Just tried upgrading my wife's 4S and it went through with no issues.

I am still getting the error "The SIM card in your iPhone does not match the SIM card associated with your account." AT&T is trying to tell me that their servers are so swamped. BULLCRAP! That may be an issue earlier but it obviously is not true right now.

Will update if I learn anything else. I am guessing we are going to have to go to an Apple Store and get the phone swapped.

I tried once in the middle of the night when I woke up, the iPhone 4S was off for about 5 hours (thinking it might need ti just set awhile) nope it still says "SIM card with iPhone does not match SIM card associated with account" so I think I am going to make a genius bar appointment and see what they say, only issue I may run into is that dont have any iPhone 4S replacements or refer me to AT&T. Bottom line it is something ATT or Apple have to fix its not a lag in the network!

yes that is exactly what is happining to me but now apparently i cant reactivate the sim that came with my phone because i already activated the new one? im hopleslly lost

Mine is saying the same thing, even after waiting all night so I know its not a network lag because people are activating their iPhones almost instantly. I am going to Apple, I ordered mine from Apple and I mean they need to fix it or replace it or refund my money so I can buy a new one but this time ill order it through AT&T i think those customers are not experiencing the SIM issue

Called AT&T back and got someone who was actually good at their job! (I know, amazing, right?) Their manager thinks my phone shipped with a bad SIM. They can't answer why I can use this damaged SIM in my iPhone 4 though. Off to the Corporate AT&T store tomorrow for some answers.

I wonder if that can be the case being that it works fine in your iPhone 4? Mine has he same exact issue, it gives me the "SIM not associated with the account and can not activate iPhone" but when I put it in my iPhone 4 it works fine, ATT says my account matches the SIM. My question is can ATT or Apple replace the SIM card and activate the phone being that if they replace the SIM how is the new SIM going to match my account lol ugghhhh

just called att and they advised me to get a new SIMi just dontsee how thats gunna work. question when does apple phone support open?

and apple toold me i need to try a new sim and if that doesnt work then they need to replace my phone. great job att.

Odd people are having issues swapping sim cards. I tried activating my 4s out of the box and had issues so I swapped the sim out of my 4 and it started right up and was restoring from my iCloud backup with a couple minutes. My wife's activation took about 45 minutes after many "wait for email" attempts.

My 4S activated fine in the apple store BUT i haven't had service for about 15 hours. On the phone with ATT Tech.

Update: resent an activation and may be up in about 1-2 hours (said the same thing last night). Yeah, we'll see about that.

activated more than 12 hours ago. My 3gs service stopped about 30 minutes later, but I still have "no service" on my 4gs. It's a huge PITA. I called AT&T, but they said just wait...??

Are you getting intermittent service as well? maybe once in a while it will see the network and then drop it? That's what is happing to me.

wohoo just activated new sim from att did the trick make sure they activate on the upgrade line first then swap sims

If anyone is having the same issue I had I got it resolved. Activated the iPhone 4s yesterday but didn't get service. It let me finish setting up the iPhone and it had the AT&T logo but couldn't make calls or use 3G data. Left it overnight thinking they were just backed up. It was still the same way this morning so I called AT&T. Apparently the system didn't completely update and was still showing the iPhone 3GS on the account. The rep verified the imei and iccd numbers and Updated them in the system and 10 seconds later the iPhone 4S was working. :)

I went to the Apple store and said ATT sent me here to get the iPhone 4S replaced due to Apple pre-orders SIM info not being transferred to ATT and apple swapped out the iPhone4S and the new one activated almost instantly!

What next? We just wait?

Hey I went to Apple and told them that because I pre-ordered it through apple.com there was a issue with the SIM card and asked to have it swapped out for a new one and they swapped it out and the new iPhone 4S activated almost instantly with my current number etc so mine is now activated but only after they swapped it out, they tried everything to get the original iPhone 4S activated but they couldnt do it so they swapped it out...

was on the phone with business customer care while they were activating because i was activating one of my other lines with it. took 4 seconds...literally...

went to a AT&T store and they swapped out the sim with a new one, worked right away. So if anyone else's phone activated fine, but is getting no service, I would go to a AT&T store to fix it.

Ok so after going to ATT and getting a new SIM card, that didn't work. So they told me to go to Apple and get a new phone. Went to Apple, they wanted to put another new SIM in to make sure, fine; again, didn't work. So they ultimately gave me a new iPhone 4S which solved the problem, apparently I had a dud.

So if you have activated BUT still have NO SERVICE showing on your bar where it should say ATT then you may also have a dud like me. I have waited about 16 hours and it would get service and drop it. So best bet if you had my problem exactly, then go to Apple and get a new Phone.

I have been having activation issues since yesterday at 9:30am.... after numerous calls and finally visiting the AT&T store yesterday afternoon, they said the problem was Apple, the AT&T rep called Apple, who said the issue was AT&T. AT&T rep said to just go to Apple (which is 100 miles round trip). Went back to AT&T store this morning and spend 3 hours at the store. The AT&T rep called an Apple rep, then another rep, then a supervisor, still no resolution. AT&T rep said Apple was looking into it and that AT&T would call me when Apple called them.... so far it's been 29.5 hours and still an iPhone4S that can't be activated. GRRRR!

I added a line to a family plan yesterday at 9:10ish a.m. central time, Activated instantly, sucks that you guys are going through this....hope it works out.

Answering the original question...no it didn't. But that was to be expected with millions of people activating their new phones at the same time :)

I am suspicious to some solutions posted here though. I tried calling AT&T, they said there was nothing they could do and that it was a server issue on both their end and Apple's end. The AT&T activation site doesn't work for iPhones. I didn't try the "taking out of the SIM card" idea, mainly because it didn't make sense to activate my phone without the piece of hardware that actually identifies my particular phone on the network. In the end, what solved my problem was just waiting a few hours and trying it again, as described here.

When I first plugged the phone into iTunes, it wouldn't activate...wouldn't even give me the option to activate. I called AT&T and they said to just keep trying...Someone in this thread suggested the activation link they sent in the shipping e-mail.

I used that link and after verifying that the IMEI number matched the new phone, it activated immediately...
