I mean, really!?

Glass is either more scratch resistant (and therefore more prone to shatter) or more shatter resistant (and therefore more prone to scratches). It’s a trade off. I hate scratches on my devices more than the next guy, and I get a sapphire screen watch for that reason. However, I would much rather have my phone scratch that shatter and cost me hundreds to fix.

If Apple designed for scratch resistance everyone would whine that Apple just wants that sweet sweet repair bill income when they always shattered.

I for one prefer the way they are leaning.
For the past 15 years I broke my screen exactly once. I think the trade-off is not worth it for me.

Scratch resistance vs crack resistance is always a battle. Just look at the Apple Watch… glass gets scratched easily but is better at crack resistance than sapphire. Sapphire is very scratch resistant but fragile and can crack much easier.

I know first hand how fragile they are. I don't use a case and the results can be ugly sometimes....

Call me paranoid, but I don’t think anyone in the industry has a motivation for making something more durable.

The glass is thin and cheap to produce. And they can charge a premium price for either AC+ (or similar insurances) or changing the glass when broken. Why would they ever want to change that? I bet there’s a higher profit in keeping things as is instead of doing serious research in something more durable.

Cheapest option for the consumer is a good case that protrudes well above the glass front and cameras at the back. In my experience AC is just giving them more money.

Despite Apple marketing department trying their best to put tons of fancy misleading adjectives before their products year after year, actual physics still rules the world, not superficial marketing terms.

Apple thought adding a ”ceramic shield” would make it less likely to break? Porcelain is famous for its unbreakableness.

Since the topic is about the display, here is something curious.

Apple accessories guidelines has updated their iPhone 16 series and the 16 Pro has a small design detail difference from the rest. The top and bottom bezels measure 1.41 millimeters, while the left and right bezels are slightly wider at 1.44 millimeters, marking a tiny difference of just 0.03 millimeters. This is the first time in Apple’s history of full-screen iPhones that the bezel widths aren’t uniform, making the iPhone 16 Pro asymmetrical. Weird that it only the 16 Pro though. But only 0.03 millimeters is too small for human eye to notice a difference

• iPhone 16: 2.275mm (top, bottom, left, and right)
• iPhone 16 Plus: 2.275mm (top, bottom, left, and right)
• iPhone 16 Pro: 1.41mm (top and bottom), 1.44mm(left and right)
• iPhone 16 Pro Max: 1.36mm (top, bottom, left, and right)

Scratches on the screen is a much more serious problem starting from the iPhone 15 series. I wish Apple made the iPhone 16 screen more resistant to scratches.
ceramic shields, titanium, gorilla and godzilla glasses etc etc, still, add a screen protector and put it into a bumper

put it into a bumper and add a screen protector, no matter the marketing BS because once it breaks you will need to give a kidney to repair it unless you had the Apple Care which is not cheat as well

Sure, but it is the reduction in scratch resistance that’s often ignored or overshadowed by the enhanced shatter resistance. The average consumer may not know that they are inversely related.

I remember that Steve Jobs put the prototype original iPhone in his pocket with his keys and the (plastic) screen was scratched up like crazy - that’s exactly why gorilla glass was developed in the first place - to prevent scratches.

👆why I always get the SE, it’s still somewhat repairable. But I’m seriously thinking about switching to a Fairphone next time. I’m tired of worrying about super expensive repairs. I can take a small feature downgrade if it gets me easy, cheap repairs. The only thing holding me in Apple’s garden is the watch.

Better get a case and a screen protector.
Breaking and scratching of the iPhone will always happen at some point. I aways get a case and screen shield. I guess users worry about the aesthetic comprise. I really don't understand this. Without protection your phone will be damaged to some degree.

You people using cases are just asking for it.

Do NOT go out into the world with your expensive-@ss iPhone without using TWO cases like I have always done. First case absorbs most of the impact and interior case guarantees you're up and ready to go. Two screen protectors, obviously.

What do people expect for christ sake!, glass is glass and it breaks. Make it 100x stronger and it's still going to break.
A phone which has not, stupidly, a back made out of glass? A lot of people would not hide their iPhones in protective cases, if they weren't so brittle. The weight also contributes to the drop-vulnerability and thermal condictivity of glass is also pretty bad. The obly advantage of glass vs metal is, that it lets through signals (so does plastic) and that it's shiny. Alas, using glass is not the best design-choice, acording to Jobs' "design is how it works" adage.

Btw, Samsung's new glass seems to be more robust.

Scratches on the screen is a much more serious problem starting from the iPhone 15 series. I wish Apple made the iPhone 16 screen more resistant to scratches.

Then they'd have to pass on the In-Store install of the Belkin Screen Force. I always see people having it installed on a new phone when I'm in my local Brick and Mortar. Just another money maker.
