumpers is also a hell of a lot cheaper than redesigning, recalling and redistributing millions of devices. That much should be obvious to anyone. The issue is that the media blew a device flaw into a "device-killing flaw", which it wasn't. The majority of people likely live in areas saturated with signals, making the design flaw essentially a non-issue, and one mitigated enough with a bumper. End of story.

take a look here. It doesn't always go down my 20 dB in strong signal areas. Otherwise +1 i agree.

You realize the screen can be made bigger without the phone increasing in size? (at least, not vs. the first gen. iPhone 4 trimmed a bit off the sides.)

Yeah valid point there Batman. Just one problem the 2011 Ferarri didnt have any issues and the wheels didnt fall off just because I held the steering wheel with one hand therefore Im not expecting the new version for free.

The iP4 however is now regarded as one of the biggest tech failures of 2010 and indeed the telecommunications industry, Its irrelevant that its sold millions - thats just good marketing and PR by Apple and of course a blatant lie that there wasnt any issues. Every phone suffers the problem. However it will most likely be fixed for iP5.
So put that in your pipe and smoke it fanboy.

I like Apple dont get me wrong but when youre wrong - your wrong. Apple made themselves look stupid last year by not owning up to the big engineering fail and SJ stood there and lied through his back teeth telling us a ****ing sob story about how Apple just loves its customers and does everything to make them happy. Seems his silky smooth Mmmmmkay worked on you Batman. Much love and big kisses.

Sssh. Be quiet.

You had plenty of opportunity to return it for a full refund and wait for iPhone 5, which you KNEW was coming. You chose not to. Suck it up, buttercup.

This just proves (if they are legit) that the antenna problem is a real issue, otherwise the iPhone 5 would be exactly the same as the 4, but with some internal tweaks (RAM, Processor, camera update, etc).

There's a lot of 4's out there, I wonder if they plan to fix them or expect everyone to use a case.

I got my phone after it was acknowledged and at the end of the free bumper deal. I'm using the black bumper and I do get a dropped call now and then, it happens with full bars. So, I guess I could blame AT&T or the person on the other line. Who knows.
