Old solution to Sim Card does not match worked for me

Hi,

I've been trying to do a cross upgrade for like 9 hours and got the Sim Card does not match error all this evening. I've talked to ATT and Apple to no avail. I asked Google and found an old thread about activating 3gs phones. The process described in that thread worked for me. I installed my original sim, activated with itunes, then changed out my sim and restored to my phone in itunes.

The link I found is

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2048921?start=15&tstart=0

Hope this is helpful

Adam

Lovin' it

Just got my 4s up and running... been trying since 1:30 this afternoon. Finally worked around 7:00pm. Love it so far. Thank you Steve!

I upgraded from a previous iPhone 3GS -- new iPhone 4S came today with a new SIM card.

I restored everything and my iPhone is set up, except I can't figure out how to get my service activated. It still says "number unknown" on the Settings.

Kinda stumped as to what to do next.

After activating the 4s neither of my phones had service. The old 4 and the 4s both said no service. I then swapped sims and still had the same problem. As soon as I swapped the sims back I had service on the 4s.

I have spent the past almost 12 hours trying to get my phone activated. This is getting ridiculous.

Try this, turn off your phone, remove the sim card, insert it again and turn the phone on. Connect it to iTunes and try again, if iTunes fails, try it on the phone. Worked twice so far.

Good luck!

got mine at 6:30 PM EST time, first attempt failed, then I powered the phone off and back on, then go thru on the second attempt, but for some reason everything sync'd with iCloud, but I can not get my Contacts to sync between iCloud, Mac Mini running Lion and iPhone 4S?

Still working on trying to understand what is wrong, I think it is due to a Lion update on the Mini, but I backed everything up last night to external HDD

How do I fix this?

EDIT: Nvm. I found my answer.

You have a few options, you can delete the backup from within iTunes itself. This can be done by going to Edit -> Preferences -> Devices tab -> Backups. Highlighting the backup you wish to delete and hitting the Remove/Delete button.

Unfortunately we're in the same boat as many others. We did the activation on the phone, were told that the servers were backed up and that ATT would send us an email when our phone was activated.

In the meantime, ATT "unbricked" the phone so we could use all the features. It's been 3 hours, and there's been no ATT email...

Phone arrived yesterday @ 9:45am
Did an upgrade swap (no sim changing) which took just over 30 minutes after a wait on hold of 3 minutes.
iTunes procedure took just less than 15 minutes.
Tried on a few cases I had.
Up & running in less than an hour.

All thanks to AT&T's early delivery. It was definitely worth waiting up till the site opened for orders. That process went smoothly as well. Total time including the receipt of a confirmation email was less that 35 minutes.

12 years of exemplary service from AT&T.

No luck for me unfortunately. I just got off a 2 hour phone call that included both an Apple & an AT&T Rep who both said they could do nothing for me. That I have no choice but to deactivate the old sim on the line I bought the upgrade on(instead of just activating it on my own line), which I can't do for certain reasons that aren't exactly easy to explain. All of this after being told by numerous Reps that if I left the phone alone it would work and be activated. Two stores, ten reps in total(apple and at&t), and 13 hours later and still no activated phone. The amount of patience I had today was definitely tested.

yep my phone came at 630 and it activated instantly. I was expecting a wait based on everyone complaining but it wasnt a prob.

Oh this is lovely, they turned off my SIM, it won't connect, and now I got blind transferred to AppleCare. You going to be freaking kidding me... Blind transfers are almost as bad as hanging up on someone.

Called AT&T back and got someone who was actually good at their job! (I know, amazing, right?) Their manager thinks my phone shipped with a bad SIM. They can't answer why I can use this damaged SIM in my iPhone 4 though. Off to the Corporate AT&T store tomorrow for some answers.

i ordered two phones 64gb as upgrade and 16gb as new line... i just activated the new line.. took 3 mins, did not have to call any numbers or connect to itunes, i soon as i turned it on , it already had 3g signal... and i just had to go thru some on screen instructions... and its done... i might hold off on activating the 64gb which is my phone , to maybe tommorow or sunday hoping all these problems with activations fix up, gives me a excuse to wait till my case comes in...lol

OK I feel like a lot of us are having the exact same problem here:

1. We are AT&T customers.
2. The iPhone 4s is our upgrade.
3. We all received the "activation still pending, will send email when finished" message. But meanwhile AT&T "unbricked" our iPhone 4s. Thus we can see an AT&T sign in the status bar but we cannot make phone calls.
4. Our old phone still works perfectly using AT&T's network.
5. There has been NO EMAIL so far.

Anyone?

That's the situation I'm in with 2 iPhone 4S's. I'm hoping that when I wake up in the morning, the service will be switched over.

Received mine around 6pm. Went through the activation process very smoothly, just took a couple of minutes. No hangups here :D

4 to 4S Swap issue RESOLVED!!!

Had the "wife swap" issue where her (my old) iPhone 4 got the new SIM card and activated right away. HOURS later trying to activate my 4S with my old card, finally got thru and was rewarded with the "SIM card not associated" error.

Mind you, I had AT&T walk me thru the swap from step 1. The mistake it turns out, unknown to the the 1st ATT rep, is that YOU MUST COMPLETE THE NEW PHONE ACTIVATION WITH THE SIM CARD THAT CAME WITH IT. I put the new SIM card back in the new phone. Activation worked in like 15 seconds after a great tech (David @ Apple) suggested I try that.

Once the phone has been activated, THEN you can swap SIM cards. Phone numbers travel with the SIM cards.
Hope that helps someone who's in the same boat.

(New phone ROCKS BTW)

yes that is exactly what is happining to me but now apparently i cant reactivate the sim that came with my phone because i already activated the new one? im hopleslly lost

I have the 3G and a normal phone. 3G line was not eligible for upgrade but the normal phone line was. So I got the 4G using the normal line's eligibility. can someone recommend the best way to do an upgrade swap? I haven't done the activation through the phone or through itunes yet? Should i go to a store and do it?

when I went from original iPhone to 3GS I was hung up for a few hours waiting on activation. I activated my 4S at lunch today, took around 5-7 minutes to get up and running.

edit: the only weird thing was the order number on my confirmation email was different then the order number on my packing slip. i had to use the order number on my packing slip to get the at&t activation website to take it.

All the phones booked with AT&T.com have no issue activating. It's the apple.com booked phones having sim card match error.

My phone activated immediately, but the same time it said my iPhone is now unlocked, so I'm not sure if I got the unlocked message because AT&T is having activation issues or my phone is really unlocked.
