No, I grant you that you little phone people are very focal but that doesn't translate into real-life figures.
I'd say that the vast majority of 'little phone people' aren't present on tech forums such as this, and hence we have no idea about just how many of them are out there. I'd guess that there's a massive amounts of people, especially older people, who want a more compact phone.

It’s not just that it’s smallest, it’s that it’s cheapest. The 6.1” would probably outsell it at the same price, but they won’t be the same price.

Yep. I was going to say the same thing.
6.1" models are trash.
People either want the 5.4" or the 6.7", so putting out the less desirable models first will scoop up the pent up demand for new phones (even if those people would ultimately have preferred the 5.4" or the 6.7")
But going by the sales of XR and 11 which was both extremely popular, it kinda makes sense for Apple to release both 6.1” models first? Idk 🤷‍♂️

It’s bothersome to me that Apple is dropping the 5.8” size in the Pro Series. The smallest iPhone Pro is now 6.1” which is just too large and bulky for my hands, conversely the 5.4” seems a bit small, and you loose the fantastic camera that’s only available in the pro line. I might end up sitting this one out and just keeping my current iPhone 11 Pro 5.8”.
I agree, I really wish the 5.8” was sticking around, or at least have the “Pro” features on the 5.4”.

What alternative did people have for the newest phone last year and the year before? A $999 phone.

So it was either pay the grand, or pay $699/$750 for the 11/XR that was the perfect buy "for most people" (according to reviewers).

Sorry. People only got the 11 and XR because that was the only option other than the XS/Pro.

Wanna bet how many less 11's would have sold if you put the $399 Iphone se2020 up against the 11 last September?

The 5.4" should have been the true SE 2. I feel like they rushed out the SE2 2020 because they needed to get something in the pipeline. A smallish phone with the SE frame and no chin is going to be their biggest seller yet
The SE is about offering an inexpensive up-to-date phone. It was that way with the original SE and also the latest model. This 5.4" model will be way more expensive than the SE.

I think you're proving my point there. Consumers are price sensitive to perceived value, and you think the 5.8" should stick around.

But consumers were forced into getting the 11/XR because they had no other choice other than spend $999 on a 5.8" Pro device.

Now consumers will be able to choose a 5.4" device over a 6.1" device (that's $100 more).

Consumers are going to eat that 5.4" up, and it wouldn't be surprising if the 6.1" was released first to collect the pent up demand for a new iphone.... Because Apple isn't stupid and knows that the "most people" are going to just buy whatever comes out first and has a 12 on it.

Gosh, those are hideous. You'd think by now they would've found a way to hide the camera lenses a bit better.

I genuinely believe consumers don’t care what the camera orientation/design looks like, being we never really pay attention to the back of our iPhones. As long as Apple can somehow justify their price tag by including camera technology that makes it worthwhile, that probably overrides the overall aesthetic look. However, they use the camera as their main leverage point every year for marketing.

No surprise as the popular and cheaper models go first to cash as much as possible. Non starter $1400 mobile with 10% share can take its time for the launch. Apple realises that people won’t line up for the most expensive models. For me having used 6.5 inch screens I can’t go back 6.1 or 5.4.

Upgrading from iPhone X here and I don't want an oversized phone. Why the hell did they dump the 5.8 inch? It's comfortable to use in one hand.

I don’t know why people believe there will be 4 iPhone models when all evidence points towards 3 models:
“5.4 iPhone mini with 2 lenses
“6.1 iPhone with 3 lenses
“6.7 iPhone Pro with LIDAR & mmWave
Hmm this would make sense.
iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Plus. iPhone 12 Pro coming later.

Very few people will buy the 5.4” model. A small niche of techies with small hands will.

Price conscious people will just buy the iPhone 11 or XR for less and get a bigger screen. Super price conscious individuals will buy the SE. A lot of people who want a newer model with 5G will spend $100 more and get the 6.1” standard model.

Very curious to see who's right 😂

What you’re going to see is the iPhone 11 sell like crazy...people don’t care about 5G right now and if that phone is $100-$150 less than some 5.4” phone? Good luck selling that, particularly if somebody wants a 12 model and can get a 6.1” model for $100 more.

Same here, except coming from a X.

If the 5.4 is only missing a 0.5x lens and LIDAR, I could live without those. But if it’s missing mmWave, a 2x or 3x lens, and/or the Pros end up having 120 Hz displays, I may deal with the 6.1 Pro, even though that’s bigger than I’d want.

I have a similar quandary. Currently on a Xs and it was the so called "telephoto" second lens/sensor that convinced to move on past my 2016 SE. I had a 6 before the SE, so I'm all about the one handedness. Ultra wide angle doesn't excite me. So I'm going to indulge my techno-lust and buy a compact Canon (G7x or G5x) and try to have that on me at all times (best camera in the world being the one you've got). It'll be like pre-smart phone days, but I'll be able to wirelessly transfer photos to the iPhone and edit the RAW files... so better than pre-smart phone days. Huzzah progress!

It‘s not the Apple way...mop up the early insatiable desire for the latest iPhone with the expensive models
You are wrong...

Pro models have a lower sales rate than the affordable model; and which model is sold more is introduced first.

Watch the Apple event taken place in 2019 Sept.

well time will tell whether I am wrong. Since you don’t know what is happening in the future, you can’t say I am wrong, but you can disagree with me.

Anyhow, it is because Pro models on the whole sell less, they sell best when there isn’t a lower cost phone to compete with it, so as I said time will tell who is right or wrong, but I still say they will sell the more expensive phone first if they can’t launch all at the start.

More like weeks. On the last earnings conference call in July, Apple’s CFO Luca Maestri indicated a delay of “a few weeks”.

That may have changed, and Apple wouldn’t provide any updates until the next call in late October. But presumably by late July they would have excellent visibility to the potential launch date.
Whoopee.

Unless the 5.4" is $650 with a better chip, 5g, better camera, better OLED screen (all things people will care about).
Then a $599 11 ($699-$100) doesn't seem like a good deal.

I think smaller phones are underestimated to be something many, many people want.

we'll see hopefully 😄 (too bad apple doesn't release unit numbers anymore.... so we'll have to rely on supply chain rumors)
