Both iPhone XR and 11 have the best price-feature ratio, so they were and still are understandably popular. If XR did flop, Apple would not be selling it alongside 11, which they still do.

Best move Apple has made for many years and they even improved on that with the 11.

I got a pro max but it’s for reasons that the mainstream public don’t really care about.

No flop for sure. It’s the best selling iPhone of 2019.

My carrier (like many others in Canada) is offering the XR free, on a mid tier plan on a 2 year contact. The 11 is CAD$479 on the same plan, and the 11 Pro is CAD$859. Ouch. It’s no wonder the XR is the best selling iPhone of 2019.

That is amazing. It was a brilliant strategy by Apple to lower the XR price and and continue selling it alongside 11 and 11 Pro.

At this point Apple are offering a cheap entry into the Apple ecosystem, which in the grand scheme of things is brilliant. Once people get hooked to the XRs brilliant Speed, Battery Life and Support, then they will be happier to spend a little more on more Apple products be it: AirPods, Watch, iPad, smaller accessories that they make or 3rd party ones that they take commission on, oooor the software and streaming services like Apple TV+, Apple Music, Arcade, News+ etc....

It’s an interesting situation that Apple has created, and considering the fact that the XR rocks an A12 SoC, it should be able to stick around for quite a number or years to come. I won’t be surprised if it’s still being sold in 2022 in some regions.

Some Android OEMs may begin feeling more seriously squeezed on their low margin game, as although they can put more features into a low-mid end phone, they simply don’t have the ecosystem to back their devices as well as Apple can.

Explains why the iPhone XR has been the best selling smartphone in 2019 in general.

It is not the same in Europe, and iPhone XR is a best seller nonetheless...

It’s the same in the US though. The XR is the budget iPhone, heavily discounted by carriers.

Furthermore, it’s the cheapest without discounts, and has a cheap upgrade to 128 GB. There is no cheap upgrade beyond 64 GB for the Pros, and the price of the Pro Max 256 GB is ridiculous.

Also in Europe it is the budget iPhone, with iPhone 8, but it is not given for free.

Says you. It's $100 more than I paid for my 128GB 7 Plus over 4 years ago. Never regretted that purchase for a second nor did I think it was too expensive. It did exactly what I wanted and needed — when I sold it last year, I got top $$$.

Your constant whining about price was old a long time ago. It's your opinion only and has never been fact for those for those who are willing to pay for the features we want. Perhaps it's time to find a rant less boring.

Back to the topic: I upgraded to the Xs to get a camera just as good as the 7 Plus in a smaller package — but only after the XR came out and I decided that "pinch-zoom" couldn't work for me because it requires two hands. If I had two working hands, I would have found the XR quite acceptable.

The 7/8 Plus, X, Xs & 11 series cameras can all be operated one-handed. I bought an 11 Pro last month because it works with my car a lot better than the Xs which has a flaw that I consider to be a safety hazard.

The only possible reason I can think of for upgrading again next year is if the 12 Pro (or whatever they call it) comes in a smaller size—I don't care about 5G. If so, I'll be all over that.

Wasn't the 7+ 128GB "just" $869? Iirc, there was a 7+ 256GB for $969.

The $1249 256GB 11 Pro Max is $380 more than 128GB 7+.

Yeah, the 7 Plus 128 GB was US$869 at launch. That means that at US$1249, the 11 Pro Max 256 GB is a whopping 44% higher priced at launch.

So, I have no idea WTF he is talking about, unless he is confusing carrier subsidized pricing with real pricing.

There are major caveats with those discounts in the US—they often require a switch to a more expensive unlimited plan and/or add-a-line costing $960 (24 mo) to $1200 (30 mo) or more before tax over the life of the payment plan.

I'm not whining about prices (bought a 256 Gb iPhone 11 Pro for 1300€...) but you are wrong.
The iPhone 7 Plus 128 Gb was something like 250€ less than an iPhone 11 Pro Max 64 Gb.

Yes the plans vary in price but nonetheless you can often get mid-priced plans with free XRs, esp. when they are having promotions.

The free iPhone 8 plans are typically cheaper though of course. I just ordered an iPhone 8 on a cheap plan for a relative on a pension.

In the US, the $40 per month is already cheap or at least mid-tier for postpaid on major carrier. Maybe you can get $30-35 per line with autopay discount on the lowest end. These are per line for family plans. Solo lines are more expensive. For free phones, that often requires a new account or carrier switch with number port-in. May not always be an option depending on coverage in one's location.

You'd need MVNO for cheaper plans and that would probably be BYOP.

Thanks for confirming those prices. His post was obviously wrong about the dates to begin with. Couldn’t bother looking up the actual prices given the obvious rant.

The XR ended being such a flop it’s now everywhere! Saw plenty out and about today and it’s clear it’s a very popular iPhone with the masses. Apple just need to continue with some form of sensible pricing as it’s keeping them relevant in the market.

My carrier, [which is a corporate store], sold out of XR during the holiday season. Consumers are smart enough to see the value in an older model iPhone, which performs the same core functionality as the 2019 iPhone 11. In terms of offering a smart phone experience with Apple, (aside from the iPhone 8), the XR is the clear choice.

Says you.

If you use your iPhone over Bluetooth in your Toyota, you'll find that the 11 series fixes an ongoing problem with call and alert volumes. It was annoying with older phones (too soft) but with the "fix" delivered with the XR/XS was so bad that many felt it was a safety hazard—way too loud and would not remember volume changes. Turn it down and the next time you ran your car, calls and alerts would come in again at full volume.

Neither Apple support nor AT&T could fix it and Toyota never offered a firmware update to deal with the problem, blaming it on Apple.

This is now fixed in the 11/11 Pro. Call and alert volume settings are now saved.

I have no idea if other car makes are affected.

Not an issue in my wife’s 2016 RAV4 with her XR.
