DigiTimes: MacBooks With Mini-LED Displays May Be Delayed Until 2022

Perfectly fine for a phone, or a TV. Think about how you use your Mac - I have windows on my screen that literally never move, for 8 hours a day during work. That window will be burnt in within a few weeks...Mini/Micro LED displays don't suffer from easy burn-in.
Oh yea the Magic Macs with the windows that don't move.

Meanwhile PCs have perfectly well functioning screens. Guess their Windows keep on moving randomly or they are all to be thrown away 'after a few weeks'

No thanks! I would say spending another $3000 on a 16" MacBook Pro with Intel is NOTHING. Such a beautiful machine I use everyday (16') that blows fans like crazy when I'm doing FCPX projects.
Yea, who wants a system where you can use a EGPU box with a 3080 card or a high end AMD video card, can have 64gb of ram, 8TB of storage, 4 thunderbolt 3 ports, run bootcamp with windows 10 and run ton of window software packages if I want to. Fan are used in all kinds of things even automobiles, put on background music, headphones.

I know people are waiting for the high end MacBooks with new screen technology and such, but a few things...

1) These machines will be expensive. A 14” MacBook Pro, presumably with a more powerful chip, new screen, starting at 16GB, will probably start at $1,699,
You're making up prices. No proof of this.
maybe more. 16” may start at $2,000 or more
It started at the price in the first place.
2) Aren’t both the M1 Macbook Air and M1 MacBook Pro in their current form more powerful than the MacBook Pro 16” is now?
So? What's your point? Did you think Apple was going to just slap the same M1 in their workstation laptop? Uh no.
3) If Apple can’t get the new models done this year they should just go with the M1 chip now for their 16 inch model,
That won't fly with people waiting for the new 16" especially since it's considered a workstation machine for power users.
or introduce a new 16” model (in the current form factor) with the M2 chip concurrent with the iPhone release
You're assuming the forthcoming more powerful chip is ready to ship with new computers. It could be also part of the delay. Do you have any inside info from Apple that the rest of us don't have?

From the article it seems that the mini LED display is the source of the problem. If so, Apple can still release redesigned MBPs with the M2 chip, but hold off on the new display technology until next year.

It’s unlikely to be a drop in replacement. Current MacBooks have a large bottom bezel because of the display driver. Mini LED designs move that to the back of the display using COF. Basically, it wouldn’t be a 14” or 16” display but something smaller.

"In early March, Japanese publication Nikkei Asia reported that Apple had delayed mass production of two new MacBook models from May or June until the second half of the year, which might be a factor behind the potential launch delay."

The delay of new MacBooks might be a factor behind the delay of new MacBooks? I can... almost... see the connection.

First, DigiTimes is wrong as much as right, and clearly publishes vague articles for click bait. Secondly, not too long ago, Apples iPad mini-lead panel supplier report significant improvements to its manufacturing process and resultant panel yeilds. I call BS. MPB-M? introduced at ADC in June and delivered early July. That's my guess.

I don't mind too much, as I am already happy with my M1 MacBook Air. If anything, I'm waiting more to hear Apple's future desktop plans and the "M2" chip they'll implement, since I plan to replace my 2012 quad-core i7 Mac Mini with something like that, preferably a higher-end Mac Mini using said chip.

Disappointing, but I can live without it as long as I can get a 16" that doesn't set my lap on fire or sound like I'm running a ceiling fan on full speed. M2/M1X please!

I wonder if this means we'll get the redesigned MBPs this year, with Mini-LED being added next year? If not, that 16" Intel one is going to look very sad having not been updated in a very long time...

I still think a new 16" M-based laptop will be a compelling purchase for many, regardless of what screen technology is in it.

The current Intel 16" seems to get a lot of stick, but I absolutely love mine. The screen is big enough for all day use without having to hook up to an external monitor, yet still portable enough for mobile use. After over a year of daily use, battery life is still great. And as I only use it for general office and graphics work, it stays cool as a cucumber. I've heard the fans about twice in 15 months.

You know i never play the waiting game I've just bought a 13" Macbook Pro M1 and couldn't be happier with it, as it still do what i need it to when the new one's come out either this year or next now.

Apple realises its baseline M1 chip runs rings around its direct competitors so decides to push back release schedules to milk it for another 6 months?

Glad I pulled the trigger on the MacBook Air. I suspect buying an Apple computer with the power of the M1, 16GB of RAM for just $1079 (student discount) is as good of deal as I’ll ever get for what it is.

I think only the 16-inch will get mini LED display this year
Just like what Apple did to iPad Pro, only the large ones get the best stuff.
This is very likely. Only the 16" gets the mini-LED for now due to yield rates and ongoing supply issues.

Tim keeps saying “there are new and exciting things coming for the Mac”. Yet all Apple releases are tweaked iPhones. I guess that cash cow is still producing. RIP Mac.
Did you miss the M1 release last year?? A total game changer. Don’t let the identical design fool you.

It makes sense that the iPad Pro 12.9 inch will be the only portable device to have the XDR Display as there is a shortage of this tech currently.

Didn’t we just have a report like last week saying the mini LED manufacturing was drastically improved…? I see a few outcomes here:

1. This rumor is false. End of story.

2. Maybe this rumor is true but is in reference to a Mini LED MacBook (as in the replacement for the current MacBook Air) and has no effect on the MacBook Pro lineup rumored for the summer.

3. Maybe this rumor is true and the 14” and 16” MacBook Pro with Mini LED is delayed. In this case we could either: (A) not get new MacBook Pros until next year which means the 16” will reach 2 years old without an update… which is unlikely (B) We do get new MacBook Pros but no mini LED or (C) In similar fashion to the iPad Pro, only the 16” gets mini LED.

My gut feeling tells me either this rumor is not true or it’s for the new 13” MacBook Air.

I really hope we don't see a delay into 2022. My 2012 Macbook pro is on its last legs. Have been patiently waiting for the Apple silicon 16" Macbook pro; would buy today if available.

I suspect regular retina versions will still come out in the new form factors. Still, makes me nervous for Dub dub (I want new laptops and a new external display. And the bigger iMacs please).

I am sure an unannounced product can be delayed. I hear this on camera forums about the 'delayed' Nikon Z9 that was announced in a development announcement, it isn't delayed as no date was given. The MacBook Pro's aren't even development announced, so far they are on paper dreams written up by people on forums about what they hope they will be.
