Wow, it looks beautiful! I'm looking forward to the release of iOS 7 already.

I really hope it will look something like the Windows Mobile UI.

God no!!!!!!

Ugh!

This is about bringing Ive's minimalist hardware design philosophy (the same philosophy he's had since the first Aluminum MacBook) to the software. It's not about piggybacking on popular trends.

And obviously, iOS 7 will be more than just a theme change...

I'm not sure I'm looking forward to this. Apple's software already gets way too minimalist in functions. I mean check out the calendar/tasks app both on iOS and the mac. They lost basic functions to make it as minimal as possible. I can't even set how long I want the sleep button to function for. So if I get a reminder my only options are to tell it never to remind me again or get reminded every 15 minutes. It's ridiculous. And that's just one example (their calendar app and every "improvement" they make is a great example of apple way over doing the minimalist attitude. hell, every improvement they make to the calendar/task app is to take away functionality. Next thing you know, you won't even be able to set a date for the task/function... sure some exageration but not that far from some of the stupid functionality I've seen them take away as an improvement).

No way man. He'll bring the ship down faster than you can blink.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the guy. It really gets under my skin though how they compare him to Steve Jobs.

There's a reason why Steve himself gave Jonny superpowers @ apple and not Scotty, and I'm sure glad he did that.

Actually Scott was a Senior Vice President since 2003, so he had some powers ) Ive had superpowers only at hardware design and in this area he's genius. But while Ive was designing the first revolutionary iMac, Forstall was designing the revolutionary Aqua UI. Scott was with Steve since NEXT and he had superpowers in UI design. He's "the father" of Aqua and iOS, the key non-hardware things for the success of Apple. It's a big mistake to fire him. I don't like skeuomorphic apps like Notifications in iOS and iCal and Address Book in OS X, these ones were a bit too much. But everything else was a great, genius work.

Without Johnatan Ive AND Scott Forstall Apple probably wouldn't had this success and these brilliant products.

Forstall was not an SVP since 2003. He was first listed on Apple's executive page in June or July 2008 (I can't find an archive page of the exact date). Ive was first listed as an SVP on Apple's website in April 2006, although according to Walter Isaccson's Jobs bio Ive was reporting to Jobs even before Rubenstien left the company. Also in Isaacson's book Jobs said Ive had more operational power than anyone else at the company except for himself. He said the way he set it up there was no one who could tell Ive to butt out or what to do. There's a reason Ive is still with the company and Forstall is not.

I'm curious...why??

If you like the iPhone ...great!

If you don't like the iPhone...also OK.

I don't understand why it has to kick the whatever out of Android.

Is esthetics a zero sum game??

One word....

Competition.......

Wiki says "He was promoted to Senior Vice President in January 2003".
And that reason is Tim Cook. And that was a wrong decision.

So iOS is going to turn into a boring blob of black, grey, and white. Flat as in paper, I get it!

I thought so too, as windows falls flat on it's face with this design.

But then I looked at the WWDC logo which itself is very very flat.

It's beautiful. This alone changed my view on the new interface.

I'm not sure why people are so worried about the look of iOS 7. I mean, this is Apple. There is a very high probability that it'll look fantastic.

Yeah we can bet this is a clue. The coloured bands are stacked icons (hence the shape), and the pink background may be (one of? the?) new default background.

They do look much flatter. I think it's going to be a hit - very much keeping what people like about iOS.

Wikipedia isn't always right you know.

Here's an archived version of Apple's executive page from 2003 - 2007. Bertrand Serlet is listed as SVP of software engineering. Scott Forstall is not listed at all. Surely if he was a SVP he would be listed on this page, no?

Not sure where that pinkish/purpleish background came from, but I think the logo looks best against white. Though I don't think iOS background will be white.

That's a smart idea, wow. Good work.

For what it's worth - your dad isn't alone. And this is exactly the type of discussion point I bring up when people try to reuse Apple's marketing spin "it just works."

If that were true - there wouldn't be lines at the genius bar nor would Apple have classes at the Apple store on how to use iDevices.
Wait, because it doesn't always "just work", that means it's untrue?

Quite simply, Apple products "just work" factor is well above the industry average. In fact, they are rarely not in first place in that regard.

Sure, there are always going to be counter-examples, there are always going to be people that don't need extra help, etc. But that doesn't disprove anything, it just sets the framework within which it exists.

Everything has a learning curve.
Exactly. Given that you wrote those words, it's a shame you don't seem to grasp their implication. Nothing in the universe of complex things humans use "just works". But there's a continuum of "just workiveness" along which things exist, and Apple is almost always at the good end of that continuum.

Yes, everything has a learning curve. But not everything has the same learning curve, and that makes all the difference in the world.

Why are you always so grumpy?

I'm sure you are not alone. But there are a lot of people who have used other platforms and realize how outdated iOS is. iOS is no longer as cool as it once was. Like it or not that is a issue for Apple long term.

I totally agree that iOS is not as cool as it used to when it was the only sherif in town. And I have tryed Android too (for 8 months with samsung galaxy 2S) I did like the fact that you could do more stuff (non of which it would be a deal breaker for me) with it and I hated the fact that it did run no where as smooth as iOS and I had so many issues with both device and OS. Things have changed somehow now with Android. HTC one looks like a cool device and it would be my choice if I had to leave iPhone. But right now I will wait and see what Apple comes up with on the next few months.

Other than those who are eager to criticize, Apple can deliver just about anything and be praised as though its the best thing ever. The iPad mini was heavily bashed until it was released. Then the predictable happened. It was universally loved, praised & doted on by the great majority.

The moral of the story is nothing means anything until the product is in the hands of the Apple Faithful. At that point the bragging fawning & gushing over its style begins. It's a pattern that is well known, well practiced & often repeated. With what seems to be a well accepted routine Apple only has to replicate it time after time.

The first idea is really nice, and just welcoming and bright enough but not TOO cartoony. My only issue with that is the complete lack of depth, which I don't think Apple would go for. I don't see drop shadows going anywhere, I think Apple's version of 'flat' will be much closer to Google's 'almost flat' approach with very minimal gradients and shadows only when necessary. I wish Apple could've launched the Google Now-esque UI first, it lends itself perfectly to Apple hardware.

I think the Twitter icon is a great approach, and seems most likely to be something Apple would adapt. Maybe a little less aliased, as I think sometimes overly sharp images on the retina display tend to look a bit cheesy.

That last image is nearly perfect, for me. The slight grey highlights on the dark UI that adds depth to all the buttons are such a nice touch The keyboard alone is just a dream come true. I hope someone makes that keyboard into something skinnable for iOS 7 someday.

Maybe 'flat' will be 'layered'? They could easily implement face tracking to give a pseudo 3D look quite effectively. Not that I'm on the side of 3D, but just to illustrate that there are design elements and decisions other than it just 'being flat'.
