I'm tired of the iTablet's rumors and next gen iPhone OS. I want a new Macbook Pro! :)
At least for now, the iSlate (or iTablet, or whatever...) is completely useless for me.. specially if it costs more then $600.
And my iPhone is running smooth with the 3.1.2.

I won't be able the have a $1200 notebook + a $1000 tablet. It doesn't make any sense.

But I need a new Macbook Pro. I sold my old one in the beginning of Jan and I'm forced to use a HP desktop with Windows Vista!!! OMG. It's terrible. :(

:(

I will not settle for anything less than multitasking and no more sandboxing of apps.

sandboxing of apps? what does that mean? i'm totally onboard with multi-tasking, but i get the feeling it will not come to the iPhone but to the tablet which will be awesome, cant wait to play some of my (well hopefully play) apps on a bigger screen :)

Bring on the LAG!

Hope they've fixed the performance issues on the iPhone 3G.... but they probably didn't. Not going to hold my breath.

I have no problem staying on 2.2.1 forever if I have to.

Why do you have an iPhone if you are not taking advantage of the features of the iphone? no AppStore, no exchange support, ics support, etc.

PLEASE don't get him started....

Mobility Space

OOOOH Burned! No tablet on the 26th. "Mobility space" refers to iPhone OS 4.0 & possibly next gen iPhone...

I'm guessing "mobility space" could mean:

1) brief mention of Macbook Pros and Air with newer processors

2) iWork.com and MobileMe get upgrades and new capabilities. Maybe demonstrate new features from Lala acquisition.

3) iPhone 4.0 with key new features demoed, and announcement of SDK.

One more thing

4) iSlate tablet(s)

Exactly why I think when we finally do see multitasking, don't expect it to be available to older iPhone models. They will limit it to the newer, speedier versions the same way video is limited to the gs.

I still say the best reason to believe that the tablet will probably have multi task available to 3rd parties is that it seems very logical, to me anyway, that iPhone apps will be able to be run at their iPhone resolution like widgets on the tablet. And for that to make the most sense, it would need multi tasking to allow moer than one app on the screen at a time.

I am probably just setting myself up for disappointment though. But that is my 2 cents.

2.2.1 has native exchange support, has the App Store and some other features. If the phone works fine for his uses, why mess with it? There will always be people who stay several versions behind. Then there are those who want to run the latest beta build of anything, like me.

Then I guess you'll not be buying one then. The iphone's system to manage the applications with the AppStore is a success for Apple no way they are going to change that.

I have an iPhone 3G.

Am I missing something? Is it too much too much to take an email, edit it in DocsToGo/Quickoffice and email it again?

As for multitasking well that's a possibility, people want a phone to always just work, but a tablet maybe that's more acceptable to run a little "slow" when too many things are open.

Really? Multitasking is too difficult for Apple when every other smartphone can do it? I haven't heard about consistent crashing of either the Pre or Android.

This fanboyism is starting to get ridiculous. It's amazing that people will set expectations for Apple to be so low.

Do you want to know how well multiasking works on a jailbroken 3GS using multifl0w. Read this:

Performance

I started out running 6-7 apps for a while – things like Evernote, Things, Tweetie, Newsstand, Mail, 1Password, and Analytics App. Zero noticeable lag, slowdown, or performance hit.

Battery Life

I can say that in the first hour and ten minutes of heavy usage, with 10-12 apps running most of the time, my battery percentage dropped by 15%.

Why do you have an iPhone if you are not taking advantage of the features of the iphone? no AppStore, no exchange support, ics support, etc.

1. I have the App Store. Nothing really excites me on the App Store now-a-days anyways.

2. I have native Exchange support. I can use google's exchange server to push emails to my iPhone using the native Mail app on 2.2.1

3. I'm using my iPhone 3G as a go-phone. That means I don't have a data plan so I blocked data from my phone. That also means I can't send or receive MMS.

4. I do almost all of my web browsing from a computer.

5. My iPhone is used for phone calls and texting. Very basic stuff now-a-days.

6. I'm saving a ton of money buy switching to AT&T go-phone and I can have a more interactive life now with my girlfriend and my friends because I'm not consumed in my phone.

7. With no data coming or going on my iPhone, I can't receive push notifications either... unless I'm on wifi, but I don't care. I hardly use my iPhone anymore anyways.

If 4.0 works better than 3.0, I'll upgrade, but if it's the same old crap, I'll stay on 2.2.1 where it's faster and more suited for my lifestyle.

Edit: What is ICS support?

sandboxing of apps? what does that mean?:)

Apps on the iPhone are closed. For example you cannot take a document in one 3rd party app and use it in another 3rd party app. It stays within the app. Loopy workarounds have been created but it's not a satisfactory solution.

we can only hope that its a netflix 'watch my instant queue' app that works over 3g. a man can dream.

if this app made it through the review process and got published, it would mean that the differences between the 3.0 and 4.0 software couldn't be that dramatic :(

Dude, it doesn't mean anything. He didn't publish a new app, he submitted an updated build which mean he may have just got the app resized for higher resolution but it doesn't mean it already took advantage of all the new code. Apple is not going to release an SDK that require substantial code rewriting, every application pre-4.0 will work fine on 4.0 with a minor code revision, just like the 2.0>3.0 process.

