And you're sure the SIM card number that came with the new 4S is in ATT's system under your number correct? I will be trying this when my other half gets back. I will keep everyone updated.

Yes. They confirmed that the 4S SIM card number has been moved to my number.

However, when I try to activate the number that comes up is the number I used the upgrade on.

I had trouble activating at first, but then I got a message from AT&T saying that they would send me an email to activate my phone, but in the meantime they would activate it for me. Which made no sense, until I realized that what they did was unbrick the phone, but I still can't get a call through, even though I get full bars of service. At least my 3GS still works. Sigh. This isn't exactly their first time at the rodeo, why can't they get this right?

Just tried this. Still doesn't work :(

Mine has the same issue, it shipped with a SIM card already installed, it wouldn't activate through iTunes or anything so I called AT&T and they asked for the IMEI and ICCID numbers then the call dropped cause I was on my other iphone and then after that I tried and tried to activate it and then it eventually said "The SIM card in your iPhone does not match the SIM card associated with your account" So i called ATT tech support and they told me that "Its a Network Glitch" and they are busy working to get the issue fixed... I also confirmed with the Tech department that the IMEI and ICCID numbers that came with the iPhone 4S was on file and active and they confirmed that it was...

Bought my 16G 4S at the Apple Store today and I went in about 4:30 CST. I left around 5 or so. Only 7 people infront of me.. inside the store. They activated it for me in about 30 seconds and I was out.

Okay got my phone, activation was fast, but it did not deactivate my iP4 and my 4S says no service....any help?

My phone activated, but my number hasn't transferred yet. It activated about 2 hours ago, but my old phone can still make calls while me new one doesn't but still has 2 bars of reception. And I've been on hold with ATT for 45 minutes now.

Activated on the second try without any problems; synced using Tunes and am now syncing all my music. Almost done - cannot wait to use this phone!

How do you activate through iTunes?

I tried activating through the phone's wifi, and it blasted through the activation screen in less than 5 seconds which is cool, but it doesn't show that I have a phone number, nor do I have service. Plugging into iTunes doesn't show me any options to activate?

Maybe mine's activated, maybe it's not...no idea?

finally got through to activiation at 7:30pm eastern, calling at&t was no help...all worries forgotten, now having a pleasant conversation with Siri!

I am in the exact situation as you. Completely lost haha.

Just got off the phone with a senior applecare advisor to figure out my upgrade swap problems. (A few posts back: had att change numbers associated with SIMs, can't activate with either one now.) I was worried that this new activation barrier was somehow going to affect the phones whenever they need a restore of any sort, but it turns out that it's a 1-time thing. I guess it would suck for people who are selling these things off on ebay before opening the box to activate them on their own line, though.

Mine activated within 20 seconds around 4PM EST. I thought maybe I hadn't gotten to the point where most of my friends were getting hang-ups, but mine just sailed right on through and worked.

What next? We just wait?

I have no idea, I called Apple and they are saying to pretty much just wait, but what I don't get is people currently opening up their new iPhones and activating them with no problem, if the system was backed up then how are they activating theirs and we cant and have been trying all day. Ive done everything I can to try and get it activated, hard-restart, restart, took sim card out and put it back in, iTunes activation, att web sight activation, tried activating it with old sim card, letting it sit for a hour and trying again and sill getting "SIM card in your iPhone does not match the SIM card associated with your account" Its the same number I have had for years, same SIM card that i ordered the iPhone with and same SIM card that it came installed with, ATT says the SIM that came with the iPhone 4S is active and working and I can confirm that cause if I take the SIM out of the iPhone 4S and put it into my iPhone 4 I can call out and have 3G service so I dunno man i guess just wait overnight what do you think?

Yep, mine activated instantly, but then I got it at 8am Pacific time, before the big rush started.

I got it to work! I had the upgrade swap issue. What I did was take the SIM card out of the phone which number was used to upgrade and put it in the new phone. Plugged it into iTunes. It then activated using the person's info it was purchased under. After it was activated I then swapped the SIM card back to the one that came with the 4S and put the one from the purchased upgrade line back into their 4. The 4S recognized the original SIM that came with the 4S as the number associated with my line.

Just tried upgrading my wife's 4S and it went through with no issues.

I am still getting the error "The SIM card in your iPhone does not match the SIM card associated with your account." AT&T is trying to tell me that their servers are so swamped. BULLCRAP! That may be an issue earlier but it obviously is not true right now.

Will update if I learn anything else. I am guessing we are going to have to go to an Apple Store and get the phone swapped.

I had this same issue. If you go to Apple what they will do is swap out your SIM try and activate and if it doesn't active right then the AT&T rep that you either call or is at the store says all the numbers(sim, imei, serial) match in the AT&T system then they will say its a network issue. They told me to wait overnight and if it doesn't work come back tomorrow. I dealt with both and Apple Store employee and regional AT&T reps and they both said this. I don't think you'll get a phone swap unless they decide they really cannot do anything for you.

UPS coming so late was a blessing i guess. Phone came in about 45 min ago and was up and running in 20 min. No hiccups or wait to get connected to ATT. Now get explore it. Got the 64 g, weird seeing so much room after restoring from my 32g phone.

Sim card does not match

I spent 4 hours at the AT&T store with this problem. Went to apple they solved the problem in 15 minutes. They gave me a new phone activated it with a blank sim then put my sim in. Worked like a charm!! 8 hours without my phone drove me crazy.

Hope this helps someone.

Oh this is lovely, they turned off my SIM, it won't connect, and now I got blind transferred to AppleCare. You going to be freaking kidding me... Blind transfers are almost as bad as hanging up on someone.
