Apple's plan is becoming clearer.

Everyone thought the Mac app store was just a way to better sell Mac apps. But it's really not. (Acorn or iLife will be fine with or without this store.)

No, this is an attempt to bring some of the iOS developers over to the Mac...someplace they would not have thought to tread before this.

Looks like it's gonna work.

Yep! Clever really, it does look like it's gonna work :)

oh GOD please no! not when you already have a mouse and keyboard in front of you!

Would present a nice different way to interact. Say like you have a game like sims I think you could use the mouse and iPad together. So then you wouldnt have to learn like some commands on the keyboard you could just tap a custom icon like to build a house andmit would get rid of some of the clutter on screen. Of course this should be optional but we shouldn't limit ourselves to just the mouse and keyboard, who knows other input methods may be better.

To me, the Mac App store is meant for all the professional mac applications that already exist, not for indie iOS developers to make the move to OS X.

Today's indie developer will be tomorrows Microsoft (I didn't want to say professional developer).

And you want to know why this is a good thing, look at the iOS apps that have since been ported to other platforms. Now if someone creates the next Lotus 1-2-3 for OS X (did I just date myself or what) and it's a hit....

Imagine having the hot apps first and having people wait for a Windows, Linux and web port.

...

the mac app store will be an awesome place for people to find apps before they download them off piratebay LOL (not that I condone that but it will happen for sure)

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (S60; SymbOS; Opera Mobi/1209; U; en-US) Presto/2.5.28 Version/10.1)

@res1233 No, but don't be mistaken to think Apple's approval process will result in bug free software. Sure, it will help but is no silver bullet.

And since Apple is going to intentionally make it easy to port apps from iOS, this should benefit the end-users too, by giving them good prices.

I'm curious, what is Apple going to do to make it easier to port apps than it was before ?

I think many of you guys are looking way too deep into this.

Apple claims their is no limit on how many computers you can install a paid App on, I'm sure you will have to authorize every computer using your Apple ID, but it will be interesting to see if I can buy Pages, Numbers and then install this on my cousin's computer (we generally go 50/50 on iWork and iLife, so I would like to continue to do the same, considering that the disk version doesn't require a serial number during installation).

Applications can quite easily check that they are running on the Macintosh on which they were downloaded. And what you are suggesting and what you and your cousin have been doing is copyright infringement.

Its already available on Steam ; been on there for a while now.

I hope 'slimmer' doesn't mean dumbed down limited 'lite' versions. As long as developers keep offering full editions, all is good - especially in the case of Rapid Weaver.

You can't expect prices to drop drastically and keep the same quality / functionality. Full time professional developers don't like working for peanuts. The OSX user base is fairly limited when comparing against windows and iOS.

This is exactly what I am scared of. I am scared the apps for the Macs are going to start being iOS type apps....dumb down simple apps. It works great on the iOS devices, but I want powerful full featured software to run on my desktop. I may not be able to get rid of Windows just yet. I guess we will know soon enough.

I think these developers are underestimating the demand for quick OSX apps. (Games especially) I predict, if its a quality app, Air Hockey will hit their goal within 60 days of launch.

What I like is the licensing. Not having to buy 3 licenses for my 3 Macs would be simply awesome!

Sounds like Jobs isn't done with the Mac afterall. Wonder if he'll throw some attention toward the Mac division again?

While unit sales have increased drammatically since the iPhone introduction, you can't deny that innovation in the Mac division has slowed (a major OS X delay, slowdown of Mac hardware revisions, lack of radical design changes, lack of new product lines, slowdown of Mac software revisions, etc).

2011 should be interesting for both the Mac and iOS.

Wow seems to be a lot of variety in developers expectations. I wonder how many units SlothCam could sell if it was a Mac app. I'm starting to think a full screen SlothCam might be cool...

Like seeing that prices will be pretty close to the same.

What I am hoping for is that iwork 11 will be there. I skipped the last version, but now my ipad created docs are no longer compatible unless I export them as word docs.

Also, I hope they allow you to buy ilife apps separately. All I need is the new imovie.

Looking forward to the day when our ipad/iphone apps run natively and data stays in sync on the mac.

If they haven't fixed the imovie problems, then no you don't want it. I hope today's update will fix it. Bloody near killed me when the video/audio sync problems came out of left field with only the detachment of the audio from the clip worked around the problem.

They could have bought the family pack which gives them up to 5 computers to install it on. Legally.

Wow... cool that iOS apps can port to easily. Could be very interesting. I didn't realize this was so easy. I big plus for Apple on that!

Yeah. A big reason that enterprise adoption of the iPad may lead to enterprise adoption of Macs. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets easier then it is now with Lion.

Only if his cousin lives with him. The family pack is for 5 computers residing in the same household.

We will be making our iCollect apps (iCollect Movies, iCollect Books, etc) for the Mac. Look for Movies on the Mac App Store on launch day.

That's about my guess too. It's, of course, incredibly difficult to nail down what sales will be like through a new distribution channel. However, I think there's great potential for developers in the Mac App Store. If sales are good, then developers will continue to bring outstanding products to the Mac App Store. (That doesn't mean there won't be piles of "not so great" apps though.)

T-36 hours (roughly) until launch!

The brilliance of this app store, is it makes it even less intimidating for novices to buy a computer. By dumbing down the Mac, they'll sell even more. There's nothing of significance to learn, and less decisions to make. No thinking required. Apple will increase their revenue by leaps & bounds.

The entire point and eventual drive of the Mac App store will be one thing: GAMES. It has been what has driven the iOS app store. It will become what drives the Mac App store. Good news is that us consumers will benefit! Now there will be a centralized place for us to get ACTUAL games for our mac! Right now the pickings are slim. In 2 years, I think that Windows users will not have a solitary lock on games.