The iPhone needs a general file storage space... like a mobile Finder. There's already Photos.app that has photos and videos, but what about text files, audio files etc.?

I think it would be nifty if third party apps could access this Finder storage area to edit and save files and it would even be greatly helpful for uploading photos in MobileSafari for forums and stuff.

This all makes sense. iPhone OS is the core of OSX, the stuff which does stuff, plus a different presentation layer on top (UIKit) which gives a tailored UI for that particular device. All the rest is the same, we have most of CoreFoundation, most of the NS classes, recently they added Core Data, my expectation for 4.0 would be to add the rest of their core technologies, bindings, Grand Central Dispatch (please), GC (hmm perhaps not on the phone) and an enhanced UIKit which has similar look to the NS widgets, or a restricted set thereof, but different hooks for whatever the input method is going to be. 90% of your application (if you wrote it right, if you used the MVC patterns Apple has been pushing for years) will just work, you'll need to write a new presentation layer for it and you won't have to make too many compromises to do it.

The first apps will be iPhone apps up-ported for the iThing, following right on behind will be the OS X apps you know and love with new UIs doing the same good things they did before, using the whatever-interface-for-driving-apps Apple has come up with. I'm expecting UIKit++ because that really is designed for touch and screen-driven apps.

I'm looking forward to 4.0 .. a lot.

Lies, Apple only releases one thing per event! They always have! lol

Actually you are not right. They can even release that kind of Applications now already and once the OS, or Hardware supports some new features they just appear, or start to work for the user.
Obj-C is a very dynamic language. There are even a lot of code samples for that from the 2.0 − 3.0 switch online.

Why would there be support for a Mouse when you have a multitouch display!?!?!!!
Because if you're using a keyboard (Bluetooth or wired), it would make more sense to have a mouse or other pointing device, rather than have to bring you hand up to the screen.

Also, a mouse can have finer control in some situations (e.g., photo editing).

Adding external mouse support is probably trivial in any case.

?

its possible but again this is getting to hyped up and everyone is going to be dissapointed when nothing is introduced

:apple: i-c

How many of my Apple brethren believe that an app will be made for the Apple tablet that will put the MS surface to shame? In 12 days brothers and sisters the 2nd coming of the lord will be upon us.
SAVE THAT TAX RETURN!!!!!!!!!!
ALL HELL IS ABOUT TO BREAK LOOSE UP IN THIS MOFO YALL!!!!!!

That could be true, and watch Apple's stock tank. I would think it would be better not to say anything now with all the rumors rather than talk about another iPhone update.

The other possible option is a new Touch with a camera and new OS, which is also lame...to announce now.

Each time Rumours build of the tablet stock prices skyrocket.

You'd think poeple would be smarter than to buy stock with rumours as a base.

If the tablet is as big a deal to Steve Jobs and Apple as the iPhone, it’ll likely take up an entire event to itself similar to the Macworld ’07 keynote.

Also, all past iPhone OS previews have been held at Cupertino in March with a final preview at WWDC.

The iPhone shared a stage with Apple TV at Macworld '07.

Multi-tasking has been available on jailbroken iPhones for a while now with the backgrounder (or some such name) application. Truthfully, I'm fairly certain Apple has plans for releasing background tasks just as they had roadmapped cut/copy/paste. It's a business model. Whenever any new product is developed most companies map out the direction of the product for at least three years, five to be safe. Apple has been slowly releasing "new features" in order to keep consumer interest in their product. All businesses do it, however Apple is aware that even a "crippled" product will gain momentum if the product is impressive enough and the loyal fan base drives interest and sales.

A fairly likely time frame for this year is:

27 Jan. Release general tablet plans and OS upgrade plans. Release SDK and developer hardware for tablets. PowerMac ships

March 2010. Release TOS4 and V1.0 large 10" tablet. MacBookPro ships

April 2010. Release iPhone 4th year more than a month early since engineering is fully evolved on it. TOS4.0.1

Evolved Airport base station with internal AppleTV and CD, HD ships. ISP's offer discounts on new bundled installs, possibly with internal modem cards. "All-in-one finally arrives to broadband." LTE for backup service during interruptions. Dual channel 802.11n allows 3D content streaming/forwarding. Mesh repeater 2 packs.

June 2010. WWDC. TOS4.1 and release smaller 7" Tablet which will be positioned as a "Purse format", "remote control", PC remote access, educational target, cosmetics mirror, device. It will remain constrained supply well close to Christmas. It will be bundled with cosmetics at retail, and come in cute colors.

September 2010. Hardware rev to 2.0 10" tablet.
