It flopped for me. Sticking with my SE until Apple comes out with a smaller phone than in current lineup. Meanwhile, Apple’s stock has dropped substantially since XR came out. So yes, it is a flop, as are the other gigantic phones.

If they want to sell me a new phone, produce one I want. Big apple user, love the ecosystem, but make a decent smaller phone, that’s all I ask.

XR didn't flop because of size, most people still prefer larger phones...

Now the bulk and weight and huge bezels are probably a factor but I think old iphones still run damn good.

Considering the front page of apple.com is now XR *AND* XS for after trade in prices of $449/$699, I’d say none of the 2018 iPhones are selling well overall

Apple might have to work harder next year and drop their prices a bit

In the last couple of weeks I’ve seen some amazingly cheap deals on the XR but also the XS is being offered cheaper on contract. I’ve not seen this before and especially so soon after launch. Great news for us though and I can’t imagine they would suddenly be doing this if the current phones were doing exceptionally well.

Could this be the year we see Apple return to a more sensible pricing structure for 2019? I hope so even if there are cheaper options with older devices.

Sucks for anyone who paid RRP this time around if true. plus the trade-in price next year is going to hurt, too.

It probably pays to keep a phone longer than a year and get your monies worth out of it. So little changes year on year recently and the incremental processor and camera upgrades don’t make up for losing several hundred on the price paid for the privilege of upgrading after only a year IMO. This is a reason I’ve dropped out of buying a current iPhone and am a year behind on my upgrades. I’m missing very little and paying a lot less.

Be nice to see the XS equivalent drop to £800 next year and the XR to £650. I think we might see a bit more interest.

I think the XS should occupy the old 6/7/8 price the max the old plus phone pricing and the Xr should be a bit cheaper than the Xs.

Technically, there is no evidence supporting the XR flopped at all. Apple’s worst enemy is not the competition, it’s their pricing that is not generally attractive to the average consumer, which could hurt them long term.

There is no evidence to say any of the phones released this year have flopped. There’s a lot of speculation and until we get some financial results you can’t say either way. Even then it will be difficult as we aren’t getting unit sales anymore.

Yes, totally agree. And if there is an issue I get the impression (from reading between the lines) that there’s a slow down in expected sales for all iPhone models currently on sale. It’s just that the iPhone XR gets the media attention because it was/is/supposed to be the most popular new iPhone.

And it might not just be Apple, rather a slowdown for all manufacturers in a saturated market. We really didn’t know.

However, I don’t think it would take much of a reduction in price in order to move things forward. Maybe the XR starting at $699 and the XS at $899. There were rumours that something like that would be the case before the phones launched.

The other thing that bugs me is the “wonky” storage options. If the XS MAX had a 128GB option (obviously at a lower price) I would have probably bought that rather than the XR. The XS is out for me as personally I find it too small. 64GB isn’t enough and 256GB is unnecessary for me so I refuse to waste the cash on something I don’t need.

Traded in my 7Plus (bought new in 6/17) for an XR/128 gb yesterday and am happy with it so far. Got a good trade-in deal ($300) for the 7 plus so the total layout was about $650, including Apple Care. If this means that the market is sinking for the XR & XS, so be it, but it certainly satisfied me, the customer.

The one factor that made me hesitate about going to the XR was the loss of the telephoto camera -- I've liked that feature on the 7 plus. I have come to appreciate the generally good quality of an iPhone camera anyway and use it a lot. Still have my DSLR but, as one of my photography teachers used to say, the best camera to use is the one you have to hand.... Nonetheless, I decided that the price differences between the XS & XR didn't justify going with the higher end model, especially since you're also forced to take the "upgrade" of 256 gb storage if 64 gb is too small.

WRT to the XR: First, with the Otterbox Commuter case (I do much better with serious protection!), the XR is no larger & maybe a bit thinner and lighter than the 7 plus. Second, it took me, an official OLD in her 60s, about 30-45 seconds to get used to face ID. The only real hitch in setting up the new phone was Google's failure to send the 2FA texts to me. I had my iPad with me as well but nothing ever came through on it either so I ended up having to finish the set up for mail at home where I could get into my gmail account via my desktop & access alternate 2FA methods.

The main benefit of Face ID is the edge-to-edge display, and that's the biggest design change to the iPhone ever. If a person doesn't notice that difference or care, I'd suggest they are the type of person who is only looking at the price. No amount of innovation will interest them.

Totally subjective. I’ve had iPhones since 2007 and would say the biggest design change ever was a Retina display and touchID was the second biggest. Now those changed how I used my phone. I don’t find an edge to edge display nearly as compelling a change, especially because it necessitates the notch.

Boy, are they getting desperate, it seems. This came in a mail few moments ago.

Maybe making iOS 12 this good was a bad idea after all?
I hate to say it, but yeah. Apple’s issue is that a phone from the last few years with a new battery and iOS 12 is just too damn good. The only thing I’m jealous of on the newer models is the better camera. Other than that, my 7 remains far too good a device to consider upgrading.

Be great if they do.

Think we all want awful sales if it means lower prices.

The reports mostly made headlines today about the XR outselling every phone. The date today is December 27, 2019. The last reply before yours was December 8, 2018. People did not have that information a year ago.
Lack of information never stops Apple bashing on Macrumors.

It was the best-selling smartphone in 2019 in the US. 26.9 million units (and probably even more now). The average consumer doesn't upgrade on launch day, they upgrade when they need a new phone. That doesn't have to be in September or October. Yes both the Xs and Xr didn't sell that well in late 2018, but in course over one year, they did. Xr is still selling well, i believe better than the 11. Just shows that the average customer doesn't care much about the differences between Xr and 11, they just wanna save 100$.

Back in November 2018, XR had already outsold the Xs and Xs Max. This was despite the fact that Apple gave the Xs and Xs Max a one month head start on sales.

Anybody with common sense could predict the XR would be successful even back in 2018. The XR was priced right around Apple’s ASP of $700 and had most of the features consumers wanted.

I’ve seen multiple reports online about Apple telling suppliers to cut back on production. Is it too early to call the iPhone XR flop for Apple?
Fast forward one year.. the iPhone XR is still being sold on Apple's website. So, I'm guessing it isn't a flop at all. This seems to reveal the dangers inherent in speculation. Well, there will always be differing opinions.. but those hold no value except to those who hold the opinion.

Don’t assume there’s lots of common sense around here .....LOL

The OP started this thread last year in November... and all of the 2018 iPhones didn‘t sell that well to be fair during that time. Now they do.

I skipped the Xr this week. The improvements in the 11 were worth the extra cost. But the Xr would still be a good phone if the other upgrades are desired for the cost.

I thought I read somewhere that Apple was no longer going to post its sales separately. Where did these XR sales numbers come from?
