I'm hoping it's mostly greyscale and very minimalist.

I'm growing tired of the way iOS looks after almost six years of using it. If Apple doesn't show something different and impressive at WWDC, I might jump ship. That HTC One is looking nice. Never thought I'd say such a thing.

Gray scale? Really? And we've come so far from that... ;-)

One thing that I hope, which given my comments might seem odd, I REALLY hope that animated icons do not come into IOS EVER! They suck, they suck, they suck!

I hope they're placing just as much emphasis on overhauling the functional experience as they are the look-and-feel.

iOS was great in its day. But with new form factors arriving since its inception and devices creeping up in power and capabilities, iOS has supplanted OSX on laptops and desktops for many of us. Unfortunately, iOS is painfully inefficient for the type of every day tasks we now ask of it.

I really do need to run apps on top of others so that I can reference them at the same time. This seems like a major overhaul for the way multitasking works now. And simple things like enabling VPN require far too many clicks per session.

If they don't include quick settings, then I don't care about any of the other features I will not buy an iPhone.

Oh my god why best the most fantastic mobile OS?

Windows 8 looks ****... more of the same? Christ

So let me see if I understand this new 'flat' idea. Apple is now planning to move away from a 3D layout, and into 2D? Just when we have the technology to make 3D look amazing on such a tiny little screen?

iOS 7

To be honest, it seems like Apple doesn't want to do much. Alot of people use the "you don't need to fix something if it ain't broke" approach to analyzing Apple's new products, but honestly their products are getting old. When you look at companies like HTC and Samsung, and I'll admit that I've never used an android phone, currently have a 4S, those companies really seem to try and improve their products more incrementally. If Apple is going to choose to stay with the design of the iPhone 5, thats fine, but then they need to really work on the OS. The iOS updates really haven't been anything great over the past couple of years, it seems like they're just adding features that have clearly been missing, nothing that is really new when you look at what Android phones offer. I've been reviewing the HTC One and Galaxy S4 recently, and they offer everything that the iPhone does, and more. There really isn't anything that the iPhone can do that they can't, and for me, a consumer, when I look to spend my money I want to make my dollars go as far as they can, and when looking at these phones and the iPhone, it does not make ANY sense to buy something that doesn't offer the most, of anything. The one thing that Android has seemed to lack from the iPhone has been fluidity, but my friends I believe those days are over. Go watch some reviews of the HTC One and you'll see that it is just as smooth, mainly due to an advanced chipset, one that perhaps doesn't work quite as close with the OS as iOS and apple chips do, but that no longer matters because they're so powerful. Right now, the only thing that Apple has going is its ecosystem and the design of smaller phones. But companies like Samsung are not only releasing flagships, but also flagship "mini's". And as far as design goes, the HTC One I would say actually beats the iPhone 5 in terms of design. It has an aluminum back, one that reminds me of the original iPhone, and its also curved, making it very comfortable in the hand. I'll admit that the camera on the One is not all that impressive, but it's nice to see a company trying new innovation versus adding more megapixels like Apple and Samsung seem to do every year. So, all in all, I just wanted to say that Apple REALLY needs to kick things up a notch with iOS 7. I think it would be smart for them to develop a more advanced OS that is better used by people who are tech savy, and also have the original OS that stays simple and easy to use for everyday users.

I will say: Nooooooooooooooo to flat design, it the worse thing that happened to 3D GUI.

Did you know that the volume knob in the music app changes its "reflection" if you move the phone/ipod around?

I hope we don't lose that when we go 2D with iOS 7.

THAT is exactly the type of stuff that Ive is likely going after. So much time spent on that and then there was a huge wifi bug. Not good

Considering its been the same since 2007 ehhh its about time, ya think. Besides OSX is flat and I don't hear anyone crying over it.

I really hope they don't remove the page turning in iBooks. If they do, they might as well rename it. The word "book" is itself skeumorphic. iTextReader will do.

I'm just hoping for a snappier safari :D:D /s

But seriously I hope iOS 7 beats the living out of Android...

Also improve on battery life, iOS 6.1.3 is killing my Li-Ion Polymer pack of electrons faster than the speed of light.

Indeed. I'd be happy if I could just get another level of folders... (And NO animated icons! Doesn't the Windows 8 phone in-your-face have animated icons? Just say NO!)

No, the Windows Phone 8 doesn't have animated icons. It does have live tiles but no animated icons. The live tiles simply display information such as weather (current temp, 5-day forecast, etc), messages, that sort of thing. So you don't have to open the app to see the top level info. Perhaps you're thinking about the Pictures hub that can rotate pics from your album?

I'm curious...why??

If you like the iPhone ...great!

If you don't like the iPhone...also OK.

I don't understand why it has to kick the whatever out of Android.

Is esthetics a zero sum game??

I like skeuomorphism. I like the texture. It makes things look interesting. It's not a matter of familiarity, it's about esthetics. I think flat square blocks are not a rip off of Windows8, no, this goes back to Commodore and Apple 2 games. Even Mac OS-6 had a more interesting desktop than Windows8 and co. Square blocks remind me of the old 8-bit gaming days. I just don't understand why the industry is going back there.

I don't think it's just about esthetics.
It's about placemaking which is really important on a on device that you are using in situations that you need to be easily distracted. The risk of going flat graphics is ,like windows8, you lose that place making and all apps just bleed in to each other. This is bad for users and developers.

If Apple do a design that is flat and still has good placemaking references and good app branding then it could be really amazing. Yet even getting that to work across Apples own stable of apps and leave enough design scope for the Developers so they don't ending up always seeming out of place is incredibly hard.

Ahh. I interpreted the 'live tiles' as icons. On that note, I would like the Weather icon to show what the weather is going to be in the near future. Not animated, but more like the (is it the calendar icon) that shows the current date. iPhone not handy to check, but that would be acceptable. Just no animated icons. I had a Nokia that drove me crazy because everything (most of the icons) were animated. Talk about wasting resources...

...
There was great advances in hardware and software from the iPhone 2g to iPhone 3G and from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 4, but from there it's basically...well...stopped.
I'm not saying there hasn't been any progress (their has), but the competition is now leading innovation, not Apple and this had been their forté for the past 20 years.

Let's see — iPhone4 to 5:
Way, way faster processor. Bigger screen. Way better camera. HD video recording. Siri. Slimmer. Lighter. 4G. 802.11n. EarPods. Lightning connector (yes, I'm a fan). Etc.

I seriously can not see that "the competition is now leading innovation" based on truckloads of new, flashy, gimmicky features (wow, but I'll never use it). But then, I am admittedly a strong believer in simplicity and "Less is more".
