Developer Apparently Reports Updating Application for iPhone OS 4.0

CNET reports that it has received an e-mail from a "prominent" iPhone application developer noting that the developer's application has been updated for iPhone OS 4.0, implying that Apple has already delivered an early version of the updated operating system and development tools into the hands of select developers.
iPhone OS 4.0 is imminent. At least, that's the only conclusion I can draw from an e-mail I just received from a prominent app developer.

The message includes the following snippet: "Just wanted to give you a heads up that we've submitted an updated app for the new iPhone OS 4.0 software."

In the past two years, Apple has held March media events introducing iPhone OS updates and providing tools to allow developers to implement the new features included in the revisions ahead of the public launches of the new operating systems in June or July. Apple has, however, offered demos of applications running on the new operating systems at these March events, indicating that select developers had been provided even earlier access to development tools for the new iPhone OS versions.

One wildcard in the development of iPhone OS 4.0 may be Apple's tablet device, which has been rumored to be at least based on iPhone OS and is expected to be introduced later this month. A report from earlier this month indicated that Apple may be preparing to launch a beta version of iPhone OS 4.0 at this month's rumored media event. A separate report earlier this week claimed that the tablet does in fact run on the iPhone OS kernel and that the inclusion of tablet-related code in the latest iPhone OS versions has precluded Apple from offering any new software updates for the iPhone recently.

Sketchy evidence of iPhone OS 4.0 appeared in Boy Genius Report's browser logs in mid-December, although such data is easily faked. Soon after, an entry for iPhone OS 4.0 appeared in a developer's analytics data.

Probably just so Apple can "demo" his app at their media event.

Doesn't mean iPhone OS 4.0's release is imminent, and I wouldn't have thought it would be any significance to the iSlate either (even if it is rumoured to run the iPhone OS kernel..).
 
I woke up this morning expecting to read more rumors about the tablet and all I get is this lousy iPhone OS 4.0 rumor. ;)
 
I can definitely see the event being a demo of iPhone OS4 followed by a one more thing: "This tablet runs it too" cue the angelic fanfare and the room falls into worship at his Steveness' feet as he reveals the tablet.
 
disappointing..

if this app made it through the review process and got published, it would mean that the differences between the 3.0 and 4.0 software couldn't be that dramatic :(
 
Good News. The confirms that the tablet will be running iPhone OS. I am hopeful for

128GB of storage.

SDHC Support
802.11n Support
3G Option with the option not to get it at all.
Camera on the front for Web and on the back to take photos
Price sub $900

That could be true, and watch Apple's stock tank. I would think it would be better not to say anything now with all the rumors rather than talk about another iPhone update.

The other possible option is a new Touch with a camera and new OS, which is also lame...to announce now.

If the tablet is as big a deal to Steve Jobs and Apple as the iPhone, it’ll likely take up an entire event to itself similar to the Macworld ’07 keynote.

Also, all past iPhone OS previews have been held at Cupertino in March with a final preview at WWDC.
 
Even if developers have gotten a beta version of iPhone OS 4.0, this does not mean the software is imminent. Last year, iPhone OS 3.0 was officially announced quite a while before it made it into the hands of consumers.
 
Just give iPhone OS users a good reliable update. I don't care if it's version 3.1.3 or whatever, just give us good updates.
 
While I don't think the 4.0 release is "imminent" it does seem like we've been on 3.1.2 for quite some time. I could also see the hold-off on any updates if the rumored iSlate is running an iPhone kernel due to the fact we'd see evidence of said device. I can't wait to see what unfolds.. :)
 
Yea, well I guess all developers don't get it.

It must only be the big developers that are getting a look at it.
 
"iPhone OS Kernel" means nothing. The iPhone's kernel is XNU/Mach, the same as the Mac OS X kernel. Did you really expect the tablet wouldn't run SOME variant of OS X? They would all use XNU, there's no reason for Apple to switch kernels at this point.

Also, I don't know how Apple picks these things, but I'm a developer and I don't have 4.0.

Then I guess you'll not be buying one then. The iphone's system to manage the applications with the AppStore is a success for Apple no way they are going to change that.

As for multitasking well that's a possibility, people want a phone to always just work, but a tablet maybe that's more acceptable to run a little "slow" when too many things are open.

Hope they've fixed the performance issues on the iPhone 3G.... but they probably didn't. Not going to hold my breath.

I have no problem staying on 2.2.1 forever if I have to.

Sandboxing is a tradeoff between system safety and application power. Protection of your phone's resources by sandboxing (and maybe by the app approval process) is a key feature of the iPhone/iPhone OS/App Store model. Mac OS X takes the other approach, requiring an administrator password for certain installation and system-related actions but otherwise staying out of the way. Web browsers have their own sandboxes for executable code/scripts. The question remains what approach Apple will use (or should use) for a tablet based on iPhone OS 4.0.

Time for SDXC, not older SDHC. 64GB SDXC cards were shown at CES. SDXC can grow to 2TB, SDHC is maxed out at 32GB.

I haven't seen SDXC in any laptops yet (please correct me if there are some), so Apple could pull off a first here.

Exactly why I think when we finally do see multitasking, don't expect it to be available to older iPhone models. They will limit it to the newer, speedier versions the same way video is limited to the gs.

Why do you have an iPhone if you are not taking advantage of the features of the iphone? no AppStore, no exchange support, ics support, etc.

Why would there be support for a Mouse when you have a multitouch display!?!?!!!

Dude, make your own tablet then :p That way you can get what you want and you won't be disappointed.

By saying that you won't settle for anything less than blah blah blah you're likely to be let down by what's delivered.

I'm holding off on my Macbook Pro purchase until the announcement about the next generation of laptops is made. My old Powerbook G4 will last a little while longer.
