I'm curious, I'm sure screen protectors are great for accidental scratches, but does anyone really know if they help at all for shattering due to a drop? Seems to me the same energy is still reaching the display.

I'm sure they do help by adding a layer of "absorption" to the screen. Lamination is an effective approach used to strengthen window glass, automobile glass, etc.

But you won't catch me ever applying a screen protector to my phones. I used to use them, but now it just feels unnecessary (for my use case).

It's almost as if having a slippery shape, made with a glass back, and a screen close to the edge with no shock absorption is a bad idea.

If only it were scientifically possible to design and use materials that were not to fragile and more suitable for a device one holds in the hand multiple times a day.

Oh yes, it's 100% possible, it's just we don't want to ;)

The real genius engineering would be to make a phone out of a premium materials, which is also *not slippery.* Therefore people could hold onto these fine materials, instead of holding it through $.50 worth of Chinese plastic for fear of dropping and breaking it.

And yet people want a foldable?

Edit: So do all these YT jerks drop their phones as a "test" then run to get them fixed them under AC+?
Well, foldable's inner screen is plastic...
Now that I think about it, I'd kinda love to have thr option for a platic screen.

Just use a MOUS limitless case. Been using it since iphone 8 and never ever had a cracked screen. And my phone drops 10x a week on hard surfaces :)

I haven’t used a case on my iPhone since the iPhone 6 Plus. I stopped using cases after they came out with that beautiful jet black iPhone 7. I didn’t want to cover it up, otherwise why get a jet black version? After a year of use, that thing had a few micro scratches but looking from a normal distance, it looked pristine. I have yet to break an iPhone since then without ever using a case (knock on wood). I still don’t have a case on my year-old iPhone 15 Pro Max and it doesn’t have a scratch on it. I didn’t upgrade this year. If I do eventually break one, I’ll still have saved on AppleCare I never used.

iPads, OTOH, I have broken one out of all the ones I’ve ever had. I cracked an iMac screen once when moving it when it slipped out of one hand and hit the leg of my desk. Apple replaced it for free after telling me they’d charge $75 for the repair! Overall, I take care of my stuff and only ever needed AppleCare once, though I didn’t have it.

From the jerry rig video, the 16 isn't any more scratch resistant than previous models.
Surprise surprise; it's not any more shatter resistant either.

You always needed a case so a dropped iPhone doesn‘t shatter. That didn‘t change in all the years.

What did change: Since about 2 years you also need a screen protector if you don‘t want deep scratches - which was never necessary!

You always had some light scratches after a while but they were not visible if the screen was on. But on my last 2 iPhones I had deep visible scratches - although I was very careful.

Scratches on the screen is a much more serious problem starting from the iPhone 15 series. I wish Apple made the iPhone 16 screen more resistant to scratches.
I mean, really!?

Glass is either more scratch resistant (and therefore more prone to shatter) or more shatter resistant (and therefore more prone to scratches). It’s a trade off. I hate scratches on my devices more than the next guy, and I get a sapphire screen watch for that reason. However, I would much rather have my phone scratch that shatter and cost me hundreds to fix.

If Apple designed for scratch resistance everyone would whine that Apple just wants that sweet sweet repair bill income when they always shattered.

I for one prefer the way they are leaning.

My iPhone shattered when falling out of my trousers pocket on the street. There was a tiny stone on the street and the display fell flat on it. Glas is glas….
Will always use screen protectors now.

So get a screen protector. Which can also help to reduce the risk of the screen shattering when the phone is dropped. I'd much rather buy replacement protectors than have to pay for more expensive phone repairs or replacements, or put up with a permanently scratched screen.

Maybe Apple could offer a cut-price AC+ for those of us who always use a case?

And a further discount if we use a case with automatically deploying helium balloon/parachute/shock absorbers?

Funny that a device insurer posts a drop test video where it immediately shatters... Of course they set the height at a point that's unrealistic for most daily drops and would require some odd accident like falling through the railings of a set of stairs.

WOW SO STRANGE.

I will say though that I enjoy JerryRigEverything's video as he goes a bit into the possible device construction techniques being used. Much more interesting.

The best way to make it "safer" to drop, is if the device's weight was very light.

Yeah obviously. But previous iPhones didn’t need it. Now it’s absolutely necessary.
