This might well be true and, if so, Apple might be worried that many people due to upgrade might jump on this more compact cheaper model if it comes out first, thus sabotaging their sales of bigger = more expensive models. So Apple might want to roll more expensive models first and then follow up with the cheaper ones, getting another comfortable cash stream. Smart for business, but can be quite disappointing for people waiting on for a smaller device.

It won’t matter..Apple has been positioning itself to services.. people who like 6” and bigger iPhones will continue to buy them.. for most 5.4-5.7” screen is the sweet spot..it also makes since in a world of tablets,TV,computer, smart displays and watches.

I want to say that I understand releasing 2 different models in the same size at the same time, but I don’t Lol.

It would look strange to see: “iPhone 12! Available now in 6.1”. 5.4” coming later.”

“iPhone 12 Pro! Available now in 6.1”. 6.7” coming later.”

Idk. I just don’t see it being released this way. Unless they want to see how many people prefer the middle of the road sizes.

I always go for the Max so this will be somewhat teasing but it also gives me a little bit more time to save money haha

i would suspect them to release the iPhone 12 first and the Pro later otherwise it just looks messy and confusing

it’s not necessarily for lack of desire. Can they fit three cameras in a 5.4” chassis? What about LIDAR? My guess is no.
My totally ignorant guess is that the main limiting factor is the battery size. Personally I'd be happy with a smaller battery, or a thicker phone with no camera bumps. Mind you, if the only difference with the high end models is the camera then I'm happy with the cheap models these days. It's things like screen quality, lack of bezel (or chin+forehead), speed, capacity that I care about. If we get all those in the small model then I'm happy.

These phones look and sound boring.
I'm sure they'll sell well, but colour me unenthused overall. Even the watch seems to be very iterative this year. Macs on the other hand, well, those have got me really interested with the move to Silicon.

Yeah man, it'll be great to move on from vacuum tubes Macs!

Yep. I was going to say the same thing.
6.1" models are trash.
People either want the 5.4" or the 6.7", so putting out the less desirable models first will scoop up the pent up demand for new phones (even if those people would ultimately have preferred the 5.4" or the 6.7")

It’s bothersome to me that Apple is dropping the 5.8” size in the Pro Series. The smallest iPhone Pro is now 6.1” which is just too large and bulky for my hands, conversely the 5.4” seems a bit small, and you loose the fantastic camera that’s only available in the pro line. I might end up sitting this one out and just keeping my current iPhone 11 Pro 5.8”.

Hopefully the stores will be more widely reopened by October. New to Apple folks will need them.

Right now the way the US economy is the 5.4 is Apple's best bet. Hopefully if the US economy has a big turn around the higher level models will start to sell. You don't worry about selling Mac Pro towers you concentrate on MacBook and iMac units.

For the two lens models, has anyone reported whether they will again be moderate wide and super wide? I am so hoping for wide and tele options.

Apple is set to debut four new OLED iPhones in 5.4, 6.1, and 6.7-inch sizes before the year is out. Rumors suggest the 6.7-inch iPhone and one 6.1-inch model will be higher-end devices with triple-lens cameras, while the 5.4-inch device and the other 6.1-inch model will be more affordable lower-end iPhones with dual-lens cameras.

Owing to development and production delays, Apple is rumored to be staggering its iPhone launches this year, although we're still seeing conflicting rumors about the order in which the devices will be released.

DigiTimes has previously suggested the two 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models could come out first in October, with the 6.7 and 5.4-inch models to follow, and in a new report out today, the Taiwanese industry publication has reiterated that claim, based on the shipment timing of substrate-like printed circuit boards for the devices.
Bloomberg has also reported that Apple will stagger its iPhone launches in 2020. However, it expects Apple to launch the more affordable 5.4 and 6.1-inch devices first, with the more expensive 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch "Pro" devices to follow.

Meanwhile, leaker Jon Prosser claims the iPhone 12 models will be introduced at an event set to take place during the week of October 12, with the lower-cost iPhone 12 models expected to be available for pre-order shortly after the event. Prosser says the iPhone 12 Pro models won't be available until November.

Regardless of the order in which Apple releases its iPhone 12 lineup, an official announcement about the devices could be just around the corner. Prosser believes an iPad and Apple Watch press release is due as soon as this Tuesday, but well-connected Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman thinks it's likely to be an announcement of a virtual iPhone/Apple Watch event in September.
