Wrong. 4K doesn't require cumbersome, expensive "special" glasses to view or get you dizzy or nauseous when watching. Maybe both are impractical on a small screen but no way is higher resolution media "sillier" than 3D.

It requires standing very close to the TV or buying a TV so large you can't afford it.

Once you go sit down it looks like 1080p.

... with 4K and HDR still being ironed out I would rather buy a $150 device this year, and another $150 device in a year or two that has 4k support ...
Apple is doing a great job keeping the entry price really low as they stealth their way into displacing both the channel selecting cable TV box and higher priced console.

IMO, the watershed event for Apple TV is when major video game titles port to Apple TV. For 2015, it'll be the land rush but by this time next year, major players will have titles out. Like to see if they have 4K chips on this unit but did not enable it yet. The eventual teardowns will show the chip-sets in a week.

Sorry that you have middle-age/senior eyes... The difference is very noticeable to me in my HT setup that has me 8 feet from the screen. Samsung has a UHD 75" set for $3500. That's not unaffordable for the Macrumors crowd here that can afford to upgrade rMBP/rMB/iphones/ipads every year without breaking a sweat.

This new Apple TV feels like the 720p ATV2 that was released when 1080p was already too common.

This Apple TV will be great with the new APP Store! The only problem is the lack of 4K at 60 Hz because the HDMI v 1.4 spec will be able to do 4K at 30Hz.

Like others I was wondering why Apple dropped the optical port. However I have come to the realization that one could just use the optical out on my TV to my 5.1 Receiver that has an optical port in so to me that is not a problem.

HDMI carries video and audio. Is optical a higher def way of carrying audio? Totally understand the advantages of optical over component/RCA, but not so much when it comes to HDMI.

Then why does the iPhone 6S record in 4K?
If you're going to go 4K, align your products to support it.
You can record in 4K on an iPhone 6S, edit a 4K movie in iMovie, but you can't watch it on a 4K TV using Apple TV. Weird.

EXACTLY! Imagine doing 4K airplay mirror to show off your shiny new 6S' 4k video clips.

I have one of my ATV's hooked up to an external DAC using the optical output which is then connected to my hi-end audio speaker. It's HDMI goes to the TV in my music listening room.
But no, HDMI has superior audio as it can carry multiple uncompressed audio streams. Toslink can only carry multiple audio streams in a compressed format.

He might not but I have two 70" 4k TVs and a 4k Sony projector and am itching to see how it can throw a 130" 4k picture. I'm guess I'm getting the Fire unless Roku announces before the Fire is available. I wish I couldn't have just bought an Apple.

I agree. I don't know why people are acting like 4K is some far off fantasy. You can buy a 70" 4k for cheaper than I bought a 50" 720P DLP years ago. My next TV will be 4K. I have been holding off on buying an Apple TV and really thought this one was going to be MAGICAL /s. I'll still probably buy one just to stream my iPhone pictures to the TV, maybe...

I just hope they're giving the Developers of Kodi a few of these.
Been told that many of the top ranked developers had multiple units sent to them on announcement day last week. This "lottery" is a wide distribution of several thousand units (perhaps tens of thousands) to most professional developers. I'm sure there is now a rush in college dorms over who got a 4th gen Apple TV and who didn't. While it is against the agreement, wonder if there is a grey market for these developer units now.

If the ATV4 did 4K why would you buy the ATV5?

Plus it's not like there are a lot of apps for the FireTV. 4k is a blip in the spec wars, just the way MP was a measurement of "progress" back in the day.

4K TV is a sillier fad than 3DTV was. At least you could see 3DTV.

And "Smart TVs", had a really hassle with the sales droid telling me everyone was buying 3D/Smart TVs and struggled with the idea I wanted one with a few HDMI ports than that was all.

I ask people at work how often they use the 3D in their TVs, turns out they don't, it was a Noddy Feature they got sold.
Same with Blueray, lots choice to buy the cheaper DVD because they can't see the difference.

Apple TV etc is going to kill the market for "smart TVs" when people realise how limited they are, and how quickly they are abandoned by the manufacturer.

Technically it is a violation of the NDA.

The Apple TV Developer Kit is provided for your own software development activities only. Prior to Apple’s commercial release of Apple TV, you agree not to publicly write about, review, or display the Apple TV Developer Kit.
Publicly displaying the Apple TV Developer kit means you can't use it for public demonstrations like in-store demos. It doesn't refer to taking pictures of it.

but no 4k support. :p

No content. Not enough bandwidth for streaming in most homes in the U.S.. Netflix streaming 4K? Public relations stunt. Just another spec that’s not ready for prime time but gives thrills to the nerd class. Apple will implement it when it makes sense to for business. Example: the new Amazon Fire box touts 4K but if you look at the specs it only supports 30fps.

4K TV is still nowhere near mainstream. No contents, and panels are generally crap for consumer level price tag.
Looking at 1080p content on 4k TV is just blurry and weird. On top of that, the network bandwidth on average is still far behind streaming for 4K contents.
My take on 4K is its where HD was ten years ago. That is a new format without much content support. The 4K format will trickle down as HDTV (1K?) did but that takes time. For those bitching Apple TV does not have 4K support, if it did have 4K support, you'd be finding something else to complain about.

Let's take votes for the "Next bitched about Apple TV issue." Here are the nominees:

1) The sides of the unit picks up fingerprints too quickly on its glossy surface.
2) The remote has a Lightning connector instead of USB-C.
3) No sepreate sound connectors.
4) There is no white color option and only comes in black.
5) The remote is too thin and does not have a "good feel"

Please tell me there is a wireless audio/headphone feature! And can I plug in standard earbuds to the remote (ala Roku) or do I have to buy bluetooth earbuds?
