To be honest I can't tell the difference between 1080P and SD. And I have 20/20 vision. Everything on TV is garbage anyway. Seeing garbage in HD doesn't make it any better.

Like others I was wondering why Apple dropped the optical port. However I have come to the realization that one could just use the optical out on my TV to my 5.1 Receiver that has an optical port in so to me that is not a problem.

Better test that. A lot of pass-through efforts from TV to 5.1 only yield stereo (not 5.1). It's seemingly uncommon to have a TV that will receive a 5.1 signal via HDMI and route a 5.1 signal out of it's optical port. Maybe you'll be a luckier one with your particular set.

I am a dev, and haven't been selected in the lottery. From what I understand, I can only get it when it's released to the public at this point.

But how much will I pay? $1 or $149? Will I be able to order one through Apple Dev Center ?
$149

5K Macs make sense because you sit close.

And 4K recording on new iPhones makes sense because Apple had endorsed 4K there, right?

And 4K editing & rendering even on iDevice iMovie makes sense because Apple has endorsed 4K there, right?

It just doesn't make sense in this ONE product from Apple because Apple did not endorse it here, right? "Silly", "Stupid", "you can't see the difference", "fad" today but Apple won't be "silly", "stupid", etc for having endorsed it in pretty much the rest of the product mix OR when they roll out a 4K :apple:TV next so that there is a way to play the 4K video we shoot on the tens of millions of 6s phones they will sell on 4K TV sets.

iPhone can shoot 4K > iMovie & FCPX can edit it & render it as 4K > iTunes can store those 4K movies in the media database >| Apple TV | 4K TV

but no 4k support. :p

I know this was in jest but I don't get the obsession with 4K. I have one and I can't find any content for it. For my office tv I ended up buying a more expensive 1080p curved oled screen and I couldn't be happier. The 4K content I have seen on oled tvs is absolutely stunning but 5 years from mainstream at best. For oled 4K at 75"+, I mean. And the 4K content recorded on my Samsung doesn't look at good as my 1080p bluray so I kind of feel like it's the comparison between phones that have 22mp cameras versus our 8mp phones. The only high mp phone that was brilliant was my Lumia.

Maybe I'm ignorant but I feel like it's pointless for most to have 4K on streaming boxes if you're trying to serve the majority. Still feel it's unnecessary on my 6s. Maybe I'm ignorant. I'm certainly rambling. :p

Saw an 8k tv at CES, was pretty amazing. Looked like the people were in front of me. With extremely high resolutions, it looks 3D.
It's the contrast that provides the depth. Samsung has one on their 4K tv that was just stunning on the demo. But after having three different Sammy displays die on me in as many years just out of warranty, I'm sticking with LG

I was listening to the latest iMore podcast today and they had an iOS developer that made some pretty alarming revelations. Apparently the graphics engine is using tech that's nearly 10 years old and is archaic compared to something like real engine. Also the 250mb app size limit is going to be a large problem for more higher quality games. Another problem from a dev point of view was the controller issue. She said she understands why, but when developing a game they most definitely take into consideration the type of controller and is a problem when doing this in hindsite.
I personally don't think this is something to replace an XBox but would love to see more than casual, time killer games.

Exactly, I don't understand what was Apple thinking when they decided to not include 4k in the new Apple TV.

Amazon Fire TV already included 4K and Apple could have included that feature also but they always want to save money and release new features in the next versions.

4K would be a great feature with the new Apple TV because the iPhone 6S let you record videos in 4K, but how does Apple think that you are going to see that 4K videos without offering 4K in the new apple tv?

Recording 4K videos in the iPhone 6S is useless if you can't view the directly on your 4K Tv don' you think so?

4K isn't just a resolution change, it also adds almost half again as many colours (especially ones close to white and black) and increases the framerate to 120fps.

Those are big changes that will be a night and day difference. Not all 4K televisions on the market support them yet, but if you've got one or if you plan to buy one in the future then your Apple TV will have noticeably "bad" picture quality compared to some other input sources at any viewing distance.

Since this thing can be used for gaming, missing out on 120fps is especially sad. Also note that current iPhones are able to record 240fps video, but Apple TV can only display 60fps – for every frame of video you see, there are three others that were thrown away.
Huh? 240fps video is meant to be slowed down for slow motion. The iPhone is only 60hz also. Do you really think we're going to see 120 fps gaming on anything other than a gaming PC? It's completely pointless.

The reason apple didn't include 4K with this apple TV is because Apple TV is not merely a content streaming device. It's basically a computer. Supporting 4K means that they need a faster A# processor, beefier graphics chip for good performance of OS UI, and all the app devs would need to worry about 4K UI assets and performance, and it's entirely possible that they can't achieve the butter smooth goals they have with current generation processors.

A spec such as native resolution affects a lot more aspects of the product than most people realize.

So 10 years from now we will still all be on 1080P? Apple will not make any more 5k iMacs?
Oh man, don't do him like that... Now he'll realize apple, just like everybody else is.. working and producing stuff higher than 1080p.. dreams are shattered, illusions are destroyed.. damn. I'm sure he'll buy a 4k tv for Christmas now.. :/

It has an A8 processor and uses the metal graphics engine, so your statement is patently absurd.
nothing special about an a8 processor. can't even drive the 6 plus screen properly, let alone 4k. metal my ass.

Sorry that you don't seem to get what I'm saying. Enjoy your 4K tv shows. Remember to use gold plated HDMI cables for best image quality!

Hope iFixit got one too. Really curious why it is taller than the previous generation...

I wonder why they are making us wait so long for this. Do they need more time to make enough to fulfill demand? Or do they want to wait until a few good apps are available at launch?

You guessed correctly. It is two reasons. They absolutely want apps available at launch. They don't even have to be great, just acceptable, and there need to be more than three of them. Think how pathetic it would look if they introduced the App Store with much fanfare, and nothing was in it. They might even get support calls from people thinking this was an error.

The other is a much smaller reason. They are still polishing the software. Fixing some bugs, making that icon match the rounded corners of the others, that sort of thing. Because they can, while they are waiting for the apps.

But, mostly it is the first one.

"Everything on TV is garbage anyway"? Really. And you can't tell the difference between 480 and 1080? I hope you aren't expecting any credibility with these statements. Very sad actually.

I can't say I agree with any of this. I would say the reason they didn't include 4K on the new TV's is because there isn't any 4K content as of yet on iTunes. I'm sure they want to be able to offer 4K content if they are going to sell a device that delivers it.

Forbes is trash.

Wow, they certainly were not trash in the past, but this is the dumbest title I've seen in quite some time.

Yeah, and the Amazon Fire Phone embarrassed them too, right? Or is it more accurate to say Apple never even noticed it was released.

And neither did anyone else.

you're trying to win an argument by making a false analogy. it's a classic. "fire tv is trash compared to apple tv because fire phone is trash compare to the iPhone". that's some logic right there! let me guess, Harvard 96?

You all still do not get it. 4K is still in its infancy! Our current infrastructure, even OTA, is no where near ready.
And BTW.... "future proofing"???? all you all serious???? There is no such thing as future proofing in technology.
If you believe that, then you've been sold a bag of lies.

Amazon is releasing a fire TV with "4K" support. Amazon currently has 4K content. So yes it makes sense for them to do that. Why? Because just like Apple their main goal is to get you to stay in their ecosystem. All the other video streaming apps are just a bonus.

Apple currently does NOT have 4K content. Why would they release a product that would push you to another ecosystem?
Think like a successful business and not like a tech fan for a sec and you will see why.
