Since the iPad has 256MB memory I'd be amazed if the next iPhone had any more -- clearly that's what Apple currently believe is the sweet spot in terms of price/performance. They don't like putting costly parts in their products unless it is absolutely necessary.

As if you know what is and isn't necessary!

Good to hear that iBooks is getting some attention--Apple needs to keep working on it. I know it's in its infancy still, but I wasn't impressed with what iBooks had to offer. I hope that changes sooner rather than later.

This is the first iPhone I'm actually considering purchasing after seeing the leaks...
Let's see how it will REALLY be!

I would have thought introducing haptic feedback was a sure in... ah well, maybe for the 4G'S'

What good is haptic feedback? You already know when you've hit a button when you get feedback from the screen or hear a sound.

What you really need is a screen that changes shape so you can feel the difference between keys. But we won't have that in years.

It loses all credibility stating 512 MB or RAM. If iPad didn't get so much, iPhone won't get it either.

Now why on earth didn't they put 512MB RAM in the iPad to begin with??? And yes...that's a rhetorical question as I realize it'll be yet another one of the upgrades in iPad 2.0.

Have you, during your use of an iPad encountered a situation where you wish the iPad had more RAM? In fact, have you even used an iPad? What benefit do you think throwing RAM at the iPad will have? There's more to life than specs

Any chance that the iPad actually has 512 MB of RAM waiting to be unlocked when Apple releases the 512MB iPhone?

No. The A4 chip has been x-rayed and we know how much RAM is physically inside.

... maybe the A4 chip has onboard ram, i don't know much about microprocessors but i'm sure its a possibility.

The A4 is a SoC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System-on-a-chip so therefore all the RAM is already 'onboard'. The 256MB of RAM in an iPad is inside the A4 chip

Nope.

Sorry, I don't buy it. Aside from Digitimes not having a good record on Apple rumors, there's no way the iPhone will have a higher spec than the iPad.

Assume the new iPhone will be the A4 with 256 MB Ram but with an HD display and front camera.

I think it would have been great if Apple made the screen longer and gave it a 1280x800 resolution so they could say its High Definition.

Hopefully AT&T will have a great upgrade policy since I have the iPhone 3GS.

I wonder if all the posters that claim Android's multiple resolution is a big problem for the platform will change their tune once Apple ships a high res display for iPhone.

By incorporating FFS technology, which enables a wider viewing angle and clearer visual quality under in sunlight, Apple is aiming to improve the handset's e-book reader features and promote its iBooks Store.

Wider viewing angles is great, but it doesn't "improve the handset's e-book reader features and promote its iBooks Store."

Anyway, it's good to get some more rumors along these lines.

So if the: CPU, GPU, RAM, GPS, Flash storage and loosely speaking, the resolution are the same in the iPad and the new iPhone, then:

The new iPhone is a little iPad :)

It's a bit different with the iPhone. If the rumour is true, the new display has exactly double the resolution of the old display. An exact doubling of the display is fairly trivial for Apple or the developer to deal with. Android phones have mixtures of aspect ratios and odd screen sizes - quite a bit different

all of the these leaks and teaser are working on me ( intentional or not )

- I'm ready to purchase
Here's happening the same thing. Apple will be happy with my money, and I will be happy with the 4G if these rumors are true.

And it might be true that the iPhone has 512 mb. Sure as far as we know with 'evidence' it's 256 MB but the newer, recent iPhone prototype (you know, that one from Powell) hasn't been dissected. It's very good possible Apple decided to go for 512 mb when they were testing earlier prototypes (there seem to be a lot of new features in the new iPhone, and I think it would be smart for Apple to put 512 mb of ram in it). Though I don't get my hope up for 512 mb of ram. I only have my hope up for the features we have seen in the prototypes.

I do believe it gets an IPS-display since the iPad has it too.

Think before you pull the rolley eyes out: 2X resolution on a screen with (virtually) the same physical dimentions allows for smooth and consistent compatibility.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

So how many displays are developers going to have to account for? And what about pricing? Something like:
$.99 for iPhone
$2.99 for iPhone 4G
$4.99 for iPad

I hope not.....

It's amazing how there's always some fool ready to complain about just about everything.

A even doubling of screen resolution will be easy to accommodate given the OOP design of Objective-C.

Validation of pricing structures is ultimately up to the feature sets of the respective devices, the installed bases of each, actual sales in each category, and developer's monitoring of such. Simple.

If the memory being 512 is true, that's great news for the new iPhone. Bad news for current iPad owners.

I cannot wait! Really hoping for an international launch on June 7th - PLEASE not another staggered international release with delays after delays for non-US customers...

Fabian

I don't see why the release would be staggered. We got the 3G and the 3GS in the UK virtually simultaneously with the US. It's only when the product category is completely new, as with the original iPhone and the iPad, that we have to wait.

The reason being, I think, is that the demand is always higher with a completely new product category because no-one has one yet. Whereas, not everyone who had an iPhone upgraded to a 3G and not everyone who has a 3GS will be wanting a 4th gen iPhone.

I don't see any need/sense for 960x640 res. As well as 512MB ram.
It's just a phone. iPad is almost 10inches wide and has 1024x768.

How about underclocked A4 CPU (max 800MHz), better display, video conferencing capability (2 cameras, one 5Mpixel), longer aka "Apple's breakthrough tech." ;) battery life, and iPhone OS 4.0. That's it.

As others have said, it's a trivial matter to programmatically accommodate an exact doubling of screen resolution. The other point is that Apple will most likely be transitioning fully to the new resolution while gradually dropping older models.

In case you hadn't noticed, Apple isn't waiting for your permission or blessing.

The BIG question for me that no one seems to have an rumors about is whether there will be a 64GB version. That's the most important thing to me about this phone and the only thing that wil make me buy it. If this phone has 512 MB RAM, that makes 64GB storage less likely because of the price points Apple probably wants to maintain, especially given the high price of 64GB NAND modules currently. That combined with the 16GB prototype that was found make a 64GB model seem very unlikely.

The only thing that might make it possible is that Apple has doubled capacity with every new model of iPhone so far, and if they don't do that again, they might think that the perception is that they didn't progress with this model enough.
