It makes sense for me at least. I always get packages early afternoon, and in the morning a FedEx truck goes by, and they've told me the same in the past. So don't feel like you won't get it.. because most likely , even more than most like you will.

Same boat:
Was at local facility since 3:00am.
Was slightly heartbroken when I woke up and didn't see it on a truck. Still holding out hope that Fedex.com sucks (like it has for the past 3 days) and that it'll get on a truck today.
Mine is in Kansas City, MO also, same status but mine says will be delivered by noon today so I will find out in couple or hours, gonna go home at noon and see if they left it.
Update.. My phone was just delivered 10:56AM and FedEx site still shows:

IT'S HERE! FEDEX just dropped mine off and I am SOOO excited! Delivery date was slated for tomorrow!!!
Mine also says destination sort facility, just called the number given in this thread and was told that it was out on the road for delivery!
To my fellow Massachusetts people stuck in Franklin:
Good news! Called Fedex at 1800-455-4588 and the lady said it was on the van for delivery! Call that number, not the regular one. Much nicer reps!

Lady was so nice......... so so nice...... she asked if i got this number from a blog, i said yes and she laughed. They usually do not field calls for first level calls but she was nice enough to do a few tracking numbers for me . All on a truck for delivery even though they show at a sort facility online.

but please, please, PLEASE also state if delivery estimate was today or tomorrow. This is an important distinction. In other words, if the estimate was that it would be delivered today, but last update was at a sort facility it's no real shocker that it showed up. However, if it's at a sort facility AND the estimated delivery still shows the 24th, then I think that's a small miracle.
